I get home and see a video of someone I admire for the passion he transmits, the humility, the excellent taste in music when he plays, and the sympathy he has towards his subscribers. What a great way to end a stressful week at work.
Well having never owned a Gibson I can’t even imagine letting one go. I’m not overly enthralled by Gibson guitars, I love the shapes and history and have respect for the company. But epiphones have filled my desire to own something close to a gibson. But I understand the relationship or lack thereof with certain guitars, I have a couple that just sit in their case pretty much untouched since I bought them. But I’m too sentimental to trade or sell them. Anyways, love this channel and the content. I work graveyard shifts and coming home to watch these is quite relaxing and enjoyable! Thanks for sharing your guitars and riffs and keep up the good work!
Gibsons can be great, but like all guitars you have to find the right one. I’ve had 4 Gibsons (Les Paul’s, SG’s, ES335) and the midtown will stay with me forever… my Eastman T59 I sold because o didn’t like the feel, even though it sounded great. Horses for courses!
I think that R4 is a very very special guitar. It sounds better than the Eastman and it has a clarity which is amazing. I hope you will repurchase it someday as the two of you get along quite well
Hi Colin, thanks for all your great videos, I enjoy the content, your humour and your playing style very much. Another thing I really love about your videos is the fantastic production quality: the different cameras (foot cam! great!), the lighting, the inspiring studio environment. This all together creates a relaxing atmosphere which I thoroughly enjoy. Many thanks for your efforts and the great inspiration!
Hi Colin, great to see you doing a comparison between 2 top level guitars, esp. given your history with the R9. They are clearly both beautiful instruments and I think it's great that you have let go of the Gibson to a new home. Sitting here in HK what I do respect most about all this this is that at no point did you bring the "USA vs China' made thing. Before I went pro I worked in the biggest music shop in Wellington, NZ in the early 70s, when I was 18 / 19 and I learnt a lot about guitars - I was a star salesman. My boss used to take me out the Gibson import agent to get first look at what came in and I would pick the best for the shop and tell the boss of the import company which ones to send back to America (one bass had a banana neck that was hilarious). We are guitar players and, despite politics and/or prejudice, IMHO it comes down to the instrument. I have lived in HK for 40 years and worked with musicians throughout Asia and met people who make instruments - they just love doing what they do no matter of the politics of the country. We benefit from their love of music and craft. All that said - I think it's cool that you let go of the Gibson and, personally, as a guy who used to have to set up guitars in the shop, I do applaud Eastman for doing the Tailpiece + Bridge thing - I am not a fan of single wraparound tailpiece / bridge combos because intonation can be a problem. Hope this not contraversial (delete if so). Enjoy the Eastman - I'm hoping I can try a few out in the next few weeks!
I have almost pulled a trigger on an Eastman antique varnish a couple of weeks ago, and you were a big influence for that decision, Colin! :) But then I thought about it once more: will I still want my dream Gibson R8 afterwards? Absolutely! Probably not the next week or month, but still.. And with the current price for a varnish series being 2550 Euros in Germany I am already half way there. As someone has well put it in a different video: "I always thought it was too expensive to pay 5000$ for a guitar, so I'd spent a 15 000$ on cheaper guitars over the last decade instead of buying THE one." So I've put my money in an envelope and I think I know what I'll get me for Christmas hehe. I guess at these price points - above 2 grand - it's not about playability or quality anymore - it's about fulfilling your dreams.
I have a nice r8. It was supposed to be a plain top but has nice flaming in it. I got lucky with that because I ordered it sight unseen. I was a little bummed about how thick the neck was and wondered if I should have gone with an r9 instead for another grand or so but now I’m used to it and love it immensely! I try not to be a guitar snob, and these days I mostly buy cheap guitars and fix them up but sometimes nothing compares to the real deal. Good luck on getting yours when you get around to it. You won’t be disappointed. In the meantime my next nice guitar is going to be an Eastman 335 style. At this point in life I’m done spending Gibson level money on stuff.
@@Winstonrodney6989 Yes - I love my 58 thick neck! For the 335 take a look at the Maybach, too! I´m lucky enough to own a Gibson ES 335 Dot from 1986 - a dream of a guitar! Have fun!
