Wow. I've never seen such humongous mutes. I didn't even think brass that low would make a useful sound with a mute. And they were all playing soft, so I couldn't even tell what sound it was making. Well, one learns new things every day. 🙂
It's not that unusual in contests that allows more players than the strict formation. Compositions have become more demanding on the upper register. A 2nd soprano may often be used to help the upper solo cornet parts, so that the principal can focus more on the solo parts. He can also assist the "main" soprano to let him shine on the important stuff. From ancient times is especially demanding.

It's not a soprano cornet, it's the principal cornet, using a Bb cornet as usual 😌
