I was told some 20 years ago by the best car guru I ever met, 'The difference between a technician and mechanic is, a tech can only follow a book, a real mechanic will fix the problem.' The old man always stayed up on the latest technology with vehicles no matter how old he got.

Thats what the comment is saying. The video essentially says this in the first minute too.
Mechanics often have the skills to do a tech's job and vice versa.

If anyone wants to divide mechanics up into two groups with one considered better than the other, you might want to first look at the skill set of mechanics 70 years ago compared to technicians today. Today's cars, trucks and motorcycles have computers, and mechanics or technicians have diagnostic equipment to interact with the computer and help them repair the vehicle, but in the past tune-ups were a real thing and repairing vehicles required machinist skills beyond operating a brake lathe. I think everyone in the vehicle repair field are mechanics and technicians. The names are interchangeable.

Remember when Walmart renamed their cart fetchers as "Shopping Cart Relocation Engineers"?
That's what a technician is. It's a fancy, self-righteous, self-indulgent, self-centered, self-important, self-appointed label used by prima donnas to try and elevate the way society views them.
    We are mechanics
    We are grease monkeys
    We are wrench turners
    We are gear heads
    We are car guys

At this point in the industry if you are a living breathing human being that can show up on time and pass random drug tests you are generally hired school or not. If you truthfully want to make this a long term career it requires being both mechanic and technician from you at any given point of the day and be open to unlearning what the school taught you wrong. I might be given 1job that is “replace leaking wheel seal” then I might get a “Check engine light” that is a J1939 code that requires me to disassemble half the truck to find the one bracket that a harness rubbed against and depending on accessibility run an overlay or make the splice repair on a twisted pair. I might then get yanked off that halfway through to replace rods and main bearings on an engine , then go over to a coolant leak. Or dealer install aftermarket accessories. Then you get the owner who already threw the parts cannon at an electrical issue and is impatiently waiting on you to find the short in his taillights. Don’t fool yourselves kids, you are going to get messy ,greasy and stressed as well. My days go from anything ranging from a 1989 model to a 2024 model across makes and models unless you find the ultra rare shop that will keep you on your speciality. But generally I’ve found the idea of being a specialist is a joke after 12 years in. Just some really and electric cars are coming it’s already in my web based training requirements for truck dealer certification. Thank God for Jesus Christ cause I couldn’t continue without Him.

Hahaha, even lawn car workers are lawn car technicians now, a mechanic can't be grouped with window wiper technician. Real mechanics know thier shit, either by the book, from real world experience or to go home and stay awake all night dreaming about the repair because the book isn't correct. Technicians go home empty headed. If you think you are a tech , and your good ( can weld, fabricate, use technology, use moral judgment , don't need the best of the best tool( cuz your brain is the best tool) your a mechanic. Techs will also lie when they're stumped and call some major part faulty. Mechanics remember every word of every conversation he's ever had about wrenching and most all repairs he's done and can recall said info at will. Techs can't remember what day it is let alone a previous repairs. Be proud if your a mechanic! If you to be a tech, so be it , with all the other technician jobs , like latte/expresso maker technician

I don't regret not goin to UTI. Their claims of Snap being the best of the best brand when DeWalt, Milwaukee, craftsmen and Makita all smashed snap on tools on the torque test channel. Their tuition is outrageously high. And the regular university teach the same way. They even have a need a drug test everyone. I said sure as long as we get to drug test you. Didn't go well there. My favorite. You can get a job anywhere. Yeah as long as it's under the brand you studied under when you were in school. Lol. And the last one. They think you can afford student loans when you paid them off. All the grant money they lied about in high school suddenly it's all been taken. Now you're so far so much into a negative balance. You'll be lucky if you pay it off when you're 70 years old. Remember in school they had the spelling bee. Chess tournaments. Even art tournaments? That meant if you didn't have a High IQ you wouldn't make it. Yeah schools really are for kids who have high IQ's. They just don't want to admitted it.

Dont matter how skilled you are if pay is not good enough.. it aint worth it.
And mechanic/ auto tech pay especially flat rate... sucks..!!!
Even worse with warranty jobs which is not you fault to begin with.
Imagine taking whole engine out, transferring covers, oil pan, plugs, coils, brakets, mounts, harness, head & gaskets. Putting em all back together , topping up fluids and refrigerants, test drive, paper work and you get paid for 6hrsor so..on warranty & 14 or so retail which is under 200 & 400$.
Same time you could be a plumber / electrician spend waaaayy less on tools ,way less to learn.., install a shower / switch board and make more than that.!!!
Passion wont pay you bills hommiee..

UTI is like any auto vocational school, you get out what you put in. You wanna fuck around at UTI or at a cc you're not going to make it in the industry, on the flip the applied student will come out with a ton of knowledge, the difference is uti will leave you in a ton of debt where a CC will be way cheaper. The CC program I graduated required us to finish all the NATEF tests think of it like a psat for the ASE. You're still learning the technology in vehicles and the theory as well as getting a little hands on experience. My main concern I see is young kids fresh from uti working at lube places that pay them less than what their buddy is making stocking shelves at wally world. They can't pay back their 50k debt. UTI recruiters are just as bad as college ones. Do you're research, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go to school, it separates the mechanic from the technician, it teaches you how to trouble shoot and problem solve. A CC will give you just as good or better theory than UTI