I have personally sold all my gibsons and still own 2 eastman guitars. They felt and sounded better in every way. I also own a fancy collings I30lc with 2 p90s, spent years saving for a collings. The eastman quality and feel is up there with that I30lc. The collings has something special though :)
Col, you are a bloody treasure. And for those that read comments, if you’re not on his ‘private’ channel you should be…the value added from his input and that of we forum members is terrific…like being in a gang, as Joe Strummer would say. Cheers mate, you’ve made a good decision.
Happy St Paddies everyone. I am sitting here, fetched my SSB56 that weighs 8 pounds 5.7 oz and strumming happily along. Guitars are such a lovely reminder that life is good and prosperous, bringing along a great soundtrack. Reminders that life can be enjoyed with some introspection without OCD. Sláinte!
I think the Eastman has the looks. Loving that colour. It’s so easy to have regrets, especially when hearing things side by side. The Eastman sounds different definitely but I can hear that it has more sustain. I think that you will love that Eastman once the Gibson has gone. I think it sounds great. I’ve got 3 strats that I’m forever comparing. I have got into the habit of putting guitars away, as it’s too distracting having them out together. No two guitars sound the same, they react differently to pedals and eq and need to be approached differently in terms of where you have the volume and tone pots positioned. That Eastman is one seriously nice guitar so stop whinging 😂
Stoked I saved this to enjoy. I'll start this comment by saying this felt like a conversation which I've come to realise is why I love your content so much Colin, yes we chat in the forums as I'm member of the Guitaristas TV channel but watching the videos always feels like to me as if we are having a video chat and I greatly appreciate that experience. So thank you. I will preface this by stating I am a Gibson stargazer. I love looking at Gibson guitars but I now equally love looking at Eastman guitars I've just discovered That Eastman made a SB59 limited black with Seymour Duncan pearly gate pick ups so I've gone from perving on a Gibson classic to perving on the Eastman and being honest I prefer playing Eastman guitars. Regarding your R4 I think your comment was telling about the headstock. It wasn't about the brand for you anymore it was about the feel and all of us on our journeys come to that enlightenment I hope. Cheers again mate, see you next week. G
Another great video! There's something for everyone out there that's for sure. Eastman SB59 would be my holy grail guitar, don't care much about Gibson. I have my other holy grail which is a yamaha revstar. Best time in history to be a guitar player i think, we are spoilt for choice
In all my years, I've never seen an R4 in person. However, I've had my Eastman SB56 for 3 years, and I play it every day still. Best fat neck, Best P90s, and light, resonant, quality treated wood. It does Bloomfield, Freddie King, and Sean Costello perfectly. I only wish it had a pickgaurd, fret nibs, and old growth mahogany like a Gibson, but I'll never part with it. It's become my sound. Hope you experienced some of what I did. Nice channel, your passion for fine instruments shows! MJ
The Eman is top shelf, it doesn't have to play or sound better to be amazing. I thought it was well matched. And dare I say..easier on the eyes. The real question is how it feels? Cuz it sounds as good. If it feels great, no regrets...light years more value..
Both beautiful high end guitars and for me the Gibson just nicks it, the colour and obviously it’s heritage. The Eastman looks like it has an ebony fret board. If the Gibson had that it would in my opinion look amazing. Great video as always Colin, thank you and enjoy the weekend! 🤘
G'Day Colin... Yes... The Eastman SB56 is a "Keeper"... Made up my mind in your "Playout-Exit"... and... You are no slouch in your playing abilities ! Wish I was as good ! If you ever get the chance to play a... Stagg L400-TS ... (LP) do so... The pick-ups are Stagg Brand (?) and I am not jealous of anyone else, with my own... (Made in Belgium)... When I bought it the third fret was 'sharp'... a quick file down fixed that and the "Not-For-Sale" sign is up ! I play through a 'Blues Junior'... Cheers 🤠
You did the right thing 100%. I'm with Uncle Larry when it comes to gear. Enjoy it. Appreciate it. Sell it on. I've only ever regretted selling one amplifier in 50 years. I only have one guitar that is "forever". Everything else comes and goes. I think its honestly healthy to move things on down the line and look for the next new insight or inspiration. I honestly believe that life is about experiencing things not accumulating stuff. When you sigh your last breath, you won't regret the money you "wasted" on new experiences, only the experiences you never got to have..
Hearing the Eastman unplugged told me everything. Smoother, more rich, more sustain. The tone knob and volume knob rolled in some spectacular tones plugged in.
