Chinees is steeds geliefder.

Well, there used to be a country called "the Spanish Netherlands", which is nowadays known as "Belgium" (+ Luxembourg and some small bits of the surrounding larger countries of France, Germany and the modern day Netherlands).
As the Sinterklaas tradition is very old, I would guess, that his assistant Zwarte Piet (= "Black Pete", who is basically the Dutch version of Krampus) took the kids to Belgium (aka the nearest "Spain" seen from the Netherlands), which is, of course, a horrible thing to do.
Despite being a lovely country with wonderful people, Belgium's capital Brussels also serves as EU headquarter, i.e. the slimy ganglion of the wretched cesspool of corruption, neo-communism and outright insanity.
They seriously DID police the curvature of cucumbers for several years, because (most) EU minions are overpaid, braindead, bored p*rvs, who haven't lifted a single finger in all their lives and would take money from Satan himself.
Even though the EU is a relatively recent construct, its demonic nature must have radiated backwards through time and made the Spanish Netherlands an utterly unattractive place.

In the Netherlands we have a kind of funny dark comedy and it was at one time very popular in songs. The song she's talking about is "De Gezusters Kamarazov" (The Sisters Karamazov), a play on the book by Dostojewski, by Drs. P. Another example is "Dodenrit" (Death Ride), by the same singer. It's about a Russian family on their way to Omsk, but they get chased by wolves, so they have to throw their children off the troika to keep the wolves away. They start with the least talented one, but the wolves keep coming back, so they have to keep throwing their children off. Drs. P was inspired by Louis Davids, who sang songs about all day themes, but with funny dark undertones. There's one example named "De Begrafenis van Ome Manus" (The Burial of Uncle Manus). In this song a rich man has died, but he has many descendants who start to kill each other over the heritage. Another example is "Weekend in Scheveningen", where the chorus is about happy like "Yeah, we're going to the beach in Scheveningen. The sky is blue, the sea is warm in Scheveningen!", but in the verses the family irritate each other and they start beating each other to death. It may be strange to some people, but I think it's funny as hell.

It's confusing for americans when we talk about 'Sinterklaas'. They think we're talking about 'Santa Claus' but that is not true. 'Sinterklaas' is a mythical man who supposedly lives in Spain and who brings presents and candy for children on december 6th (in Belgium) and september 5th (in Holland). He has multiple assistants who are called 'zwarte piet'. So 'Piet' is a Dutch name, and 'zwarte' means black. So he's 'zwarte piet' because he crawls through chimneys to deliver the toys and candy in childrens homes and that's why he's black. 'Sinterklaas' is actually based on an ancient Germanic feast. 'Santa Claus' is called 'Kerstman' in Dutch and there's no difference between the american and Dutch/Belgian 'Kerstman'. He brings presents on Christmas.

today's Turkey. When his parents died and left him with a lot of money, which he did a lot of good with. He moved in with his uncle an became a priest, eventually a bishop and after he died a Saint.
In the legends he is a benefactor to children from praying them back alive, saving them from a butcher how made meat from them
Most famous is the poor man with 3 daughter and no dowery and would most likely stay single the rest of their live and being assumed to be prostiutes. To save them humiliation Dear O'l Nik would secretly trew in 1 purse money trough the window when a daughter became of aged to be married. When the 3 daughter was going to be the father wanted to know how the kind man was. Nik went on the roof and threw the purse trough the chimney and ended up falling in a stocking hanging there to dry.
      Santa little helpers?
those where thieve how where that Nikolaos try to "save"
      and the Gift?
Those where the stolen goods returning to the rightfull owners or those in need.
(Well that is a way to long responds and but it was fun to look it up again. Special with the whole debate here in Holland coming up.)

+Mario X. The true story is very different. Some key factors: Santa Claus is based on an Irish myth and Sinterklaas. The "zwarte pieten" were not in fact his helpers but his slaves (mind you the myth originates in the 1500's when slaves were one of the primary sources of health for the then called Dutch Republic. These slaves were black and hence the colour reference, nothing to do with chimneys, that's just some fantasy we tell the kids. It is also not based upon a Germanic feast, it is based on Saint Nicholas or Nikolaos of Myra. There are also tiny differences in the Christmas version (Santa), but those quickly diverge to a discussion about semantics so I won't go in to that here.

As a person who's lived in The Netherlands her whole life, the pronounce of every dutch words they say is absolutely to die for. I could not stop laughing and I so appreciate Christina for trying to speak Dutch. Because it is hard. It is a difficult language. If I would marry an American man or a man from any other foreign country and we decide to live there and not in The Netherlands. Are you kidding me. It's kind of rude that she doesn't even want to try and speak Dutch or try to understand the culture. Her kids will miss a beautiful opportunity to be bilingual. I know I'm kind of biased because I'm Dutch, but still it is her husband. Not only she but also Conan has to consider that different cultures has to be respected. They both don't wanna know the actual traditions and only tell the 'funny and weird' things that come with Sinterklaas. I shouldn't be this offended, and I'm really not. But people (especially Americans) are making fun about our traditions, or ruin them by being mad about it while they have no idea what they're really about and what they mean to us. I just think they could have been, and should have been, a little more respectful about it.

