What a race between 1st and 2nd. Right from the start the Australian had the advantage with more efficient strokes and turns. The American swimmer flip turned a bit too close to the wall, which caused a slower kick off, and also earlier breakout, and that accumulated over the many turns. You can tell the Australian swimmer's stamina planning is very well calibrated, after the dreadful 3/4, starts to speed up and only showed signs of exhaustion by the last 50 of the 1500 swim, and even then the strokes never fell apart.
What a great comeback, never give up in distance races