You're a legend, Colin. Found your channel a while back and have been binging the videos since. Went into a local store today and tried an Eastman SB59/v which blew me away... glad to see it seems to have done the same for you too (as well as the rest of their line). Think I might be adding one to the collection soon... damn you sir! :D thanks, mate!
For me, if i already had the r4 i would not swap that for the Eastman as the difference for me was minimal. If i did not own either i would go for the Eastman i think they deserve a chance as the quality/price ratio is better. IMO
This is a rational reply. Unless you need the money holding onto an actual Gibson reissue makes more sense. That said I see a couple Eastmans in my future. And why not when I can get two for the price of a Gibson and have some change left over.
@@Dan-gn2xo can’t wait to finally get to try one myself. Got to get my money situation sorted first though. Two big holes in my collection are a semi hollow and something with p-90’s
You may not have recognized it yet, but it's clear to me having binged a lot of your videos together in a short period of time: you're no longer a Gibson guy; you are now officially an "Eastman guy." And with good reason--their awesome instruments!
Two beautiful guitars. Personally, I much prefer the warmth of the rosewood fretboard. The sound difference is irrelevant, because they both sound fantastic, just a little different. Thanks for the invite to ride along with you.
Nice one Colin, difficult decision but the right one I think, you already have your holy grail guitar and let's face it the Eastman sounds just as good as the R4, to my ears anyway...
Wow that R4 was way better unplugged. Edit, after listening to the sound demo the Gibson just has a beautiful tone. I absolutely love Lollar pickups but there’s just something in that R4 sound I can’t put my finger on.
A while ago, I missed the sale of an R4 by a hair... Came just a bit too late. Found a Gene Baker B3 SL Wood instead: tunomatic, Lollar '50s wind, beautiful resonant and light. I have no regrets and haven't looked back. As I can hear, you're getting inspired by the Eastman as well. You will probably make the buyer of your R4 a happy one and I don't think you'll regret it. Enjoy ! Cheers
Hey Colin. Really enjoy all your informative and in depth demos and shoot outs, thank you for taking the time. This video brought out the therapist in me (I am not a therapist!). Here is what I heard you say: 1) I love Les Pauls but I don't enjoy playing Les Pauls. 2) The Gibson sounds and feels better than the Eastman. 3) I want to love the Eastman but I know I will end up selling it. My opinion was that the Gibson was better in every respect. It has the right shape and name so it looks cooler but also sounds and feels better. Yours is also very lightweight and that makes it a special one in most players' eyes. However, please let it go and don't try to replicate a guitar you hardly played anyway. You won't miss something you never used (unless it is for investment purposes). The Eastman was essential to understand your Les Paul journey but not a keeper. Life is short. On to the Teles...
i think the more you play the eastman the more you will like it, like you said its brand new so needs playing in, plus i'm glad you got a good deal on it, i've never seen them at £1999 before, usually around the £1700 price range, so well done on that,
I watched this twice because i enjoyed it so much. You have put your money where your mouth is here and it was obviously a tough call-the right one though I think on balance. For me your playing is way more fluid on the Eastman and im sure you will use it more than the R4 (and never have to replace the tuners). Well done -great vid-thanks
I prefer the Gibson, it sounded more open and dynamic to me than the Eastman, not even close, but I'm listening to it through TH-cam, I'm not in the room. soooo,. I enjoy your videos very much, you're more of a working mans' guitarist I think, and I like that! Your videos aren't overproduced like so many are these days, yours are raw, informative, funny, very entertaining, and relatable! I just want to mention to you that DC Resistance is not a very good way to measure a pickups output, while it might be a factor it is a small one, and lots of folks make this mistake. The things that really determine the output of a pickup are,... number of winds, magnet material and strength, and type of wire material. Those are the main factors in pickup output. Using Dimarzio just as a reference, (because they use a number to rate the output of their pickups). The higher the number the hotter the pickup, for instance,... .... A Dimarzio AT-1 is a medium output pickup, (320), and it's DC resistance is, 16.50k,... on the other hand a Dimarzio Super Distortion is a high output pickup, (425), and it's DC resistance is, 13.68. The difference between the nitro finishes is just the number of coats used I believe. I don't know how many coats either guitar has, but I'm betting the Gibson has a lot more than the Eastman has.
