  • Are you looking for a good starter credit card when moving to the US for work or as a college student? Here are the top 5 beginner cards to help build a solid credit score along with the exact steps to build credit from scratch.
    One of the best ways to start building up your credit is through credit cards. Keep the following in mind when picking a beginner credit card:
    - Annual fees
    - Rewards
    - Customer Service
    Getting a credit card as an international student in college (F1 Visa) or a professional who recently landed (H1B visa) can be quite difficult if you don’t already have a credit history in the US. The best strategy would be to:
    - Start with a secured credit card and use it responsibly
    - Upgrade to an unsecured credit card
    - Look into more premium credit credits once your score reaches 750+

    ABOUT US:
    We want to share our stories and talk about lessons learned while first moving to America, planning our journey to financial literacy, and adopting best practices into our lives.
    As internationals, it was difficult to find relevant resources to understand the aspects of life that were different in a new country. Some of us come from places that treat the path to success as a "competition" and as a result, we shy away from having open conversations about money.
    This channel is a comfortable space to have those discussions and help each other out!

    Additional American Express perk - if you have a credit history in your home country (Canada, the UK, Australia, India or Mexico), you can use it to obtain an Amex card (either through the Amex global transfer program or Nova credit)

    Hi, love your content! I know someone else asked about needing an SSN, I have one but it says valid for work authorization only (which i believe is given to all student visa holders) and when I tried to apply for a credit card with chase, they said it is not possible. Is this usually the case?

    • @FinancewithArjun
      @FinancewithArjun  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much Aashita :) Chase cards can sometimes be more difficult to get approved for when you're just starting out. I would recommend starting with a secured card like the Discover and then moving to Chase later (but don't close the Discover!).

    Lastly, congrats for 1k subs!

    • @FinancewithArjun
      @FinancewithArjun  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Shayan! As long as you have the documents they need, you should be able to get the Deserve when you get to the US. It's an unsecured card, no deposit required.
      Amex Blue Cash Everyday is not a charge card. You might have confused it with another card by Amex, a lot of them have similar names!

      @@FinancewithArjun Hope this one's the card. Actually I did not find any information about credit limit. Also it is mentioned that I have to pay in full or be charged interest, which is typical of a charge card. Anyway, I can be wrong! Thanks for the reply BTW.

    what is an unsecured and a secured card?

    • @FinancewithArjun

      A secured card is backed by an initial deposit made by the cardholder. An unsecured card uses the bank's money straightaway (until you pay the bill off course)
