I have visited Camp Hale outside of Leadville Colorado many times. Not much left but a huge empty field. But you can feel the presence of these brave men that were there so long ago. Thank you for such in depth information on their battles in Italy.

Brilliant video. Italian campaigns tend to get overlooked sometimes but that was amazing to watch 😊

Another excellent video on the 10th Mountain Division. Thank you for your insight and hard work making these videos. I always learn history that is not covered in books I read. Thanks Jon.

What an impossible mission, yet the 10th persevered. This video was very good. I had previously known little about this particular campaign.
Jon, thanks for another very good and informative video.

Really great presentation! I have a big interest in the 10th Mountain Division as well. In 2017 I visited Camp Hale (or what is left of it now) and have visited several sites and monuments dedicated to this division In Colorado. They have a very interesting battle record, and I feel not enough attention is given to them. Thank you for this great video.

The 10th Mountain was one of the last divisions to cross the pond to the ETO. They were also one of the first to return to the US. BUT, what they did during a fairly brief period in combat is truly astounding.
Not mentioned here in depth is the river crossing. They did this while protecting both flanks and their rear with few losses on the allied side. Overall, the 10th was down about 5K wounded and 1K killed by the end of this tale. That's over half their total strength coming in. These guys were tougher than woodpecker lips!
After the war, some of these guys founded ski resorts in the Mountain West. One of them, Bob Dole ended up as a Senator and a presidential candidate. Camp Hale still exists and was still used for military training into this century.

Absolutely fascinating. The British had the same unit trained in mountain, cold weather fighting, The Cameronians SR Mountain Division. My dad’s regiment, I had the pleasure of meeting some of these tough Glaswegian men, 🫡 Per Adura

A very interesting place to visit. I have cycled and raced around the Gothic line area. There is an amazing museum with many of the artefacts given to them by the locals. There is a nice cafe/bar now at the top. The German bunkers still exist and have been restored and looked after my the museums.

Great episode on the lesser discussed italian campaign. I've read several accounts of Darby and his Rangers through Sicily and Salerno and the man was nothing short of a hero. Nice to see the town and a memorial in his remembrance. Thank you.

An Elite video about an elite unit 10th Mountain Division. Rivia Ridge and Belmont Mountain, then the Po River and onto Lake Garda. Who fought against the Germans, the terrain, the weather and succeeded but paid a heavy price in soldiers .
Just ss a side note Riva del Garda and Torbola today is very beautiful, we took a boat trip down the lake. One other thing the lake water is very cold.

Great episode. I've always thought that the Italy campaign in Europe, and the New Guinea campaign in the Pacific never get enough coverage. No doubt the soldiers who fought in Italy were brave, etc, but also i've always thought that starting in Jan '45, the Italy campaign was pointless and uncessary. The fight had shifted to western europe, aiming for berlin. that's what was going to end the war, not pressing a fight in the under belly. there was nothing strategic to be gained by continuing to press the fight in Italy. sure, keep a presence there to tie down german forces, but don't incur unnecessary casualties for an effort that has no strategic value. also, seems like a lot of the attacks and raids conducted would have been ideal for the first special service force - the devil's brigade. after they finished ops in southern france, they could have shifted back to italy to help there. they were expert mountain fighters (monte la difensa) and specifically designed for these types of ops. instead, they were ignominiously disbanded in dec '44. what a waste. even though they were a smaller unit because of casulties, they could still operate as a battalion element. coulda, shoulda woulda.

Agree with your post. You aren't wrong.
Operation Dragoon was also a waste. Resources that could have been used in the chase of German forces after Falaise. Dragoon achieved little, as few German forces were tied down by it. All it did was place more problems on supplying more allied forces.