Another great video, I was in Forsyth’s in Manchester a couple of weeks back, I actually went in to try some Eastmans after watching your reviews of them! Forsyth’s is a great shop with a really good selection of guitars - definitely worth a visit if anyone is in Manchester 👍
I bought a Vox AC15 from them years ago. One of the last music stores in Manchester. Can't believe they've all virtually gone. Any Mancs on here remember A1 Music on Oxford Road? Great review, Colin.
It's Friday, it's Colin, it's the best yt show around. I am immune to Les Paul "gas" no matter the brand. The shape does not push my "magic" button. That said if you read this and you are single cutaway/LP style enjoyer I hope you have found your "the one", it's the worst when you finally figure out what it is you look for and you set out to look for it and you can't seem to find it. Add Gibson pricing to that search... Just Oof... I do not envy anyone going through that. Peace and have a fabulous weekend
Amazing how your playing sounds so much better on the Gibbo mate... I find that with different guitars - they seem to give out more than you put in. Been trying to bond with an Epi 335 for a year but it's just not happening and it's going... Have a great weekend.
Epic play-out jam (and now I want one of those SB56/N-GDs). Thank goodness I ran across this, otherwise there would have been pitchforks and torches this week!
As of late autumn last year, mine is a Gibsonless household. Can't say I regret anything. So many great guitars out there, and we can't own them all. Great stuff, as always! Cheers! 🎶
Colin. I don't know where to start. Firstly, great video mate. Everything about it was top notch. Told a story and the ending felt a bit sad ....... like saying goodbye to someone you'll never see again, and the playing at the end summed it up beautifully. I like the idea of Eastman guitars and I'm currently thinking of getting a hollow body with p90's and a bigsby, like a Casino. Anyway, from the souunds in the vid I prefer the Gibson. I don't dislike the Eastman but for what I like the Gibson sounds more unique, maybe because its brighter. It probably is the lightness of the wood along with the wrapover bridge/ tailpiece. Your playing sounded inspired on the outro, both on the Gibson and the Eastman. I think moving on from the Gibson with the idea of buying more guitars to review for the channel makes perfect sense so fair play mate!
Love your format, thank you. In the outro, I thought the Eastman sounded spectacular in the middle and neck positions, well done. The Gibson sounded nice in every position.
Some of a guitar's delight is in its imperfect nature often times. The Gibson 54 set-up maybe personified that, but the Eastman is very worthy. I'm watching your super outro playing as I type.
I forgot what I was talking about…….I think that’s why I watch? Your playing on the end of the video with the Eastman was your most fluid yet, so it must be a keeper. I was going to say something about going for a pint or something but I’ve forgotten……
Hi Colon, somebody needs a beer. I own the Eastman antique varnish, love it. Have owned Gibson Les Paul Custom and Standard. Eastman does not disappoint. If money were not an issue though...
I love my Gibson with a wraptail bridge and the intonation is perfect and I don't think i will ever sell it it's my favorite guitar because it plays so easy and sounds so good.
I just walked in with a new Gibson R9…. $7k which is insane. But…. This really was a stunner in looks, tone and playability. The messed up thing is that I tried 7-8 other Gibsons to find this one. The inconsistencies between them were quite eye opening. A few of them were a bit …. meh! Still $6-7k though. Here’s the kicker; the store had four Eastmans. Everyo 48:42 ne of them was a stunner and I think I would have taken anyone of them over the other Gibsons. Impeccable finish, beautifully set up and playing and sounded great. But damn, when Gibson get one right they are just incredible. Am I mad??
Bought a '71 SG new and it had both a nylon nut and nylon saddles on the bridge. I replaced the bridge with a Schaller with stainless steel saddles and the difference was spectacular.
It's not a fab Friday unless there's a Guitaristas video! Great stuff Colin, really enjoy your channel and you can see the work that goes into it 👍 But please cover up that cherry red SG on the wall over your left shoulder.. it keeps looking at me! 😍
When I chose a guitar it because of the feel and comfort. Sound is important but that can often remedied if there are issues but feel and comfort not so easily. I have 4 Gibson LPs there is something about the feel to them that I haven't found in any other guitars I own US and Mexican fender Strats s& Teles and they are lovely a Gretch and a Peavey Tracer, a old 1970s Nippon made Tele copy and a 2010 squire affinity strat as well but again there is something about the feel and cut shall see say about the Gibson LP that just feels like home. I have a number a Fender basses and Yamaha and others basses but that another story. Thanks for the clip hopefully you wont miss the Gibson to much. Cheers.
