  • First ever DVD of Louis Vierne's Complete Organ Symphonies available to buy at fuguestatefilms.co.uk/viernec... Roger Sayer's magisterial performance of all six symphonies at the Temple Church, London, is filmed in 4k and recorded in both stereo and surround sound, and is available on both DVD and CD in the lavishly produced boxset, along with an extensive booklet with essays and specification of the organ. The 1923/1953/2013 Harrison and Harrison organ of the Temple Church, London, is the best possible instrument for these symphonies. Vierne travelled widely and we know he liked the 'Anglo-American' organ. The massive power and vivid detail of the Temple organ is captured in an apocalyptic recording that brings to life Vierne's magnificent symphonies. Music, artist and instrument truly meet as one.

How on earth did I miss this. I’ve never heard anyone play Vierne better than Roger. He treated us to him a lot at Rochester. The order is on its way.

The Temple Church will always be associated in my mind with the great Sir George Thalben-Ball, who presided at the organ there for over 60 years. It was one of the greatest privileges of my life to have been able to hear him play at services. Such a warm and kind person, too.

I can remember Roger and his son appearing on Pointless some years ago!

Thank you for streaming these on Sundays, Roger - it will keep us going until we can return to the Temple Lunchtimes in person!

RS chose to close this promotional video with an excerpt from that monster Final from the Fifth Symphony and what a tempo he takes! Although the Temple Church organ does not have the grandeur of both a larger instrument and acoustic space like Pierre Labric's cycle at St. Sernin's in Toulouse, this better serves Vierne's symphonies by not blurring in reverberation the hyper chromaticism contained in the music. A noble and worthy effort.

Bravo on this, but the Grande Piece was only phase 3 in the organ symphony's evolution. Compare the Vierne 5th's opener (and thus it's cyclic thematic material) with that of the Liszt Ad Nos :)

If filmed in 4k, why not release on Blu-ray?

      I'm wondering the same thing.

@@drbobdrake It would seem an odd omission to me, not to transfer the benefit of HD video and lossless audio to the finished product. I can think of at least one other UK-based recording company that packages organ music on Blu-ray + DVD (+ CD).

@@Colin-yh7oy There are additional costs involved for authoring BD discs, but the set is not inexpensive.
