- Great writing can take many shapes. It can excel in working the tropes of a particular genre, but it can also subvert these very tropes to achieve something unique and original. Great writing can be complex, poetic, and Shakespearean. But it can also be minimalistic, succinct, something out of Hemingway. Different approaches are called for different goals. There's no right or wrong way but, as with artwork, we know it when we see it. These are the 100 best comic book writers of all time.
Top 20 ranks as follows:
20 - Jack Kirby
19 - John Byrne
18 - Will Eisner
17 - Stan Lee
16 - Art Spiegelman
15 - Osamu Tezuka
14 - Jonathan Hickman
13 - Harvey Pekar
12 - Naoki Urasawa
11 - Greg Rucka
10 - Warren Ellis
9 - Garth Ennis
8 - Brian Azzarello
7 - Ed Brubaker
6 - Mark Millar
5 - Brian K. Vaughan

Great list, I'm hoping I can be in the top 200 comic book writers one day lol. My first comic book comes out this year, seeing all these people who done it before me, many of them i had heard of before and some i really need to go back and read.
You can do it
My top 10:
1. Alan Moore
2. Neil Gaiman
3. Frank Miller
4. Ed Brubaker
5. Grant Morrison
6. Jeff Lemire
7. Warren Ellis
8. Mike Mignola
9. Darwyn Cooke
10. Geoff Johns
honorary mentions: Jonathan Hickman, James Tynion IV, Scott Snyder, Greg Rucka, Jeff Loeb (like Frank Miller I'm ignoring more recent works;), Brian Michael Bendis, Garth Ennis, Marjorie Liu, Tom King
Cant believe Chris Claremont isn’t in Top 20…😮
Can't believe Mark Millar IS in the top 20
Thank you so much for this. I know a couple of them but there is definitely a lot of others that I didn’t know.
Awesome video as always. Much like the artist video, i agree with the vast, vast majority of your top picks, bar a very small handful.
The nice thing about art, there's a lot of room for subjectivity and tastes.
The writers list came much easier. I’ve struggled a lot with the artists, since I can only judge artwork as a layman. It’s also easier to compare Alan Moore and Stan Lee than it is to compare Alex Ross and Wally Wood.
@@comicbelief oh yeah, I can see that, without a doubt. Especially with artists, it comes down to taste a lot more than something with certain structural frameworks like writing.
You also left out Chuck Dixon, Jeph Loeb, Doug Moench, Mike Baron, Ann Nocenti, Mike Mignola
Your top 20 is certainly not mine, which has Shooter, Busiek, Michelinie... :) But no Bill Mantlo, Ann Nocenti, Louise Simonson, Roger McKenzie in your list?
You left out Mike Grell
highlights:
Warlord
Green Arrow
Jon Sable Freelance
My top 10 comic book writers & my favorite comic for each
1. Stan Lee( The Amazing Spider-Man)
2. Frank Miller(The Dark Knight Returns)
3. Garth Ennis(John Constantine Hellblazer)
4. Grant Morrison (Doom Patrol)
5. Alan Moore (Saga Of The Swamp Thing)
6. Walt Siminson((The Mighty Thor)
7. Geoff Johns(Green Lantern)
8. Christopher Priest(Black Panther)
9. Marv Wolfman (The New Teen Titans)
10. John Byrne (Superman)
You put Doom Patrol twice, at 4 and 10
@@marconacher01 it's fixed.
Kelly Sue Deconnick? Tom Taylor? Boy, you are being incredibly generous. If you can put those people in this list then I can put Kohei Horikoshi easily
Man... why don't you do spoken content? You clearly have a lot of knowledge
It has got nothing to do with knowledge. Some would never prefer to do that. They may not like the way they sound or there may be some other reason…
@@Darwaxion there’s pretty much it. I’ve tried a few times. It’s not so much the sound of my voice as I don’t think I have the right personality for it. I pause a lot, I digress a lot. I would start talking about the latest issue of X-Men and end up discussing the use of panel sizes in Little Nemo. 😂
@@comicbeliefno worries,… Ive got adhd and have a hard time not rambling on about shit instead of straight to the point… and sometimes trying so hard not to go off on a tangent, I end up blanking on some simple word
You also left out Chuck Dixon
narwhal narwhal narwhal narwhal and narwhal, because i spit hot fire
No LB Cole from the Golden Age
Nice list but too english/US centric IMHO.
🎉🎉🎉
You left off Dwayne mcduffy………
MIKE MIGNOLA 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Feel the top are overrated
I think it might have to do with one’s age… someone from the 80s will love Moore or Morison , someone older might favor a Thomas or Conway, someone younger maybe prefers someone else. Or maybe I’m completely wrong, of course. 🙃
