    • @ivanashley7875

Praise? It seems living in the UK makes him appreciate America more. OK he wasn't too disparaging about the UK, but I think he should read our food labels before dissing it in favour of the chemically infused US produce. As for future imports from America, those same labels will allow the more discerning Brits and Americans to continue to make healthy choices.

Welcome to England! The Sunday Roast is any roasted meat really, Turkey is usually just for Christmas, chicken is common as are beef, lamb and pork. Vegetables are boiled usually not steamed and the roast potatoes are partly boiled after peeling and then roasted in a separate tray to the meat. Gravy is a massive part of the meal and can be either ready made granules or stock from the meat and some wine. Each type of meat we roast has a condiment that adds to the flavour. So roast beef comes with horseradish sauce, lamb comes with mint sauce, pork comes with apple sauce and chicken or Turkey often have cranberry. You will often get stuffing and Yorkshire pudding on a roast as well. Next to the Full English breakfast the Sunday Roast is possibly our most comforting and enjoyable meal. Have fun over here and next time you're in a kebab shop try a Lamb Shish, so much tastier than a doner!

Generally speaking, food costs are much lower in the UK. Re' standard of living, It's swings and roundabouts really. For instance, housing costs are much higher in the UK but healthcare costs are less than half what they are in the States and that's before we even get to all the extra costs not covered by US health insurance. Not having to worry about healthcare costs makes a HUGE difference. Something you'll realise as you get older or if you fall seriously ill. :)

Yeah, seems kind of funny. It's even funnier when you realise that Chinese have the most varied number of ways to cook potatoes. Not necessarily the best, but the greatest number of different ways. But definitely roasting them in an oven has never been a thing - I think mainly because Chinese people don't really have ovens (at least not big on them). It's common for stalls/restaurants to have massive furnaces, but ovens in the home aren't a thing and thus roasting potatoes has never been a thing. Seems a simple thing, but definitely one of the best ways to eat potatoes.

If your only experience of living in England is the Manchester area then I'm afraid the, weather there I almost always damp and cold. Come to lincolnshire. The weather here is so much better, even today its freezing out but not a cloud in the sky. A beautiful winter's day. Plus, here is one of the driest places in the UK . Our summers are on Average really good.

@@tonyska It's simple. There are no such people as British. We are either Scottish, Welsh, Irish or English. British or Britain is the flag or the mix of the countries combined. @@DarrenHarrison7160 Well, first of all, my original comment about British sarcasm was just a light hearted remark. I would say sarcasm spans the whole of what we call Britain. As for whether being British really exists, that's an interesting question. If we strip it down, what are any of us? Borders are merely man made lines drawn on a map. There were ancient Britons before being invaded by various tribes. Did they have a line drawn in the sand? Personally, I'm happy to call myself English, part Welsh and also British. I'm also fine with those who want nothing to do with being labelled British. Follow your own path and let others follow theirs...👍

England - or Britain - has been mostly secular for much, much, much longer than ten years. We may have been religious on the face of it, in terms of customs and regular churchgoing up until perhaps WWII, but we have never really been religious in the way the US is.

Hope you haven't tried driving in South Africa. Like you, I have driven in many countries throughout the World, including driving through the middle of Bangkok, Thailand but SA is something else. They do not use their signals (indicators), this might cause you to guess what they mean to do. They ignore all stop signs, drive in the "fast lane" lane at 20mph because they wish to turn in 2 miles down the road. Their MOT test (Roadworthy test) only has to be taken when you sell the vehicle so many vehicles have not been tested for 20 years or more. Any traffic infringement can be sorted my giving the police officer ZAR20 (GBP1) if you are black or ZAR200+ (GBP10+) if you are white or Indian.

Spot on with Yorkshire Pudding and Roast Potatoes! I think that Cantonese food is an interesting combination of a lot of things. The Canton area has gone through famine and everything at one point was cooked for food to be safe and this evolved into pleasing all the senses (smell and taste) so you'd cook everything. But it's also coastal and did become wealthy at times in the past and so it became big on seafood and meat dishes. English influence sort of made some dishes have more sauce also I believe. As the rest of China introduced new salad / cold dishes over the last 20 years, this hasn't happened to Cantonese food. Many Cantonese people don't therefore like the food of other regions. And yes, those that migrated to the U.K. kept with tradition whereas China moved on so a lot of the more traditional stuff can be seen in the U.K. And it's language also - China moved on to use Simplified Chinese, but the immigration of Chinese people were using Traditional Chinese. Anyway, other good stuff to try that many Chinese people like in the U.K. - try a fruit trifle if you haven't already!

Life isn't more expensive here - we don't pay directly for healthcare (it's a tax), the level and way debt affects you for studying at university is far less crushing, we have employment laws that protect carefully wages and making sure we don't end up in situation where we're paid less than minimum wage (if you do your employer is CRIMINALLY liable, they can go to prison for that). In the UK you can comfortably live on about £40,000 a year which is around $45,000 - would that salary be considered comfortable in the US?

@@0utcastAussie I live in London, where £40K is much more achievable than other parts of the country. I wasn't saying it was a normal or average salary (the national average year salary before the pandemic was around £29K). My point is that you can't do a simple like for like salary/cost of a single item in a store between the states and here and say here is more expensive, because it's far more complex than that. That guy was saying a steak is far more expensive here than in the US as if that was representative of cost of living and it isn't.
      Does that make sense?

I've just had a life threatening illness and can't work. I'd heard horror stories about universal credit. My experience is the opposite. Because I'm now medically unfit for work I get a total of about £1,350 a month including work incapacity and housing benefit. I'm not in the expensive South East so it's more than enough as a single bloke, and because of lockdown it's not like I have an expensive social life at the mo', I'm quite content, all the bills are still taken care of.
