Hey! I'm Indian-American and I've been a longtime viewer of OTV, so when you guys started talking about Indian inclusivity in North American media, I can't even begin to describe how good it felt to be recognized. I obviously only speak from my own experiences, but I'm totally fine (even proud) to be considered Asian, as I share very similar "alienated" experiences with other Asian Americans. There are definitely differences in treatment though- the Western image of India continues to be one of poverty, and that's even if they remember India exists. More often than not, "Indian" only registers to them as Native American, a mistake that Christopher Columbus made 500 years ago but still perpetuates. Many turn up their noses when I eat my lunch without utensils, there's limited restaurant options since I'm vegetarian, and I keep religious activity on the down low. Most Indian Americans don't anglicize their names either, so we deal with the eye rolls and butchered vowels of our names. And of course, these things were always played up to the extreme in the few Indian side characters there are in media, like Raj from Big Bang Theory and Ravi Ross in Jessie. Even movies like Slumdog Millionaire were directed by white people and felt a lot like just more "poverty p*rn." We're getting better with people like Aziz Ansari, Kumail Nanjiani, Anupam Tripathi (Squid Game dude) and Hasan Minhaj getting exposure, and movies/shows like "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Master of None," but there's definitely room to grow. Thank you guys for starting this conversation!

So glad toast brought up representation of people from India at 40:18. The thing is the Indian audience would actually be over the moon if they got to see their themselves and their movies break into the mainstream. That is why American/European reaction channels reacting to Indian content is growing exponentially. There is no a scarcity of good content and movies. I've always referred to myself as Asian, because I am. Indian representation in media makes me so excited!! Especially when it's done, there used to be a lot of fake over exaggerated accents in television etc. which sucked. I'm Muslim too, so even just seeing a hijabi (headscarf wearing Muslim) in the background of a scene for half a millisecond makes me so excited. I especially loved the TV show "Never Have I Ever", never have I ever seen representation that is actually realistic (in /most/ aspects). I honestly can't think of any other shows with an Indian main character.
Filipino here, tbh I think that is because among asians, Indians do have a lot of unique traits compared to other asians. It's funny because your case is exactly the opposite of us Filipinos that we lack a unique trait and most of us have different looks. i agree a lot with what toast is saying about including brown asians in the conversation more. i think it's really weird (and this is coming from someone who is half korean and half polynesian and is living in korea) how i see a lot of western countries lump pacific islanders in with asians but leave south and west asians out. pacific islanders don't identify with being asian at all, we're pacific islanders. it's just something i've noticed and i would be really interested to see how other asians and pacific islanders feel (and i mean INDIGENOUS pacific islanders, not just non-pasifika people from australia, new zealand, or hawaii).
Indian's a lot of times consider themselves Asian. But you guys are right that it feels like sometimes it's it's own thing. But I think it's that when people talk about 'Asian' the immediate thought is east Asians. Right now though I think there's a movement with more Asian representation from the south and west like Indians, Malaysians, and Indonesians.
I'm Irish. In Ireland and in the UK, Asian generally refers to South Asians from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Because we all used to be part of the British Empire there has been a lot of migration from South Asia to here. We do have East Asian, South-East Asian and West Asian communities, but they are a lot smaller and generally a lot more recent.
That underrepresentation part is something i've always thought about, being a middle easterner myself. We aren't asian but we're in asia, the government considers us white even tho we're brown. Media portrayal of us is usually just "war/peace in the middle east again."
@@k-rodkev-dog7449 well im a Chaldean from Iraq, and usually when people talk about asians they usually refer to east asians, and like the other guy said, when there's asian on a government form, theyre usually talking about east asians. So while technically i am from asia, im not the kind of asian that people think of when they say asian. Just wish there was "brown" or something to more accurately identify us.
It's really funny to me how Americans redefined Asia to mean East Asia. The ancient Greeks who invented the word used it to refer to Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Levant, Mesopotamia, Persia and parts of the Arabian peninsula. Similarly Africa meant the strip of land on the Mediterranean coast to the west of Egypt.
@@A1Sauce_ in Britain it’s different when someone says Asian it’s automatically refers to Indian first. They refer to China and other East Asian countries as east Asia or oriental. It’s interesting seeing how different countries call it different stuff
thank you for talking about "Indians" not being included when talking about asians. as an Indian i feel we should have much more representation. People hail movies(no hate on shang-chi loved the movie) for asian representation but theres almost never any indian subcontinent included in them. we are as toast said brown people and our roles are always the IT guy or the Desi guy. hopefully it changes.
Another great listen OTV. Toast is a good host to listen to because he puts out his honest opinion on things. Having John as an addition to OTV was a great move and it was a good listen to hear his past experiences before streaming. Keep the podcast episodes coming!
Ayo thanks for talking about us Indians lol I come from the Bay Area which has a huge asian community and like *we* don't even talk about Indians. We have our huge issues but as a whole India is just kind of detached from everything so it doesn't really get talked about or anything. I was ecstatic when I watched Squid Game because that was one of the first times I had seen an Indian character in really any form of media that didn't come from India. We kind of get the same model minority treatment as well so that's fun lol. Personally I feel like the progress "other" Asians get is progress for me but I know that not everyone thinks the same... it's weird man
this episode is by far the most natural out of all 9 episodes so far. think John's fluid conversation and Brodin's more contribution to the conversation than usual makes it much better.
I as an Indian don't usually say that I am an Asian but just as an Indian. This because of how the Western Countries categories different regions and India just has its own category for itself. I can say I am an Asian but people get me confused for an Chinese, Japanese etc. I have seen some repsentation in some dramas like New Amsterdam, the Resident, Quantico but I would love to see more main stream representation.
This is probably planned already, but an episode with every new otv member would be amazing. Loved hearing about John and everything, would be great to hear from Jodi and Syd too.
Got mad PTSD from Masayoshi talking about Starbucks LMAO. Loved working there and my coworkers (thankfully) but it was such a shit place to work at because of management (at least in my personal experience). But I was always in the warming section of Starbucks and I hard relate to Masayoshi talking about treating the drive thru times as a game. I got so fucking good at throwing in food into the oven because I was treating it like a game LMAO.
