    2 years later and this still the best tutorial on roads with splines lol

    -2 takes off the ends of the spline points so the road can curve and be "bendy" without the hard edge of the beginning and end of the mesh! Absolutely brilliant, and I've searching for how to do this for a while now.
    Thank you Matt, you truly are the man!

      I think this is not actually taking the end and start points. is just making sure you iterate correctly.
      Since to iterate all points you need to go NumPoints-1 (since it's 0 based). and then because he will always try to access index+1. you need to subtract another one. making in -2.

    This is very a very quick system and it works like a charm. Thank you. Now i need to find a way to fix the UVs to avoid texture stretching when adding new segments.

    I loved the tutorial but I have a serious question. Am I the only person who thinks you should have access to a less complex process just to bend a shape? I only ask this because I feel like more people need to acknowledge how cluttered and overcomplicated some of the most seemingly simple tasks are, for the sake of making sure we utilize every nook and cranny of the software. I just feel like it's a weird flex on their behalf, I guess. Like, I get the importance of having the option to control every little thing but they couldn't just throw a simple archviz guy a slider bar or a value field when you click a model? lol (Sorry for the rant.)

    Awesome video as always,
    If you want to make a road I would use the landscape spline.

    Hi Matt, Really new at this, but I managed to work through it, just shows what a great teacher you are and the superior quality of your videos, but i have a really simple/stupid question and that is, is the static mesh you use just a plane or a box, and if it's a box does it have a lot of segments to make it super flexible to take into account the bends in the road, could you possibly make it available so I can check it out, a lot of people are probably laughing at this request, but it's all new to me. Thank you

    • @MattAspland
      @MattAspland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Richard, thanks so much for your support!
      The road I used was a simple cube in Blender scaled to the size I want. I then subdivided it a few times, I believe I had 25 different faces on each side of my road (top and bottom anyway).
      This then allows the Spline in Unreal to manipulate the mesh and rotate like in the video. The more subdivisions the better and smoother the effect, but the more demanding it is as the engine needs to load all the faces (polys).
      Hope this helps! :)

    I haven't had a chance to try this out myself yet, but shouldn't the for loop start at index 1? Assuming that index 0 is the start we are trying to avoid.

    If you subtract two for the first and last points, shouldn't you start the for loop from 1? Now it feels like you're removing the last two points.

    New Subscriber: Hello, is it possible to create a disc shape and have the mesh fill in the interior of the disc? When we make the spline larger, the interior of the disc will always be filled? Like spawn objects toward the center of disc, so to always fill the center of the disc with geometry if the spline points are moved?

    where is "road segment"?

  • @dalerose4958
    @dalerose4958 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My mesh refuses to conform to the spline. I'm using a small segment of cylinder for the mesh. Instead of making any curves, it insists on keeping the line straight, so instead of curves I just get sharp angles when I move a spline point. I've gone back through your video several times now and I cannot see where I'm going wrong. Any suggestions?

      Do you have enough edgeloops through your mesh? You can't manipulate geometry that doesn't exist.

    • @liakim1572
      @liakim1572 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to have a mesh with enough topology to "bend", you can't expect for example a cube to round and create a smooth road corner. To do so just add subdivisions to the mesh road you are using.

  • @MartKart8

    I tried to make a spline platform once, with holes in the mesh, the mesh had holes. The annoying thing was the speed of the mesh as no matter how slow the mesh moved I couldn't walk properly on it. I was trying to see if I could do a similar thing from Super Mario Galaxy, a level called Rocky Road, you would have to see the level to understand, I really liked the sweets theme of that level.
