Kohima, October 8: The School of Nursing, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima #NHAK celebrated its platinum jubilee on October 8 at Molu Ki, Merhulietsa colony (Paramedical), under the theme “Nurturing Nurses, Transforming Lives: Celebrating a Legacy.” P. #Paiwang Konyak, Minister of Health & Family Welfare, served as the chief guest, releasing a commemorative souvenir and addressing the gathering. Minister Paiwang #Konyak acknowledged the evolving healthcare landscape and emphasized the enduring role of nurses as the "heartbeat of care," providing not only medical support but also emotional reassurance and hope. He highlighted the integral role the School of Nursing has played in cultivating essential skills in nurses. He further informed the audience about the Central Government's sanctioning of two new nursing colleges attached to medical colleges-one at Nagaland Institute of Medical Science & Research (NIMSR) Kohima and another at the upcoming Mon Medical College. These initiatives aim to address the shortage of healthcare professionals, improve accessibility to nursing education, and enhance the quality of care in Nagaland. Konyak also shared plans by the state government to introduce nursing schools in all districts, aiming to increase job opportunities and make nursing a more viable career option. This move is in response to the growing demand for nurses both domestically and internationally. The existing schools in Kohima, Mokokchung, and Tuensang have been vital in producing skilled nurses. Additionally, he spoke of filling vacant staff nurse positions under a proposed recruitment policy that mirrors the system used for Auxiliary Nurse Midwives and Female Health Workers, with a balance between direct recruitment and queue-based appointments. Minister Konyak urged nurses to expand their professional scope beyond hospital settings to fields like home care and palliative care, both of which provide critical services in more personal, non-institutional environments. He also stressed the importance of embracing technological advancements and adhering to ethical and legal standards, particularly concerning data security and patient confidentiality. In his concluding remarks, Konyak paid tribute to the dedicated faculty and early pioneers of the institution, including two Spanish Catholic nuns and several doctors, for their foundational contributions. He encouraged current students and alumni to uphold the legacy of the institution by continuing to provide compassionate and skilled care. Finally, he congratulated the entire School of Nursing family on their remarkable achievements and urged them to remain committed to the values that have guided them for 75 years.