The viewer question segment where they talked about keeping close with parents really hit, especially Toast’s dream about his mother passing away and him never being able to eat her dish again. I had a similar dream where I was holding my father as he died and I woke up and broke down in tears even while trying to convince myself it wasn’t real, this segment just hit hard.
Personally speaking, Indian representation in NA culture is already growing. Glad to see them speaking about it as I am also a long time viewer of the OTV community and them standing up for it felt really good. But still getting to the point, even though Indian origin peeps are mostly relevant as CEOs or high position individuals in MNCs but in H'wood culture, it's still not that developed yet but hope to see it grow more with the current gen of Asian community as a whole
Thank you guys for the respectful chill talk, The biggest difference between Christianity and Catholicism is that Christians believe that you have to believe in Jesus to be saved and Catholics believe it’s good works
Celine please. I feel like she would be so interesting to talk to. She’s always been so open to talk about hard hitting stuff during her stream and learning from her viewers’ standpoint
John's emphasis on guilt with religion is interesting. Idk much about catholicism, but with christianity, trust in Jesus (who He is and what He has done) restores us into a relationship with God and actually frees us from guilt and shame; we don't do good things to be saved, but rather, because we are saved and in relationship with God, we trust God and want to do things His way.
There is a big emphasis on "original sin" in catholicism. There is the belief that those are not saved by Jesus until they are baptized. And from there, the relationship develops but as a kid, there is a good amount of emphasis on the guilt of sinning. Confirmed catholicism (but I don't practice nowadays)
Catholicism is the largest denomination of Christianity... When you're talking about Christianity I guess you mean Protestantism. The difference there is that Catholics believe in the church and Pope's ability to carry the voice of God
@@seb7271 Catholicism is crazy man…… they don’t worship Jesus alone they worship Jesus’ mother and his disciples too lol. Quite ironic bcos the disciples and the followers in the Bible said not to worship them ( Paul and Barnabas).
Well Christianity in general emphasizes improvement from within which is generally guilt-based, whereas most non-Abrahamic cultures are more shame-based.
Since Toast asked, you can think of Christianity as a pizza. Each slice of pizza (denominations of Christianity Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist etc.) are slightly different but all have the same core ingredients (beliefs). Take it from a pk this is the best analogy I have come up with. Fun Fact: catholic actually means Christian but if you say Roman Catholic with upper case letters and the specification that it a denomination of Christianity.
As an Indian-Canadian (sounds weird to say lol) I don't really care if someone calls me Asian or not because I've realised some people don't like grouping South Asia as apart of Asia. I've had conversations with people where I've called my prof Asian and they like gatekeep being Asian because the prof was brown. Weird but whatever. Another thing I've noticed with Toast which is nice is that he actually knows that there's more than just Indian and Pakistani. I feel that a lot of people just think brown = Indian or Pakistani even though there's a wide range of toasted people on this planet with a variety of different cultures. Yeah I'd like to see more representation in Hollywood but I can wait lol. It'll happen eventually. As we've progressed as a society more and more people of diverse backgrounds have joined Hollywood and tried to make it big. It will happen eventually.
John massively undersells SLO County the 805 area code is an absolutely beautiful part of California. Beautiful wineyards, surf spots/beaches and lots of farmland
If toast does want a good dumbed down version of the Bible there is some great kids ones. My dad used to read it to me and my brother before bed and even though we aren't a particularly religious family the storys are pretty good lmao
I don't know if this comment would be read or not by I am from India and I enjoy OTV a lot. The problem with India(I say problem but it's not a problem) is cultural density. What I mean by this, is that our culture, race religion etc is just concentrated in the Indian subcontinent. So... that's why Asians and Indians are kinda not considered the same. Toast said Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, for me(as an Indian), they come in one category, and we in a different category. IDK if that answers your question. Also, our skin color is like, you don't find that any where else except South America. So yeah, that's my take on the Indian thing. Thanks for talking about Indians, I really appreciate that. About Indian content on YT, it's that same thing. Everyone speak Hindi, so literally only people in subcontinent know that language, but that's like half the population lol. I don't really enjoy that kind of content and watch more "American" and "European" things(basically Western). ILY OTV
Speaking of him... Would be cool to have Toast and Corpse on a podcast. It could be just animated or something, no faces. I mean, their talk while playing Terraria was already so chill and fun to watch!
Whenever I see John and Toast together I always remember the Toast(imposter) and John(Jester) amongus game, it's so Iconic and it really show the amazing chemistry of these gentlemen
When john was describing the timer for drive thru, I had war flashback to my burger king days... Those jobs are so toxic for putting that timer. Let people take their time!!!! Who cares how long we take, those fuckers are getting their food either way!
Yeah, I agree. Most podcast videos or twitch streams go for about 4-6 hours. It's great to have something to listen to in the background while working on other stuff.
When Toast said they climb Coconut Trees, I think SEA Countries do that too. When you go to the beach and there's just Coconut Trees people will always climb it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Hard to know if OTV itself will even have a long-term. I feel like a lot of them will retire or move onto something else in their mid-30s or in 5 years.
"The Internet gave people their moral compass" No no no the internet allowed people to pretend they have a moral compass without getting called out by people who actually know them
19:34 they should do starbucks content like drive thru challenges. And let OTV see how difficult it was for exact 2 mins to prepare the order that need for the customer.. OMEGALUL
On the topic of California stuff: I'm in the Bay Area and it's really funny because everyone here is asian and esports is actually pretty big - Esports clubs at school are like actually popular - School wide smash tourneys - School discord servers before discord added the school specific thing My history teacher came from SoCal and turns out the people in NorCal say "hella" a lot (i thought it was normal lmao) and on the topic of drugs - Norcal: weed - SoCal: heroin, meth, hard drugs - California in general: a d d e r a l l
Hate hearing how people’s relationships with God were scarred due to church/community negligence and they therefore now hold a bit of resentment toward Christianity (likely because of poor representation by people who identified as having true faith). Hopefully, they can come to know the true love of Christ for themselves at some point in their lives. Amen. Also, I mean this in the most respectful way possible. I’m a non-denominational Christian; however, theologically, I guess one would identify me in the world as an Evangelical Christian. God bless! ❤️🙏