Great Video Colin I have trouble selling any guitar I own never mind a Gibson R8. You will enjoy the Eastman but that R8 will always be calling you back.
I'm after the Eastman SC55/v... everywhere in Australia is sold out!! The goldtop is gonna sound great once she's played in, it'll open up... it already sings!
Hi Colin, I completely understand your dilemma, I've been through the same in the past, but if it's for a good cause... Congratulations on your sincerity!!! 👏👏👏👏
Hi Colin...no doubt Eastman Is a great guitar but no doubt you already know l can't be happy seeing you gave away all your Les Pauls now...certainly the One l loved much was your R8...l can't understand how you can do that but l always have to consider you're an SG man🤣🤣🤣...you always offer us something interesting and well done, and well played...thanks a lot...Keep on rocking and Cheers from Italy,Colin...as always 👍👍👍🥂🍾🎸🎸🎸🤣
Holy smoke isn't your content absolutely stellar? I've spent yesterday afternoon listening to your episodes on these japanese Les Pauls while I was making sushi (🍣 lol) as I've been considering getting one myself instead of the "real thing" which would save me a pretty penny... I've put my eyes on a stunning looking Tokai ULS132GT (Gold Top + P90s) and an equally beautiful 1977 Greco EG500 with a cherry Burst flamed maple top (both made in Japan) and I was wondering your opinion about those... I also wanted to thank you for this content you make, I absolutely love the time you put into these hour long videos and the fact that you take your time, please never change! Might not be much but I just subbed btw ❤ (If we were neighbours I'd totally let you review my 1965 Galanti Grand Prix and 1961 Eko 400 V2 in Gold Metal Flake finish, the spaghetti western machine! 😂)
The great thing about being subscribed here and a member on your VHX channel is getting to hear you play and talk guitars twice a week. 😊 The R-4 is the stuff legends are made of, it’s perfection. I understand your thoughts on passing it on. I’m going through similar thoughts with several of my motorcycles. I’ve decided to let two, maybe three of them go and maybe snatch up a Royal Enfield for a good price. The Eastman sounds awesome, just a bit different than the R-4. In your hands the Eastman will become it’s own legend. Have an awesome time playing the SB56, Ill look forward to hearing you play it in future videos! Steve, you’ve got a legendary guitar coming your way!
@@theguitaristas I am interested in the Super Meteor 650. I’ve seen some early reviews from UK content creators and it is impressive. I like the quality materials used in the bike. The style is spot on as well. The Classic 350 has piqued my interest for a while but the smaller size engine is prohibitive in my area as I I need to use freeways for pretty good distance to get to the more scenic enjoyable roads.
I think that your head says you made the right choice, but your heart says that you didn't! I like them both, and agree with your decision from a business standpoint for freeing up $$ for channel. That said, I think you'll end up with another Gibson someday. Rock on, sir!
Well as one who previously wondered out loud to you in your SB59/v video if the SB56 vs R4 would make an interesting comparison, I think it was a success. Since then I bought a SB56 instead of a SB 59/v and personally prefer the Eastman for it’s bang for the buck performance compared to the R4. To each his own. Great video once again Colin. Thank you. You are a gem!!
My R8 brings out my best playing, but it’s hard to quantify why…as you alluded to Colin, just something about it. It also happens to be 8.3 Lbs. I’m hearing more of the prototypical Gibson upper mids with the R4, the Eastman sounds a bit more low mids focused to me. They both sound great, but I don’t know that one is a substitute for the other. Good stuff, thanks Colin! ✌️
You know my choice already, but I agree with everything you said today. I'm glad this is your pickle and not mine. My ear says the Gibby makes your play style sound like an artist because all those between the lines noises that come out and expose the real core of your output... the Easty sounds very nice especially sometimes...like when you really dig in... however the compressed sort of tone squishes the nuances it seems and that would lend to hearing your licks in a different light.... like competitive or open to criticism rather than enjoying an artist.
You definitely open up on these two guitars. The Gibson does have a very slight “edge” for sound but the Eastman is a brand new instrument that hasn’t had any play or aging on it.. I always feel that has a bit to do with it. That Eastman is no slouch and I think given some playing time and a little bit of aging so to speak it will be a phenomenal (already is) instrument. Excellent video!
