The biggest part that wasn't mentioned, is that you can find Dr Pepper on both Coca Cola and Pepsi fountains anywhere you go. That subsidizing to the top 2 makers really helps them.

Back in the early 2000's at several of the Domino's Pizza (corporate stores) I worked at as a delivery driver in far west Houston metro area, we noticed that our customers preferred the Dr. Pepper 20 oz bottle drinks more than any other soda flavors. So much that eventually (as the story was told to us) that Coca-Cola demanded that Domino's drop Dr. Pepper as one of the choices for our customers and replaced it with Mr. Pibbs (which was supposed to be Coca-Cola's version of Dr. Pepper). Our regular customers were NOT pleased with that change.

Dublin wasn't the original bottling plant, they just made it with Pure Cane Sugar the longest using the old recipe. I use to grab a bunch of them when I would travel through Dublin on my way to college in Alpine from East Texas around Tyler. Then I started to see them in stores around Tyler. I knew they had an agreement with Snapple to not sell outside the 3 counties around Dublin but thought it might have changed. Well, it didn't and they were quickly sued out of the rights to produce Dr Pepper. I felt bad for them but they did violate their agreement with Snapple in which they signed.

Most fast food or restaurant businesses sign exclusive deals with either Coca Cola or Pepsi to use their fountain drinks, but in Texas it's common for them to allow the option for the owner to also provide Dr Pepper. What I find interesting is that depending on what part of the country you live in, Dr Pepper comes in different bottle shapes because either Coca-Cola or Pepsi actually distributes it for retail. Arizona, it happens to be Coke, but when I lived in North Carolina, Pepsi distributed it. Crazy stuff.

It's completely messed up in Europe. In the UK (where coca cola produce it) the branding is completely different, as are the flavours. We occasionally get Dr Pepper imported from Europe to some stores, which tastes totally different and comes in different bottle designs. I believe Keurig own the rights and produce it themselves or license it to PepsiCo in Poland, which results in the weird mix match of drinks that are called Dr Pepper.
It's a super confusing mess of trademark law.

Due to the popularity of the word "pep" at that time period as seen in everything from coal and cocaine benefits to energy from radioactive products in the early to mid 20th century. And they simplified it down to "Dr. pepper" because it probably seemed obvious and simple as the pepper from the doctors. Dr. And pepper. Two easy words to associate with health and energy.
