- History of Rösti:
Rösti is a traditional Swiss dish that originated in the Bern region, the capital of Switzerland. Initially, it was a popular breakfast among Swiss farmers, providing them with a hearty and energy-packed start to their day.
Over time, Rösti transcended its origins in Bern and became one of Switzerland's national dishes. The simplicity of its ingredients-primarily potatoes with a touch of butter or animal fat-has made it a timeless favorite.
Interestingly, in Switzerland, Rösti is not only enjoyed as a standalone dish but is also served as a side with other traditional Swiss meals, such as fondue or local sausages.
Ingredients for Swiss Rösti
1: 4 medium potatoes (preferably waxy or starchy, depending on preference)
2: 2-3 tablespoons butter or oil
3: Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1: Prepare the Potatoes
For the best results, boil the potatoes with their skins on for about 10-15 minutes, until slightly cooked but still firm. Let them cool completely (preferably overnight in the fridge)
Alternatively, you can use raw potatoes, but be sure to squeeze out the excess moisture after grating.
2: Grate the Potatoes
Peel the cooled or raw potatoes and grate them using a coarse grater.
3: Season the Potatoes
Sprinkle the grated potatoes with salt and pepper, mixing gently to combine.
4: Heat the Pan
Heat the butter or oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat.
5: Cook the Rösti
Add the grated potatoes to the pan and spread them evenly to form a flat, round pancake. Press lightly with a spatula to shape the rösti.
Cook for 8-10 minutes on one side until golden and crispy.
6: Flip the Rösti
To flip the rösti, slide it onto a plate, place the frying pan upside-down over the plate, and flip it back into the pan. Cook the other side for another 8-10 minutes.
7: Serve
Once both sides are golden and crispy, transfer the rösti to a serving plate. Serve it hot with sour cream (i used Yogurt ) , fried eggs, smoked salmon, or any topping of your choice.
