When I was in High School, I was discussing this....thing...with one of my teachers. Some guys overheard, and were like "It's bad? I want to watch it!", and we tried to tell them that it wasn't that kind of bad, but that didn't stop them from opening it up on TH-cam. They closed the video twenty minutes in with the most dead eyes I've ever seen on a human being. They weren't prepared.
I saw this when it aired on TV. The channel it was on hyped it real good and as a child at the time, I ate up that hype and I remember excitedly sitting up at night to watch this. Then.. after watching for a while, I realized that something was horribly, horribly wrong with this special, but I was still in denial. I kept telling myself, "No! Frankly, looking at it now, as an adult, that one segment with Bea Arthur, I would love to have seen an entire show made of that. A cantankerous singing bartender working at the Mos Eisley Canteena is a great concept that would have made for an awesome show. Think about it. It's in a spaceport, so you always have interesting characters coming and going and there's always going to be the quirky, silly, regulars. So there would always be interesting stories to tell with a setting like that. They had a potential goldmine with that sketch and they didn't realize it.
There's this TH-camr named HelloGreedo who is a huge StarWars fan and even though he says even this is terrible, he still likes to watch it every year. That level of dedication both fascinates and terrifies me.

This is literally a Star Wars themed, 2 hour episode of the fucking Teletubbies before Teletubbies was even created. I ended up getting stuck watching the new remade Teletubbies and you just made me realize this movie and it share the exact same amount of intelligence, entertainment, and level of creativity. I watched the SWHS back before TFA came out (I was filling up on everything Star Wars). I HAD to take breaks so that I could get drunk enough just so that I could continue viewing it (but not too drunk). It was that hard to watch! Something interesting is that when we were missbehaving in Media class one time, my teacher put this movie on. Everybody within 5 minutes went silent and asked him to turn it off.
Nostalgia Critic also reviewed this movie, complete with suffering similar cancerous aftershocks as a result. The strange thing is, it took an obese crazed lunatic from a refugee camp in Korea, dressed as "Santa Christ", to wipe Walker's memories of this film away from his subconscious.
As a bit of a guilty pleasure, the scene at the cantina was actually my favorite scene in the entire special. The song sung there actually tears me up every time, embarrassingly enough to admit.
The Bea Arthur bartender character was later written into the "Tales from the Cantina" collection of short stories. It's now part of Legends since Disney wiped out the old canon.
They made him into a spinning, flying, absolutely ignorant and moronic religious zealot. He wasn't badass in any sense. His Dooku duel was worse than the Vader/Obi Wan rematch, and his hilariously long and overdrawn duel with Sidious stopped being cool after like five minutes.
The prequels don't make him look like a bad ass at all. In attack of the clones when he is fighting Count Doku he flings around with his lightsaber in his shitty CGI form like a fucking action figure.
***** Dude! He's a fucking Jedi master. What's wrong with CGI? If they had him fight with his lightsaber as a Muppet like he was in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, that would have looked like absolute shit.
But it completely contradicts what he says. In Empire strikes back Yoda says something like "A true Jedi does not need a lightsaber to fight" then he is comically flying around fighting count Doku.
I was a kid when I watched this special. It was mostly for kids and most of the things you point out as stupid and lame was the best ILM could come up with at the time. We didn't have internet, CGI or any other toys to assist movie makers to make high quality films today. Like Star Trek Star Wars was operated by destroyed model kits of ships and other things and acting with a good chemistry among actors and actresses, they did their job without knowing what they were doing and they were unknowns on top of everything. And yet the unknowns became known nationwide and in 1977 Star Wars made it against all odds. Granted, script writers had most certainly sucked back in the 70s. There was an episode on battlestar galactica where starbuck was stranded on a planet, cylons came to try to kill him and starbuck wiped them out and accepted that he would probably die of old age on that planet. Why didn't starbuck get in the ship that the cylons had landed with and take off to go back to the galactica? On Star Trek the wrath of Khan checkoff had recognized Khan. Yet, checkoff wasn't a part of Star Trek before Khan had made his appearance on the original series. And what really got me angry was Star Trek enterprise. Scott bacula was the perfect actor as captain of the first enterprise. But his name should've been captain Robert April and not John Archer. Also according to Star Trek books April's first officer was George Kirk, Jim Kirk's father. I guess this subject is a matter of taste in which I love that Star Wars holiday special not only for the special itself but also all the memories that follows it.

