  • Madagascar produces nearly 80 percent of the world’s commercial vanilla. The price for first-grade extraction of vanilla beans from the island hit $600 per kilogram in 2018. This increase is due to a number of factors, including vanilla bean theft and extreme weather changes. Madagascar’s vanilla industry has been colonized by China and their companies. It’s likely the ordinary Madagascan doesn’t enjoy the benefits.
