  • Schea Cotton was Lebron James before anyone knew what a high school phenom even was. He had size at a young age, but never really grew into the body his style game was built for. What else held him back and stunted his growth?

    Lesson for young players.
Just because you play center for your high school team at 6-5 doesn't mean you can't work on your guard skills on the side or for your AAU team. You never know when you'll stop growing.

I first heard Schea's name in the book *Play Their Hearts Out: A Coach, His Star Recruit, and the Youth Basketball Machine* , by Sports Illustrated's George Dohrmann. The book chronicled Demetrius Walker, who went from "the next LeBron" at 14), to Grand Canyon, of all places. He was another early-riser (6'3" by age 13???) that stopped growing. The main connection with Schea was that they had the same AAU coach, Joe Keller, who for all his charisma, just wasn't an "X's and O's guy" .

Artist & that beat is dope! Stunted Growth - Great overall video thanks for doing.. Into is poetic & fitting & dope! You have video editing skills! . A couple things however in here on my boy Schea I feel are inaccurate however. 1) he wasn’t the top scorer on his Alabama team at 15pts. Ron Griziard who was leading scorer at about 20 was drafted also unlike Schea. :-( also since I see you have some of schea’s just released documentary “manchild” in here .. you should know from the film that he was stuck in the post “an undersized 4/5 post player due to injuries & a coaches decision” in which he almost transferred out. 2) what is your source for saying he would have been drafted #2 overall if he went hs to nba? I’ve never heard that! Wouldn’t that have been mentioned in schea’s doc if an agent told him that!? 🤔.... Schea should have went pro after he won the ca state title at md if a player could leave after the 10th grade if one ever did... it should have been Schea cotton point blank period! He was as nba ready then as he ever would have been. Like you stated his jr & Sr years were marred by injuries. But still he was #2 overall a scout said & a guarantee lotto pick? Id like to know what your source is.. idk about the #2 but he probably does get drafted & idk bout a lotto pick but sure the hype was still huge. But Schea has fallen off a lil baron Davis was getting hyped more by the time the 2 were seniors. I honestly think schea’s downfall was multifaceted. Injuries just like dee brown & countless other good ballers set him back... the ncaa was kinna the fall guy if you will, but he did have a lot of bad luck w both injuries & the ncaa.. it he goes hs to pro he doesn’t have to deal w ncaa.. but no one was going hs to pro! Only Kobe then kg did maybe in that same 97 class you stated in this video that Schea would go as high as 2nd.. idk about all that. Honestly all this I think Discouraged I couldn’t do wrong prospect & the Psyche of Schea cotton who you till then was regarded like an immortal god. It’s like Schea was too good too early.. even haven’t lightweight fell off Schea should have put his name & tried out for nba after hs. If there was no rules/age limit.... 10th grade & no I’m not joking!!.. Ron artest says same that he ought to have put his name in the Nba draft after 10th grade when he was at the highest of the high one can be at!. He had reached his peak in 8-10th grade. Schea what is one of those kids that was so good so early and had such a big gap between him & 2nd place around the LA & CA hoop scene and not much competition around him that I think he just got complacent and not better and people caught up to him with time with a lot of bad luck with the injuries & the NCAA thingy & his bro leaving lbsu. As the doc said “all Schea wanted to do was play w his big bro james at lbsu but James left early to go pro because of financial hardships at the time the family was dealing with”.. Schea people say was lebron before lebron.. & maybe so he was a 2 guard when in shape that could play bully ball like Barkley at the 3 or even 4 position.. but honestly Schea w the left hand the pt./forward & bully ball strength & dunking is zion Williamson moreso to me & zion is Schea cotton. Zion w a lil less strength height & lil more guard skills step back handle shoot off dribble etc.. things I really ain’t see zion do consistently but very similar games & generational impact they both had on the climate of b-ball

Schea still could have went hs to pro & got drafted but his family is kind of traditional (“old school” if you will) & weren’t in that dire financially speaking like some perspective nba kids from the inner city are thus I think they wanted him to garner an education though. It was said that Schea was going to play with his brother, James, at Long Beach State for one year and go pro which had me really excited as a Long Beach alum and season ticket holder. Would have had him, James, and the coach (at the time) Seth Greenberg playing in the newly built LB State on campus pyramid. I think Greenberg took off first for the South Florida coaching job and the James went pro and there went Schea. Had a few pros come out of Long Beach basketball, historically, but Schea would have been like nothing the athletics program would have seen before. I thought it sounded way too good to be true and it was.

This is crazy. But I just saw him play the 2019-20 season with Iona. I saw he had some good games, but when I read the comments about him they were saying he was inconsistent. I don't know why he went to Minnesota. They weren't going to let him play the way he was used to playing. Also I don't think he had good teammates either. I read an article, but I can't remember where. It's one thing to critique, but it's another to try to get a dude to completely change his identity. When you pick a school, you don't want to play with dudes that not only aren't winning, but are also satisfied with just playing on the bigger stages of college basketball. They're not looking to get better themselves and they're not looking to help a guy with potential to do good things get better.

As a licensed educator, I thought that a difference could be made with dedicated people. Being able to spot those in need and what their true learning style is was fascinating. Many don't care to know this at all. Schea Cotton didn't have a learning disability, he was simply an auditory learner. Shame on the franchise known a NC2A for penalizing him for such because once it became apparent Schea did better having instructions verbalized, you quickly discover he's super intelligent.

Didn't his parents screw up his career? He was supposed to follow his brother to Long Beach State (not LCC where he ended up), but when the coach (Seth Greenberg) left, his parents decided to go someplace else and controlled his career into the ground. The NCAA has some blame, but when I was following this, it always seemed that they thought Seth would be able to keep him local and get him the comfortable place to grow. When Seth went to FIU, he could have followed him there, but it seems like his parents wanted him local and tried to get him into UCLA. Too much time away from the game at the highest level stunted his growth.