Hi Colin, great review! I think you were able to send the message that both guitars are great. We all would buy and keep as many guitars as possible if there we’re not any issues associated in doing that. Gibsons are expensive and not perfect, but they sound great, feel great and look amazing. I had a chance to play an Eastman T486 at a shop and was so impressed with its quality. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Great guitars! I'm trying to decide between the Tokai and the Eastman for a gold top with P-90s. For what it's worth, you could absolutely reverse wrap the bridge on the Eastman and see if it makes a difference in tone/sustain. Great film! Cheers.
Both brands make great guitars and these two were both great examples of what each company is capable of... in this video, for me, it came down to the pickups... the Gibson pickups presented each notes fundamental with greater clarity and had all that swirling harmonic content around the fundamental... Lollar makes great pickups, but not every set is great... and that happens to any pup builder from time to time... this particular set fell short for me... each notes fundamental got lost as the notes were just too gritty sounding, no swirling harmonics ... the pickups sway this for me, the win goes to the Gibson this time... :-) Great content Colin... as always, well done !!
I have a room full of guitars that I SHOULD sell and or part with. I just keep finding reasons to keep them. Why is it so hard to let them go? But i will say this, when I walk in that room and see them looking back at me, i have a smile ear to ear.
As almost always. I like them both. I do believe I'd have zero problems owning either one really. Eastman continues to hit home runs. Thanks Colin. Happy shopping. Cheers.
Great video you can’t beat Eastman for the price. They’re craftsmanship is top notch and they use the best components. I wanted a good p90 guitar so I played a sb54v-ltd and fell in love like I tend to do with Eastman’s. It is as good or better than my Gibson’s. The Duncan custom shop staple and p90 pickups are unique, versatile, and sound amazing. I’m happy I got one because they didn’t make very many. It always surprises me how many people don’t realize how good these guitars truly are.
Gibson's marketing strategy is not to sell the steak but to sell the sizzle. Quality control issues persist. But there's a magic to owning and playing a Gibson. The brand makes most musicians think their heirs to a legacy. As an owner of an Eastman and a Gibson, I can state unequivocally, that Eastman's quality control is second to none. A buyer would have to look to a Murphy Lab Custom Shop to find something of similar quality for thousands of dollars/euros/pounds more.
Both lovely guitars. I prefer the look of the Eastman over the Gibson, and sound wise the Gibson probably pips the Eastman, but that might just be the Eastman needing a bit of settling…..Or I’m not blind to the headstock as much as I like to think I am! 😊 thanks Colin.
I can’t stand the “Fat” lower bout of the Eastmans, no matter how good it’s supposed to be…Sorry!🤷🏻♂️ To me it looks like someone gave a description of a Les Paul to the CNC programmer over the phone!
As I said in your SB59/v video, I have the limited edition Antique Varnish SB56 (#2 of 40) that weighs in at 8 lb 2 oz. It's a ridiculously good guitar that I never plan to part with. I also have a T386 Eastman 335alike, which is great, but is getting a pickup swap soon (Monty's PAFs). Great video, as always.
They both sound great, maybe even the Eastman edges it but that R4, I think its half the Gibson logo and half the tailpiece, but it just has this amazing 50's Sun Records vibe, like a real Rock and Roll Guitar. You'll regret it sure, but I'm sure the money will pay for something that you would have regretted not buying in the future. And it's too perfect anyway, like you said you will always just come round again to thinking about selling it, and the cash it represents. It needs to either be sold or it wants a neck break, a good repair and a few years of abuse to make it something you feel you can't let go of. great video, and that Eastman is beautiful. I don't have a p90 guitar, but one day I'm going to build a non-reverse Firebird from scratch- a little dream of mine (number two on my list after a parts built jazzmaster.
Hey Colin. The differences are so miniscule that even if I had a preference of one over the other, it would not matter which one I was playing as far as the sound coming through the amp. I think a lot of people overlook the amplifier and effects. If you have a really good quality amp and effects, the more expensive guitar's natural sound vs another lesser expensive guitar's natural sound are usually lost in the mix. Enjoy your new guitar, both of you!