I'd say they don't leave out West Asia that much since that is the middle east, which has a lot of attention on it, for better oflr worse.
@@theultimaterage675 i just mean in how the asian community doesn't tend to recognise west asians as being asian or being part of our community.
52:55 ngl that hit hard, I love their honesty and kindness to even share these thoughts and discuss it openly, especially Toast here
Toast’s story about his dream about his mom was really nice and sad. It made me emotional.
@@Stevonicus
Yeah pretty much , I feel like British people or Irish know more about Asians compared to the usual American.
That underrepresentation part is something i've always thought about, being a middle easterner myself. We aren't asian but we're in asia, the government considers us white even tho we're brown. Media portrayal of us is usually just "war/peace in the middle east again."
Out of curiosity, why don't you consider yourself Asian?
@@k-rodkev-dog7449 asian as a race is for japan, korean, chinese and other related countries.
then there is middle east and india subcontinent

What's the difference between Asians and Koreans? 🤪
thank you for talking about "Indians" not being included when talking about asians. as an Indian i feel we should have much more representation. People hail movies(no hate on shang-chi loved the movie) for asian representation but theres almost never any indian subcontinent included in them. we are as toast said brown people and our roles are always the IT guy or the Desi guy. hopefully it changes.
I hope my stimmer doesn't kill the podcast again

Another great listen OTV. Toast is a good host to listen to because he puts out his honest opinion on things. Having John as an addition to OTV was a great move and it was a good listen to hear his past experiences before streaming. Keep the podcast episodes coming!
Toast being tricked to 2 weeks bible camp is his Villain Origins arc.

