After the Battles of Lexington and Concord

  • April 19, 1775: About 700 British Army regulars, under Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith, were given secret orders to capture and destroy military supplies that were reportedly stored by the Massachusetts militia at Concord. Through effective intelligence gathering, Patriot colonials had received word weeks before the expedition that their supplies might be at risk, and had moved most of them to other locations. They also received details about British plans on the night before the battle, and were able to rapidly notify the area militias of the military movement. The first shots were fired at Lexington.

    The smoothbore musket was a horrific beast. Not accurate beyond 50 or 60 yards but at 70 caliber that soft lead ball did horrific damage.

    Also, there was a relief force of at least one thousand Redcoats, led by British General Hugh, Earl Percy. These 1700 men in total, however, were set upon by the better part of four thousand militia mean and minute companies by the end of the day. The colonists were very lucky that day; they were better prepared than the British, and more willing to fight. They had no idea, however, that the war started here would go on until 1783, and be fought all over the world.

  • @agatematt

    Both sides were armed with smoothbore muskets -- mostly the so-called "Brown Bess," the standard weapon of the British Army. (Americans would use it as well as French & Spanish made muskets). Effective maximum range was at best 60 yards & both sides tended to shoot high with few dead-shots among them so the low casualty count for both sides is understandable. First unit armed with rifles -- effective range 300 yards -- was Daniel Morgan's Virginians which arrived at Boston in the early summer..

Which is why I also find it funny a liberal would like the Appeal to Heaven flag more since the statement the flag is making is an appeal to God because of unjust violations by government to man's natural god given rights. Liberals don't believe in God and get offended at the slightest mention of Christianity.

It was abad enough day, but i doubt there were piles of British dead as in this scene. The colonists lost about fifty dead, 45 wounded/missing. If there were large groups of casulaties, it would have been in Menotomy and West Cambridge, in and around houses, on the Bay Road in more thickly settled areas.

      @jed4426 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yes they did. The colonial militia was constantly gaining strength as the day went on. Every town came out eventually it just took time to walk there. By the end of the day the British were out numbered 4-1. The bulk of the British, which still would have left them out numbered, was still at Castle William in the harbor. The force used was only the Royal Marines and Light Infantry. That's why Major Pitcairn was there. His Marines actually made up the bulk.

    • @95thFoot
      @95thFoot 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The British sent almost half their troops out by the end of the day. They had about 4,000 in Boston in April 1775. 700 as part of the expedition under Smith, and over a thousand as part of the relief force under Percy. The initial force was made up of the the light infantry and grenadier companies of the 4th, 5th, 10th, 18th (grenadier only), 23rd, 38th, 43rd and 52nd regiments, plus those of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of Marines. The Marines were a larger part of the relief force, but they were considered second-rate troops at best. They would also not be "Royal" Marines until 1802. Pitcairn was picked as adjutant to Smith because he was on the duty roster for that day.