Don't get me wrong, my comment wasn't made as some butthurt Dutch person whose pride was hurt, no it's just that I find that they handeled our culture in a very disrespectful way. It's fine to make jokes about our culture, tbh I can really enjoy it when the Netherlands totally gets owned, but I don't like insulting jokes when there's no truth in them. I mean, would she haved joked about something we actually do I would have found it to be funny (of course when it's done respectfully) but the fact is that she doesn't. The only thing she really does is give some unfunny and mostly false facts about the Netherlands and insult her husband. Like I get how this is meant to be funny, but it's just not? The show went for quick easy "humor", while with a little more effort they could have actually made jokes about the weird shit we do (bc we really do some weird shit). I mean I don't mind people making fun of Dutch culture at all, more like the opposite please drag our asses I love that shit, but it needs to be done right.

Oh Drs. P, he was a very ancient looking man, but with the mind of a troller. Most of his songs are starting very normal sketching things in normal life, but the longer it takes, the more drama happens in his songs. It's pure brilliance. Although he made some cute songs as well about places, vegetables and fruits, making poetry of it. And sometimes naughty and dirty as hell. Let me tell you: it's not meant for children, but some songs they can enjoy it as well.
His most well known song is about a trojka in Russia with a family travelling to Omsk. While the ride goes on, a pack of wolves is hunting them down. One by one they get eaten by the wolves. They are throwing child after child to them, to have a chance of surviving with many. The contrast is that they sing songs to keep cheered up. In the end they all died with Omsk in sight. Ending with the legendary words: "Omsk is a beautiful city, but just a bit too far." Pure tragedy, but brought very funny and epic!

You're close, but not entirely. Sinterklaas is based on Saint Nicholas of Myra, a bishop who lived in the 4th century. Saint Nicholas Day and Christmas for us is a different holiday. Christmas is a christianisation of a germanic pagan feast, with Santa Claus actualy being a combination of the French/British tradition Father Christmas and the Lowlands tradition Sinterklaas. So yeah "our take on it" is more legit. The fun fact, however, is that the modern image of Santa Claus was popularised by 1930s Coca Cola adverts.

The song isn't a childrens song. The Sisters Karamazov is a song by Drs. P from 1957 and describes the story of two sisters, Constance and Mathilde, in Overveen who get into an argument about the division of an inheritance: Aunt Heleen's clothes. Drs. P (Thun, August 24, 1919 - Amsterdam, June 13, 2015), pseudonym of Heinz Hermann Polzer, was a Dutch-speaking writer with Swiss nationality. His stage name refers to the academic degree of doctoral student (abbreviated: drs.) in economics, which Polzer obtained at the Dutch Economic College (now Erasmus University Rotterdam). He was also a poet, writer, comedian, man of letters, composer, pianist and singer of self-written songs.
From the 1950s to 1996, Drs. P performed his songs in theaters, cafes, student associations and at events in the Netherlands and Belgium. He always accompanied himself on the piano.
Drs. P was mainly known in the 1970s and 1980s with singles such as Dodenrit, Veerpont ("To and fro"), Het stair portal ("The commensal"), Turnip and praise, salsify and leek and The sisters Karamazov. In the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders) he was a popular guest on radio and television.

The funny part though is that without OUR Dutch Sinterklaas (Who is based on the Turkish bishop St. Nicolas.) the Americans wouldn't even have had any Santa Claus. When the Dutch settlers went off to 'the new world' which has become America they took Sinterklaas with them as a tradition,(Which by the way gets celebrated on 5th december in The Netherlands and on 6th December in Belgium.) and over the years Sinterklaas got combined with 2 other caracters (1 being the German 'Father Christmas') and formed into Santa Clause. And then in 1934 Coca Cola made him into the guy everybody knows now. (And thats also the reason why Santa is in the same colours as the Coca Cola-logo.)
And THAT are the simple facts.

You should correct "as a Dutch person" to "as an easily offended person". The walnut thing was obviously a humorous hyperbole about a strange and austere foreign custom that he made up on the spot, not "this is actually what we think Dutch people do".

Santaclause is actually Sinterklaas, in america they erased the original story about the Turkish saint and combined it with that other saint, jesus.
Then, it was commercialized a lot, like coca cola had a big influence on his appearence.
But indeed, it's a totally different kind of day, but the person is the same. And in holland we use slaves instead of elfs X-D

Wtf she is talking about the dutch culture but has it all wrong

  • @lubnabadi
    @lubnabadi 9 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    Just to clear things up:
    1. The modern figure of Santa Claus is derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, whose name is a dialectal pronunciation of Saint Nicholas. So Santa Clause actually comes from a dutch tradition, but americans gave it a different name and made it more commercial.
    2. Sinterklaas has helpers 'Zwarte Pieten', which is now seen as a racist thing, especially in other countries (because they don't know the history behind it).
The history of 'Zwarte Piet' is actually that when he was a slave, Sinterklaas freed him and 'Zwarte Piet' was so thankful that he wanted to stay loyal to Sinterklaas and help him with helping more people, especially children. So he voluntarily stayed. But I understand very well that because of the history and how he looks like, people feel offended. The Netherlands is now changing the way Zwarte Piet looks, so like no golden earrings anymore & some even have different colors like yellow, white or blue.
    3. The last thing I want to say is, especially to Americans, please do your research about the Netherlands (and actually whole Europe). It has a lot of history and culture, which should be studied before making such weird statements. Cause this conversation is just full of ignorance.
