"Now I don't fear again" What is amazing to me is that this woman I will never meet said these words into a camera, hundreds of miles away, and here, now, I can hear them and be comforted by them, and she will maybe never know.
Wow, this comment is 5 years old and the world seems so much madder. But the beauty persists. This is still one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.
Ruth is incredible! I'm always impressed by Bella's ability to just fit in perfectly without days of prep. - Truly talented and he's so humble about it!
American's need to start having full blown jam sessions like this more often. I think we could cure alot of problems with just a daily dose of some good music and good people.
This is the musical essence of pure Africa, unspoilt rhythms and a raw earthy mix of harmony - wish i was there to hear it live! Bela not bad as an accompaniment but there were a few times when I thought he was just a bit over the top.
I'm watching this documentary rite now. Know that the banjo is an Afrikan instrument brought to the west by slaves. The banjo is not for just mountain and country & western music. Thanx Bela Fleck !!!!!!! (^.^)
Fascinating Movie and that beautiful woman was incredible on her kalimba (thumb piano)...Bela of course is always Beal and always brilliant...I'm so glad he made this wonderful film...Jack Baker NYC
Only after four years do I at last see what cultural body language there is, in every frame of this film. It tells an amazing story right infront of our eyes
A truly wonderful film. It is just brilliant. If you have the opportunity to see it, do so. You will find it time well spent. You may even be able to purchase the CD at this late date. Money well spent. I saw Bela in Vancouver at the Chan Center and I was stunned by his virtuosity. I come back to this clip every now and again just to remind myself that there is indeed harmony on this planet.
Man! These guys know how to party! I wanna go and hang out with them!!! :( its so cool that they just gather around and start playing... and theyre REALLY good at it too!!! YOU GUYS RULE!! :D
The movie/documentary this is from is one of the coolest ever. More musicsl history than u have learned before, and the village drum n banjo session sounds like a grand orchestra. Loved it. Well done. Mike
HA! Beautiful. The banjo sounded beautiful with the adungus. The banjo, an old west african instrument, combined with east african music; it's like two sister parts of africa meeting together with eachother.
I introduced my preacher friend Henry Musana to this song and he started laughing. They are from his tribe and he heard it in Indiana, USA first. Hallelujah! Jesus is the only answer that I know!
George Parkins The banjo is actually an African instrument, if you watch later in the documentary there are some stringed instruments used by another group (I think in Mali) that could be early versions of a banjo
That's what I was getting at, yes. I always heard that the banjo derived from the Kora, but it could have been a discredited theory. At any rate, it would be more correct to say that the banjo is an African-American instrument.
George Parkins If I remember correctly, that's the reason that Bela decided to make this album/documentary - he wanted to record African music and banjo playing together since the banjo comes from Africa. I don't know which instrument specifically is its predecessor but it's definitely an African instrument, you're right about that.
@lyleworks There is a big boxed base m'bira (thumb piano) being shown @ 1:00 and 1:45 that the player is sitting on. I think they have it miked and EQ'ed pretty heavy.
@@calivette2020 LOL, "World Music" isn't a real genre. The world is a big place and the continent of Africa has several of its own specific music genres. I'd say this music sounds like Semba music. Hope this helps.

Never underestimate the power of a musician. That is why politicians dont like them so much.
You said it, man.
this might be the happiest song I've ever heard. you can FEEL Ruth's freedom.
your true i feel the song too
That's because it speaks the truth...Jesus IS the only answer :)
exactly, you can hear her freedom. all of it is beautiful. Wish I could meet everyone here
Thank God there's still true beauty in this mad world...
AMEN

@@patternbased it unites humans. Regardless shape, height, language, ethnics..thats (i guess) the ultimate mission of music.
@@claudiocruzat8777 a noble thought indeed. thank you!
One good thing about music; when it hits, you feel no pain.
Emotional pain?

Bela just took the Banjo back home for a reunion.
Wonderful!
A heart piercingly beautiful piece of music.
Bela is absolutely loving what Ruth is doing that little solo during 1:58 and 2:06
If you don't fall into the groove and feel this at a cellular level you are dead inside.
yes kevin
Aaaahahahah Heavy.....but true too
know what you mean, but how about a little less morbidly: "when you ... this can make you feel alive with the beauty and joy of life".
I love this song....Bela's banjo is perfect along with the thumb piano.....and the vocals are perfect....I love African music...
This is the musical essence of pure Africa, unspoilt rhythms and a raw earthy mix of harmony - wish i was there to hear it live! Bela not bad as an accompaniment but there were a few times when I thought he was just a bit over the top.
This is Planetary Music right here! Thank God for more than American music.
American music isn’t even American it’s just styles taken from various cultures of the world.
Such an amazing collaboration. I could listen to her sing this song over and over, and sometimes I do. :)
:) me too, over and over!!! ~ mmmm~ hallelujah its a good day~
yay humans!
Flying with all of you in 2021! I've been called a wizard too. Ruth, you are my hero!
Bela is the man... I’ve been such a huge fan of him musically. There are few who can do what he does on that banjo.
Thank you for posting. This was my favorite song from the movie!
I love the way they approve of what Bela is doing .
Watched the entire documentary. I'm not surprised that this one scene has been highlighted. The singing is fantastic!
AT 1:02 I smiled sooooo BIG!!!! Blessings and love from Texas! Let us live in Love and love with NO fear!! Praise Jah!

wow i never knew that! brilliant fact
not exactly. the banjo was derived from african instruments. not invented there
Almost the entirety of popular music today comes from the mix of African and European scales, rythms and instruments.

Yoooo, the notes Bela is grooving on around 2:47 are the 808 cowbell!!
Verdade muito legal!
The joy hit me like a brick- and kept me dazzled throughout- I loved it and reminded me of times past.
I'm a thumb piano student. You added magic to the music with that banjo man❤
THIS DOCUMENTARY WAS AWESOME!
I was surprised with she started singing! She's beautiful!
No other instrumentalist comes up with such wonderful and unusual collaborations. Bela Fleck brings joy to world music.

Saw this last night. Despite the ridiculously uncomfortable seats, it had my attention start to finish. Great filim!!!
I still can't believe what a man's god given talent can give him!
I introduced my preacher friend Henry Musana to this song and he started laughing. They are from his tribe and he heard it in Indiana, USA first. Hallelujah! Jesus is the only answer that I know!

I love this video :-)
I liked the music of Uganda best in this wonderful documentary!
One thing I note is that the banjo does derive eventually from the exact kind of harp they show here, if I remember right.
