- These commercials aired in February of 1994
1. Pepsi/TV Spot for "Blue Chips" (I'm have no idea how to describe this, as it's an ad for a movie AND a soft drink!)
2. "Reality Bites" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
3. Reebok
4. Topps Stadium Club (That's Matthew Fox at the very beginning! "Yeah Right!" LOL)
5. Viper Auto Security Systems (OMG I love the cheesy CG snake!)
6. Station ID (God these things are weird)
7. "Free Your Mind Spoken Word Tour"
8. Promo for "Babylon 5" (Coool)
9. Disco Fever (Another record compilation commercial I have memorized in my head for some bizarre reason)
10. Vibe Magazine (With a free CD!)
11. Station ID

I actually wrote and produced the Blue Chips commercial for Pepsi, including writing the "Which Way?" rap that pushes it along. Wish I could remember the studio guys who performed it -- they did a great job. Long time ago, though. The one thing I do remember is that it was one of Shaq's very first commercials and, well...let's just say he's come a long way and leave it at that. Fun to see it again.
you wrote it?
Awesome!
I look at these commercials and realize that today's can't stand on the same line as these. I was born during these times and watched many while I was young. Now that I'm 20, I've came to realize that not only do the commercials of today fail, but are no where near as inspirational and imaginative as these gems. Long live the 90s baby. Cheers
Ahh, those commercials with disco and old rock songs. I remember enjoying them.
"I love disco...and I hear it's making a comeback!" This line has stuck with me for 19 years. Those old '70s Preservation Society commercials were hilarious.
I always loved how weird and artsy the MTV bumps were back in the day. It made me more interested in independant art and stuff.
Gotta love the acting in the Disco Fever ad. The expression of the guy on the right when she mentions it is great. I love how he immediatly drops what he's doing to listen closer. "I love disco, and I hear its making a comeback!" is something you'll never hear outside of that commercial.
Love the old Pepsi logo! So glad they are using in on throwback.
I too have been happy to see Pepsi (and other soft drinks) go retro in recent years.
The "new" Pepsi can actually looks retro now.
Everything was Xtreme! in the 90's... I don't remember anyone saying it IRL though. Was it just a silly marketing word?
My slightly twisted right-brain loved the 90's MTV Station IDs
"What am I gonna do with 40 subscriptions to 'Vibe'?"
Disco really made a comeback:) Actually I am glad you posted these, the B5 one made me curious, but I was initially looking for that disco commercial and roundaboutly found it. Thanks!
Wow, seems like just YESTERDAY that those Viper Auto Security commercials were on!!
It's not just an ad for a soft drink and a movie, it's also promoting a crossover celebrity, a basketball team (and league), a rap group, general conformity, and the ad agency who put it all together. Pretty filthy stuff.
That Blue Chips commercial confused the hell out of me.
Whooooaaaaa... i was born in '93 but it feels like i saw that viper commercial yesterday
The Posies!!!!! They were on the Reality Bites soundtrack -- great band
If you want more spoken word and 90s music goodness, check out the 2-disc "Home Alive" compilation, it features John S. Hall and again, The Posies!
Hey Beavis, I love disco, and I hear its making a comeback. HUHUHUH
you can't get any more 90's than "Reality Bites"
who in the world would think up all those bizarre station IDs?
those compilation albums used to be my faves
And that's definitely Bill Bellamy doing the voice over for the Vibe commercial!
@usamimiproductions Maybe not in '94 exactly, but I remember there being moderate disco (And 80's) interest later on around '97, back when MTV was on the decline and VH1 was popular. Also, it just seems like listening to older music was a lot more common then.
wow, intellectualism on MTV, how things have changed.
@kari00ws6 Only the primitive stagecoach alarms of the old west used real snakes.
@usamimiproductions I remember there being a slightly renewed interest when I was in high school and I graduated in '96.
@SuperAssPie Office Space FTW!
With Blue Chips, they managed to make a pretty mediocre movie (with a terrific cast) out of a subject that should have made a pretty fantastic film.
I remember being terrified by Reality Bites, since I was 17 when it came out, and I was nervous that college would turn me into a hipster douche (or whatever terminology we were using in the mid-90s).
I was highly amused that in a scene that should have been several weeks later, the two disco fans were still wearing the exact same clothes.
Is it me, or does the dude from the Station ID ad look ALOT like Steve-o? Er...with make-up, that is.
@kari00ws6 me too
