Ooh, it makes me so happy to stumble upon this reaction! I was actually on a Nightwish reaction hunt, but to find you dissecting this song is absolutely wonderful. This is an old favorite of mine, that back in the 1980s accompanied me through some hard times. Your explanation helps me understand how the magic of this song was created. Thank you so much! (Oh, and I checked the cd liner notes - yes, still have the cd's - and there's no detailed info on the instruments there. I'm sure true Crowded House fans will know.

It's that "To build the wall betweens us" that charms me. It's such a beautiful melody line.

Crowded House as well as Split Enz - the first band being lead by Tim Finn and the second by his brother Neill Finn - are in my opinion straight on main stream pop-bands, but as such certainly stood out from the masses through their compositions. If you hear either of them played on the radio in the background, you'll certainly notice their music over the formulaic mess pop songs tend to have become.

I had not caught this reaction. It's so good to hear a song from my younger days. As an Aussie, the Finn brothers were adopted Australians. Their music is so beautiful. It makes me smile too.

Interesting perspective on this song, and this is coming from a fellow metalhead. In the early 2000s, an interview with Dave Mustaine from Megadeth was published, in which the journalist asked the question of if he has accomplished everything he wanted to do. Mustaine replied that if everything were to come to an end, or he'd die in a plane crash or something similar, he would die a happy man, because he "would have a picture of his wife and family with him, and all of his Crowded House CDs with him."
While I have always been a Crowded House fan (have been since I was 12 in 1986; my first time seeing them live - funnily enough - was their last show with their original lineup: Farewell To The World, in Sydney), for a guy from the Big 4 to have that much love and respect for Crowded House tells you how much metal Crowded House truly is. One thing about metal music (read: goes against the grain and makes it last) is its relevancy. You can take any Crowded House song, and the lyrics and sound of it are still relevant to this day, even though their first album is coming up on 40 years old - just about as old as each of the Big 4's biggest albums.

Just thought I’d let you know, here in Australia, ANY BAND that makes it big from New Zealand, we claim as one of ours. So in case you get comments about them being Australian, that’s why. I don’t know what Kiwi’s think about that however as there is a friendly rivalry between the two countries. Anyway I consider it so, perhaps that’s not correct. ❤️🤘🎸🇦🇺

these are kiwi performers in an Aus band?? Split Enz though were a kiwi band. Aus band as that is where they were when it was formed. As if it matters lets call them a ditch band 🤣

Look, I'm no producer, but I know how much I enjoy and appreciate you and I think you have stumbled on brilliance ( well, not stumbled...you know what I mean ). I was an MTV teen, those cheesy top 40 videos were the soundtrack to my early youth. But you have exposed the fact that there are some excellent musicians and songs mixed in there. My old friends and I agree, we would be fascinated with your dissection of some of the best ones...please consider it...will watch no matter what you do. Great video, thanks...

It's great to see real musicians waxing lyrically over an 80s band. The decade that changed my life as far as music is concerned the drum riffs and base lines are amazing. Thank you for doing CROWDED HOUSE & hope you do more.

Beautiful song and great to see someone enjoying it so much. It’s good to share. I also love the song ‘ Four seasons in one Day’ by them. Very atmospheric as well and takes me back to the first time I did a long distance walk in the uk (coast to coast trail) after finishing my studies, about a thousand years ago. Title matched the weather as well.

RIP Peter Jones, former drummer for Australian band Crowded House, died aged 45. Liverpool native had been suffering from brain cancer.
C.H is known for hits such as: “Don't Dream It's Over,” “Something So Strong” &
“Weather With You.” (Re: Info I found on the net.)

Love a bit of Crowded House. If you want to turn the melancholic to 11, listen to Silent House from the Time on Earth album. They just have a knack of grabbing you right in the feels.

Is it weird that I pop into comments for Jinjer, Whitney Houston, & now Crowded House?! #IfItsQualityItsQuailty LOL
The always-excellent Tim Pierce uploaded a vid folks may appreciate as a compliment to this. Just search "I played Guitar on "Don't Dream It's Over"" on the Toob.
Have you come across the also always-excellent Mike Dawes at all John? I'd love to see what you make of his one-man-and-an-acoustic-fingerstyle-masterpiece cover of of Van Halen's "Jump", given that it's a keyboard track that Mike manages to condense onto the one instrument. I'm not asking for a reaction vid on it, but you *must* experience it.... it's #Transcendent imho ;)

@@JWSoundworks2 Oh, you'll *absolutely* appreciate what he manages to come up with in the VH "Jump" I mentioned. It makes me happy to introduce you to Mike Dawes.... what a player.... & what an *arranger* ....& possibly most impressive given his crazy talent, what a thoroughly decent bloke he is too! :)
He did a great wee livestream with the also excellent Michael Palmisano which shows what he's all about if you'd like to know more about him & the fingerstyle scene. ;)

@@badm0t0rf1nger will definitely have to check out Jump, at the very least. I used to play that song a lot when I did the Wedding Band circuit years ago! So I know it pretty well! :D Cheers! I haven't listened to much overtly fingerstyle stuff in years. Used to listen to a lot of Preston Reed, Andy McKee, Martin Taylor etc. Caught Martin Taylor live once. Pretty humbling experience lol!

Amazing reaction my friend JW!!....In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just It was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coach, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 and 5 years have passed since then, but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you...You have to be prepared because you ar going to receive an avalanche of views, comments and new subscribers....I leave you one more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....th-cam.com/video/bDX3FhmyNac/w-d-xo.html