Colin that sB56 is glorious. Congrats! Far as values are concerned for folks in here it's 2 different conversations comparing standard run Gibsons to Eastman and custom shop Gibsons to Eastman, 2 very different prospects. In my experience of selling plenty of Gibsons your money in the current market is ALOT safer with Eastman. trust me my money has been in my mouth plenty of times on this. Far as future values of a custom shop gibson vs Eastman I can't really comment. Now thats the values arguments out the way lol. To me the SB56 here is far more attractive then the Gibbo, Everything about it is just pure class with grade A hardware to boot. If you're comparing the value for money for the end user here the SB56 has to win by a country mile! A custom shop gibson though, IS THE thing. It is GIBSON and even gibson standards are really copies and versions of their custom shop counterparts. So to own a custom shop gibson is a real desire of mine still despite choosing to own and keep my Eastmans after plenty of chances to keep a gibson instead.
I love Eastmans mate. I have two and one I own is the SB59 Goldtop with the humbuckers and I will never sell it. I hope you don’t regret selling the Gibbo too much, but you have had fun with it and as you say there is a lot of money wrapped up in that guitar. I would love to see you check out Gordon Smith guitars one day, I have recently bought a custom built T Style to my own design and spec, wonderful instrument. Keep ‘em coming Col…. The channel is golden.
I dunno what it is. The R4 has the mojo. There lives a spirit in it. Again audible in your playing. The eastman is an incredible guitar but it lacks just that. U know i'd never sell this R4 but i understand ur reasoning.
If you are not playing it what is the point of having it. I think you are making the right decision.Besides that Eastman is a goergeous guitar! Nice video as always : )
That R4 definitely has some MOJO. I wouldn't have been able to give it up but like you said the channel is a business and the show must go on. If you weren't playing it much I respect your choice to pass it on I know it wasn't easy. See you next Friday!
Thanks for looking under the pups on the Eastman. I have that same one. F$%%#kin' love it. Great sustain The Gibson grolls like nothing else. It's unique even though it just a single cut. The Eastman holds close to the Gibson. It has a different, awesome tone.
I got very lucky! My Gibson Les Paul Standard 50's with P90's weighs in at 8.2 lbs. My Classic is almost 10 lbs. I doubt I'll ever sell the Standard because I don't think I'd ever find another that light.
I get home and see a video of someone I admire for the passion he transmits, the humility, the excellent taste in music when he plays, and the sympathy he has towards his subscribers. What a great way to end a stressful week at work.

My fav channel too.
This and That Pedal Show are the only channels I press the like button before I even watch the video…….🎸
Cheers James! 😊🙏
We are definitely kindred spirits i have 3 les Paul’s i just cant sell
Not every guitar needs to be kept.or object for that matter. It feels good to let stuff go knowing other stuff comes. Instead of pack ratting it all
Gibsons can be great, but like all guitars you have to find the right one. I’ve had 4 Gibsons (Les Paul’s, SG’s, ES335) and the midtown will stay with me forever… my Eastman T59 I sold because o didn’t like the feel, even though it sounded great. Horses for courses!
I can’t sell my Les Paul I waited to long to get it
I think that R4 is a very very special guitar. It sounds better than the Eastman and it has a clarity which is amazing. I hope you will repurchase it someday as the two of you get along quite well
Hi Colin,
thanks for all your great videos, I enjoy the content, your humour and your playing style very much.
Another thing I really love about your videos is the fantastic production quality:
the different cameras (foot cam! great!), the lighting, the inspiring studio environment.
This all together creates a relaxing atmosphere which I thoroughly enjoy.
Many thanks for your efforts and the great inspiration!
⭐️Thanks Eike that’s really appreciated 😊🙏 I enjoy messing around with guitars and making films so am living the dream! 😆👍👍
Next up: Peerless.
Agree!
Have fun!
@@chrisforever1255 thanks, I’ll check it out.
Can’t go wrong with a Eastman or Maybach but getting Maybach’s in the states is a bit harder. But I love my Eastman
I have personally sold all my gibsons and still own 2 eastman guitars. They felt and sounded better in every way. I also own a fancy collings I30lc with 2 p90s, spent years saving for a collings. The eastman quality and feel is up there with that I30lc. The collings has something special though :)
There's something so very special about owning a well made top-of-line guitar.
Cheers Glenn! 😎👍
MJ
Just picked up the SB56 and love it. A well made instrument that can more than hold its own to the American giants.
The Eman is top shelf, it doesn't have to play or sound better to be amazing. I thought it was well matched. And dare I say..easier on the eyes. The real question is how it feels? Cuz it sounds as good. If it feels great, no regrets...light years more value..
"Our guitar journey." Love that, Col. That's how I feel too.
Cheers!
