  • How To Buy Opal? How to Value Opal?
    A snippet from the livestream just discussing some of the major things to keep an eye on when you are trying to buy opal in todays technology based era. It doesnt cover anything in a huge amount of detail but hopefully it can give you a starting point to keep yourself safe from clearly dodgy sellers.

      Certainly is... when they play nice. Otherwise it is like getting kicked in the teeth but that just adds to the fun.

    I have to mention this: As a jewelry photographer, I have newly noticed this, while displaying ther polished stones, they sometimes intentionally add an extra yellow light in the ceilig to create an illusion that you're also getting yellow flashes. also one other trick, while looking at parcels, I notice for 6 or 8 piece parcels, some of them overlay images of the whole lot with color play but in the actual video you'll find 3 or 5 pieces that are actually mute, but in the overlayed photo, they've taken layers from different lighting positions to where the reflection bounces back into the lens and overlayed them to show that they all face the camera or the viewer in this case. Thans for brining this up. I'm glad you realise the wonder of their fingers and saturation, once avatar, once shreck, once satan.... 😛

      It does help to have a bit of warmth to the light it the daylight lamp has low CRI as it can balance the lack of warm tones. The opal shops all do this with a combo daylight and warm led alternating.
      The overlaying is something pretty common but I myself have not bothered with it as I find it a little to artificial though it can certainly lead to "amazing" results but accuracy can certainly be lost.
      Good points.

      @RoysRocks I understand, but they were shooting a coober pedy crystal that had nearly zero colour, and it was on a glossy black background, so there was no reflective surface to benefit or reflect the warmth, they were just catching the specular highlights. Anyways CRI is about the colour rendering index, it's a measurement they use between lighting brands in comparison to how high fidelity the color representation and accuracy is. And daylight is the way to go indeed. However with Opals, especially the blues, what you need is a camera with high CBD and DR and that's how you can show the true blues without cloudiness and haze. Love your videos so much ✌🏻👌🏻

    One thing to note on #8 Reputation- everyone seems to have different expectations when they are buying opal, and just because a seller has one or several negative reviews does not mean that it is a bad seller. One thing you can do is check for repeat customers and what they say, or check and see if a user seems to have problems or nitpicks everything. Not trying to prop up dodgy sellers or anything like this but it's always good to consider that some people are very hard to please.
    Research is key to this process and getting as much information before you buy can save a lot of hassle. Myself having a fairly good knowledge of opals but never a buyer, I spent months doing my research before purchasing and it has worked out nicely!

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True but there are some pretty bad sellers out there with an almost cult following of return customers.
      Also another side note is that peoples idea of a "good" vs "bad" seller can be different. We all rate things differently so some may hold certain things as highly important while others would say it isn't that important at all.

    How do I always miss your lives? Too busy outside with the “Dogs” ... sorry 😂
    Absolutely fantastic tips Roy, you’re my go to guy for anything and everything I need to know! The best thing is your honest, such a rarity these days. You say it as you see it and don’t sugar coat the bad side of things, highly commendable in a world where everyone is so easily bought, thanks for keeping it real.
    Last thing, how come I’ve never seen the Opal shops when I’ve been over to Adelaide? It’s one of my favourite cities and I’ve wandered the streets with my camera several times, but can’t recall an Opal shop. Better keep my eyes open next time I’m over (when the boarders sort themselves out).

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man. I still reckon I sugar coat things a bit too much LOL. I always give the benefit of the doubt and many times it turns out I shouldn't have.
      Not sure which streets you are walking down in Adelaide if you are missing all the opal shops? I could show you at least 3 just in rundle mall!

    All excellent points and advice. As both a buyer and a seller, I can honestly say "I resemble some of those points at times." Having taken thousands of photos of rough and polished stones, lighting is so finicky . Last night I was taking pics of a stunning polished shell piece, the colors are blinding brilliant in person but the pics make it look bland, on the other hand some darker rubs with a little color look too good and customers might be 😞disappointed. but, yes, the more pics sellers can provide, balanced with proper buyer expectations helps.

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's so much harder to get the camera to show the opal as it is than cutting half the time! Definitely tricky.

  • @zoinkaboose

    I know I'm late to the party, but if you don't mind.... How does the wholesale price compare to retail price? In other words, what's the markup percentage?

    • @zoinkaboose
      @zoinkaboose ปีที่แล้ว

      If you wanna elaborate on this, perhaps give your opinion on the markups for parcels of rough, rubs, and finished stones.... And as always, THANK YOU for you for sharing.

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wholesale is much lower than retail. If I go to my local opal shop and buy a nice stone it could cost say $1000. Wholesale price you could get that same stone for a quarter of that.
      The more valuable the stone, the bigger the distance between the two I typically find.
