Bra-vo !! :O .
This was a really interesting quest. Thankfully I had the good ending. I really thought Reinald couldn't kill a person cause he was a spirit lol so I brought priest in but chose the right answer.
I honestly chose the neutral ending because while I disagree with "never forgive, never forget," I also don't believe the negative effects of any religion in terms of abuse and things like that are automatically the cause of that religion. In some cases they are and can be but from how the deacon described it, the Eternal Fire religion was based on teachings that were taken in an extremist and abusive as well as highly-politicized direction and this was worsened by the war. Same reason I didn't kill the "all-god" in the 'Greedy God' quest or the leshen that was being worshipped on Skellige in the contract quest there (in the leshen's case, you learn it'll just come back anyway so killing it ultimately does nothing). If it was definitively proven a cult or religion was altogether false or exploitative (such as the allgod), I simply had Geralt point it's followers in the right direction
A religion can be, depending on what it teaches, morally good. But a church, like the church of the eternal fire, is an institution centered on a religion, not the religion itself. The church of the eternal fire, as it is during the events of the game is really corrupt and bigoted towards non humans, magic beings and witchers. The kid is well intentioned but if he spents much longer living his life as a member of that corrupt institution, letting it seep into how he views himself as a person, he'l become just as corrupt. You can already see this in the neutral ending where he does some mental gymnastics to deflect the blame from what happened. What makes him realize his church fucked up and is falible is the shock of seeing its consequences.
God the good one, and to be honest I think it's not as good as it's neutral too, since you just counter-argument Reinald saying it ain't all that bad and you shouldn't blame and individual for something he didn't know/control, where there's something bigger behind him. It's still a quest in the game but if we take it serious, just because some characters are brainwashed by religion as in this case, doesn't mean we can blame them, at the end those characters are "foolish" without being able to have thoughts on their own, therefore everything related to eternal fire is just a broken record since all they say is the same from every mouth. Would like to make a parallel with real life, even if it's wrong, but religion does offer people rules that they live by, therefore making it easier, taking off responsibility, and offering an unseen reward, and all you have to do is believe, well at least we're lucky because it's not as hostile as eternal fire. Everything that has any power will be controlled to control others within the reach. Quest was amazing btw, DLC level kind of thing.
There is another ending that I consider it equally good: if you go down the "neutral" ending path and choose to spare the details during the final conversation with the deacon, he will ask for your name to include it in the writings so everybody knows who saved the world from the red miasma. Geralt then says the name to put in the writings is Reinald.
Late reply, but I think Xletalis covered this stating that if you don't encounter the first priest that was selling fisstech, then you don't have a reason to be fussy about them.
I feel you , but not me. This quest was too much for me. The adrenaline and dread in my body right now after just finishing this mission is REAL. I'm so creeped out and sad I need to play Mario Brothers right now. Great story telling to have me messed up like this!
You know what I think a part of it was? I was drinking this super strong coffee while playing and think I was experiencing the jitters. Felt a bit numb in my hands, funny, and out of body a bit. I was beginning to feel like I was getting possessed like Reinald and was freaking out!
i randomly saw this quest. what was his story? why osmund didn't send someone to save him or why nobody tried? and who is osmund anyway? how do we know his name? i missed something but what?
Reinald never sent the letters. How could he? He was trapped inside the Cave. And you find the letters inside the cave. He wrote them and probably hallucinated sending them because he was possessed by the Red Miasmal.
There is notes at Kaer Morhen that you can find once you completed this quest. Osmund was another witcher who was working on new witcher armor at the time, and his friend Reinald wore a prototype. Osmund was on his way to Novigrad. The notes did not specify, but somewhat Osmund suffered traumatic head injury and lost consciousness. When he came to, the doctor determined him unable to regain his speech and other thoughts. This may explain why Osmund was unable to follow up with what happened to Reinald and came to his rescue. Sad quest.