Cheers 🤠
Cheers man! 😁👍
😎👍👍
You are so great at what you do! I really enjoy your videos so much!! Much love from Cali
Always look forward to Friday to see what Colin’s going to do next. Thanks Colin!
You're an excellent salesman for Eastman guitars
In my experience they deserve shouting about 👍
Lovely guitars. Considering an Eastman T486 with phat cats as the Gibson es-330 is very elusive!
Cheers man glad you found us! 😁👍
I have 3 Eastman guitars. I also have a bunch of Gibsons. The eastmans are just better. Sorry Gibson you need to step up your game.
Here is what I heard you say:
1) I love Les Pauls but I don't enjoy playing Les Pauls.
Thanks I think that has helped!… please send me your bill to Gibson Brands inc, Nashville, TN 🤣👍
i think the more you play the eastman the more you will like it, like you said its brand new so needs playing in, plus i'm glad you got a good deal on it, i've never seen them at £1999 before, usually around the £1700 price range, so well done on that,
I watched this twice because i enjoyed it so much.
You have put your money where your mouth is here and it was obviously a tough call-the right one though I think on balance.
For me your playing is way more fluid on the Eastman and im sure you will use it more than the R4 (and never have to replace the tuners).
Well done -great vid-thanks
The Eastman sounded beautiful. I think I like it more than the Gibson R4.
Hi Colin, That neck pick up on the Eastman.................Wow............
Obviously both stellar guitars but that Eastman just does it for me. Another great video as usual mate!!! 👍
I have had that exact Eastman for months now-and it's a brilliant guitar. Great playing btw!

Might not be much but I just subbed btw ❤

Cheers man thanks for the kind words and sub! 😁👍 that Tokai sounds great and a 77 Greco will be a thing of beauty!! 🙌
The great thing about being subscribed here and a member on your VHX channel is getting to hear you play and talk guitars twice a week. 😊
The R-4 is the stuff legends are made of, it’s perfection.
Cheers Pinkie, that's interesting about the bikes... are you looking at the new RE Super Meteor 650 by any chance??

An addendum. I just received an Eastman SB59/v (my second, the first I very regrettably sold). Looking at the SB55/v next☺️.
The P90's would be great for playing Stones songs!
Great review again, thanks Colin. I had a Les Paul classic goldtop with P90s which I regret letting go as I do with all my past guitars
Hey man! You are what makes your, 't.v channel' so good! Good luck and hope you enjoy that beautiful Eastman.
Cheers that's appreciated! 😎🙏
The green comes from copper flakes in the paint that was used back then. Oxidation turns it green with time
I have a room full of guitars that I SHOULD sell and or part with.
Cheers.
Late to the party- great vid. You made the right choice: but this R4 will be back!
For me, any LP or LP Style guitar (PRS notwithstanding) doesn’t look quite right without a pickguard.
Love the video man! Looking forward to hearing how you feel about the Eastman as time goes by. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Never be a prisoner past decisions,
They are just a lesson, not a life sentence. Both those guitars sound great to me.
I got a Vintage V100 goldie with Wilkinson P90's. Sounds and feels nice. And weighs a ton with a B5 Bigsby!
It always surprises me how many people don’t realize how good these guitars truly are.
yeah that sb54... 😛 If you want to sell it you know where I am!!
@@theguitaristas Lol it’s very unlikely that I’ll ever want to sell it but if I ever do you’ll be the first to know. Keep up the good work!
Aloha and Mahalo Colin! The stop tail piece is part of the looked for feature that's on the 54. Eastman is always nice. The cutaway is kind of big.
I can’t stand the “Fat” lower bout of the Eastmans, no matter how good it’s supposed to be…Sorry!🤷🏻♂️
To me it looks like someone gave a description of a Les Paul to the CNC programmer over the phone!
Very interesting and informative review, The Eastman guitar looks to be a very well made piece. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
You do a heck of a job with these videos, love watching them and always look forward to seeing more.
Thanks Kris that’s appreciated! 😁🙏
Very nice playing man whish you every success with your channel
Thanks Rod that's appreciated!
Cheers Richard... a Gordon Smith is definitely in the future 😎👍
Great sustain
The Gibson grolls like nothing else.
Good video Colin Being a Gibson person, I’d keep the Gibson But it’s your choice obviously
Really enjoy the videos. If I ever get across the pond, the first pint is on me!
Cheers John! 😁👍