Fun fact: I Was there when this aired way back when, and even as a seven year old I thought it was bad. I remember my brother saying of Lumpy, “poor kid, he has to take out the trash.” I just remember thinking at the end, “nothing happened.” When it FINALLY looked like it was going to get exciting and the stormtrooper is advancing on them in a menacing way, nope, he just falls off the tree! I’m sure the empire wouldn’t check up on him, I remember thinking that I would’ve run down there and gotten his blaster....
This feels like a robot chicken sketch that got turned into a full movie. And there is a reason why most robot chicken sketches are like...30 seconds before the show gets ADHD and moves onto the next thing. That is just enough time to present a funny concept, before you run out of material and realize how inane it actually is.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the Prequels I'm just saying that the Holiday Special is WAY WAY WORSE than any of the prequels. Yeah Episode II was boring, but at least it wasn't... THIS.

I actually liked the prequels. Just taken as their own things, they're adequate. Harmless, even.

I watched the SWHS back before TFA came out (I was filling up on everything Star Wars). I HAD to take breaks so that I could get drunk enough just so that I could continue viewing it (but not too drunk). It was that hard to watch! But, I can say with a sick feeling in my stomach that I watched ALL of the Star Wars Holiday Special!

Nostalgia Critic also reviewed this movie, complete with suffering similar cancerous aftershocks as a result. The strange thing is, it took an obese crazed lunatic from a refugee camp in Korea, dressed as "Santa Christ", to wipe Walker's memories of this film away from his subconscious.
As a bit of a guilty pleasure, the scene at the cantina was actually my favorite scene in the entire special. The song sung there actually tears me up every time, embarrassingly enough to admit.

They made him into a spinning, flying, absolutely ignorant and moronic religious zealot. He wasn't badass in any sense. His Dooku duel was worse than the Vader/Obi Wan rematch, and his hilariously long and overdrawn duel with Sidious stopped being cool after like five minutes.

The prequels don't make him look like a bad ass at all. In attack of the clones when he is fighting Count Doku he flings around with his lightsaber in his shitty CGI form like a fucking action figure.

But it completely contradicts what he says. In Empire strikes back Yoda says something like "A true Jedi does not need a lightsaber to fight" then he is comically flying around fighting count Doku.
I'm fine with them using CGI but not if it looks shit which it did.

I was a kid when I watched this special. It was mostly for kids and most of the things you point out as stupid and lame was the best ILM could come up with at the time. We didn't have internet, CGI or any other toys to assist movie makers to make high quality films today. Like Star Trek Star Wars was operated by destroyed model kits of ships and other things and acting with a good chemistry among actors and actresses, they did their job without knowing what they were doing and they were unknowns on top of everything. And yet the unknowns became known nationwide and in 1977 Star Wars made it against all odds.
Granted, script writers had most certainly sucked back in the 70s. There was an episode on battlestar galactica where starbuck was stranded on a planet, cylons came to try to kill him and starbuck wiped them out and accepted that he would probably die of old age on that planet. Why didn't starbuck get in the ship that the cylons had landed with and take off to go back to the galactica?
On Star Trek the wrath of Khan checkoff had recognized Khan. Yet, checkoff wasn't a part of Star Trek before Khan had made his appearance on the original series. And what really got me angry was Star Trek enterprise. Scott bacula was the perfect actor as captain of the first enterprise. But his name should've been captain Robert April and not John Archer. Also according to Star Trek books April's first officer was George Kirk, Jim Kirk's father.
I guess this subject is a matter of taste in which I love that Star Wars holiday special not only for the special itself but also all the memories that follows it.

I saw it when it first came out in 1978. As a Star Wars kid I was really excited. I quit watching after hearing wookies howl for five minutes. As an adult I found it on DVD (wasn't even sure if it had been real or some fever dream). Still couldn't get past the wookies howling!

The extent of Mark Hamill's injuries from the famous car accident are actually highly exaggerated. He had a fractured nose and some cheek scarring, but even then only his nose required surgery.