Also Toast: yeah I used to climb 20ft trees for nuts and fight jungle monke over McDonald's
Ayo thanks for talking about us Indians lol
I come from the Bay Area which has a huge asian community and like *we* don't even talk about Indians.
It’s so amazing seeing how much John has grown the past 2 years. I wished I found him out sooner.
After watching this I kind of want to see Toast in a podcast with Hasan. It would be so interesting to hear them talk.
It's inevitable. Once they get through main OTV lineup they'll probably start asking friends and other big streamers/youtubers in LA.
Once again a perfect podcast thing is digested so quick it's crazy wow
I read this as john said easy to digest bible
Personally speaking, Indian representation in NA culture is already growing. Glad to see them speaking about it as I am also a long time viewer of the OTV community and them standing up for it felt really good. But still getting to the point, even though Indian origin peeps are mostly relevant as CEOs or high position individuals in MNCs but in H'wood culture, it's still not that developed yet but hope to see it grow more with the current gen of Asian community as a whole
@@randomlivestreams5900 well representation would fix the ignorance
45:48 the whole segment brings back memories, I don't live in Malaysia but similar experiences happen where I live
Thank you guys for the respectful chill talk, The biggest difference between Christianity and Catholicism is that Christians believe that you have to believe in Jesus to be saved and Catholics believe it’s good works

@@brutalitops5876 wauw how could i forget.
9 minutes and its masayoshi !! His very relatable to me !! Lets goo !
I think Catholicism is more about the ceremonies and stuff it's not literally having a relationship with God.
This is a fire way of explaining it!!!
Can't believe it's been 9 episodes. All the episodes have been great, looking forward to more.
I like that Brodin talks so much this episode :)
Beautiful wineyards, surf spots/beaches and lots of farmland
yvonne's coming up every now and then is kinda a fun touch to the podcast :p
ILY OTV
As a starbucks worker getting ready to go in at 430am while listening to this...
The fact that I also used to work at Starbucks makes this is funny! Masayoshi seems so down to earth, really loving this OTV crew!🔥
As a Malaysian, I can confirm that everything that Toast said is very true.
Speaking of him... Would be cool to have Toast and Corpse on a podcast. It could be just animated or something, no faces. I mean, their talk while playing Terraria was already so chill and fun to watch!
Getting tricked into going to Quebec for two weeks sounds like a goddamn nightmare.
Ok but John's real last name is actually like Comic book worthy
That's a very American last name, cause almost all of American last names are just common words (Walker, Grey, Brown, Cable, Hill, Baker, and so on)
nowhere close to “almost all” lol that’s such a small portion of people in america
I believe it's actually from medieval Britain. Peasants often didnt have surnames and where thus called by their occupation.
Enjoying the podcast more and more every new episode.
John's name is actually fucking cool. When he said it it I was like, "like Cable the X-Man!"
"John Masayoshi Cable" is such a main character name lol
Whenever I see John and Toast together I always remember the Toast(imposter) and John(Jester) amongus game, it's so Iconic and it really show the amazing chemistry of these gentlemen

Brodin makes OTV Podcast feel like "The Office". 100% the best addition to OTV. Hope he stays with them for the long term.
Hard to know if OTV itself will even have a long-term. I feel like a lot of them will retire or move onto something else in their mid-30s or in 5 years.

I'm in the Bay Area and it's really funny because everyone here is asian and esports is actually pretty big
- Esports clubs at school are like actually popular
- School wide smash tourneys
- School discord servers before discord added the school specific thing

Thats not a nap you went to bed
Why did they change the title now two weeks after the video release?
Holy shit I never thought me and toast would have such similar thoughts on religion as a kid.

45:00 i love how brodin is the only one to laugh at that
Most indians that do youtube mainly speak Hindi so we dont get much interaction with outside communities. I think that's the biggest reason
It makes me so nostalgic to see OTV members talk about Maplestory :')
God bless! ❤️🙏
Yeah same.
I also feel like our representation on Internet spaces is kinda bad because we give off somewhat cult-ish vibes.
Which is unfortunate.
