    Me: Main issue with blood hunter is it's too MAD, needing four attributes.
    Chris: I don't think blood hunter is MAD enough so let's multiclass with cleric so we need wisdom too!

      @@NobodyDungeons I like it lot more as Int as there is way too few classes that use Int, and this way bloodhunter perfectly fills the trifecta of hybrid martial classes together with paladin (cha) and ranger (wis). And with standard blood hunter, you need strength to hit and damage, at least 14 dex for ac since blood hunters aren't proficient in heavy armor, con for hitpoints, and int for your special abilites.

    Fun, creative build!
    It makes me think of the Talosians in Paul S. Kemp's "The Twilight War" trilogy. The Talosians are very memorable characters.
    I also think of 4E's Kord, who is present in Matt Mercer's Exandria/Wildemount setting. This build would make for a cool Champion of the Stormlord in that context. Kord's doctrine allows for a variety of characters, and these mechanics would make that character fun to play.

    Just so you know, Sentinel and Warcaster don’t drop the target to 0 Movement. You aren’t making an opportunity attack when you use Warcaster to cast a spell instead of taking an opportunity attack.
    Sentinel- “Whenever you hit a creature with an opportunity attack, its speed drops to 0 for the rest of the turn. This stops any movement they may have been taking.”
    Warcaster- “When a hostile creature's movement provokes an opportunity attack from you, you can use your reaction to cast a spell at the creature, RATHER THAN making an opportunity attack. The spell must have a casting time of 1 action and must target only that creature.”
    Emphasis on rather than.
    Other than that, great video Chris!

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good catch! Yeah, so I guess you just make a regular attack with an opportunity attack. That's a bit unfortunate, but fortunately the thunder damage is not required for the build to work.

    • @keeganmbg6999
      @keeganmbg6999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Treantmonk's Temple precisely. It doesn’t break the build by any means, and honestly forcing an enemy to take the damage anyways from a Booming Blade still by no means is terrible. It doesn’t stop them 100% from moving but it can absolutely prevent them from wanting to move.

    • @Hendori3
      @Hendori3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@keeganmbg6999 i just took interest into this build, what I think is you don’t really need sentinel if you have spirit guardians going. If the enemy has a speed of 30 feet within the spirit guardians, the speed will be 15 feet. If the creature loses movement for closing in, then push it 10 feet, it will never be able to reach you again unless the creature dashes. If the enemy did that, it could not attack anymore. Always make sure that you are 10 feet from an enemy if possible. With the extra feat option open I would increase strength I think

    • @keeganmbg6999
      @keeganmbg6999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Hendori3 that only prevents melee not ranged, keeping sentinel helps prevent the ranged creatures from running away and attacking. Other than that I agree entirely. You could of course pick some ranged cantrips to aid in this.

    • @Hendori3
      @Hendori3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keeganmbg6999 if you have a ranged attacker, wouldn’t you be standing next to them? If they then try to move because they want to attack, you can do an opportunity attack. If they would disengage, they can’t attack anymore and wouldn’t be able to get out of the area of your spirit guardians. If they moved out while they want to attack, they do receive damage from the booming blade. I guess you would get hit by their attacks. But even then, I don’t see the sentinel feat as essential.

  • @b.b.927
    @b.b.927 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know when Matt updated it but I'm pretty certain there's a Variant Rule on the updated Blood Hunter that allows you to use Wisdom or Intelligence for your hemocraft features, saving throws, etc. Not sure if that necessarily means the multiclassing requirements change with it (since I can't find anything explicitly saying so) but it would pretty darn stupid if you ask me for that not to be the intention. If that's the case, you can definitely make this less MAD with that rule, and it opens up some much better flexibility for Blood Hunter builds since some of the subclasses work better with INT multiclassing and others work better with WIS.
    Edit: whoops didn't read other comments pointing this out a year ago lol

      Old comment but I’ll put my two cents in anyway. I’d do a dexterity based fighter wielding a whip in one hand and a sword in another. Go battle master and do stuff like trip attacks at 10ft, get sentinel etc. There are more effective options but I’ve been wanting to build a circus lion tamer fighter who uses a pistol and a whip. The same combo on a rogue could give off big Indiana jones vibes

    I'm thinking about making one of my npc enemies just be this player character.
    He would be in the street standing on a chair and he would have another empty chair 5 feet away from him. He would toss a spear at the toughest looking party member (preferably a fighter or a paladin) and he would say "I'll give you an entire set of my finest plate armor if you knock me off this chair, however, if you get knocked off your chair, I get something from you."
    There you go fellas, if you regret giving your party a magic item... that's one way to remove it.

    From the blood hunter PDF: As a bonus action, you activate a crimson rite on a
    single weapon with the elemental energy of a known rite of your choice that lasts until you finish a short or long rest, or if you aren’t holding the weapon at the end of your turn.
    If you choose the Order of the Ghostslayer, you're not locked into radiant damage. You get to choose which rite to use.

    With Tasha’s you can I believe get this pushing and locking down online at level 6 with just fighter. The pushing would be 5 ft. The way it works is get a custom lineage or variant human for the pole arm master feat. At lvl 4 get crusher feat and at lvl 6 the sentinel feat. Wield a quarterstaff. When an enemy closes, you get an opportunity attack with your quarterstaff which deals bludgeoning damage. Thanks to crusher you can move it 5 ft. (It works once per turn). Because of sentinel it’s move speed is now 0, so he is 5ft away being stuck. It works with most subclasses of fighter.

So it works out to be round 1) 1d6+3 plus either hex or lightning maybe both if you did the blood maledict or whatever before the fight and just kept the spear in hand constantly. Round 2) 1d6+3 plus 1d6(lightning) 1d6(necrotic) plus 1d4+3. You also have to hope you bless before hand or your stuck with +6 to hit in tier 3. Mutant vs Profane Soul
    Level 6
    Profane Soul
    Spear+Hex+Blood Rite (d6)+dueling
    ((10.5+6)*2)*.6= 19.8
    Polearm Master (9.5+6)*.6=9.3
    29.1
    Mutant
    Spear+Blood Rite+Potency Mutagen+Polearm Master+Bless
    (24+7.5+6)*.775=29.06
    -Bless=24+7.5+6*.65=24.375
    Profane Soul loses 9.3 damage on the turns it kills a target while mutant loses 24.375 on the turn it casts Bless. Which means that Mutant is better in fights where there are 3 or more targets and Profane Soul does more on turns where there are 3 or fewer targets. Mutant does more damage without using a spell slot but Profane Soul has more spell slots.
    Granted I didn’t apply the math to critical s which probably tilts things in the favor of Profane Soul.

    So I'm going to try this in my next game. Giving the character a backstory of being Thors son turned fully human by the new gods using fey magic. His blood is worthy of the powers of Thor so it explains the blood turning weapons into weaker mjollnir like weapons. Fey magic used explains why fey is a favorite target. He will be full on stereotype viking with horned helm and armor that looks cool but isn't period (plate like Odin in the Marvel movies but black and steel cuz I like that more). Speaking of Odin he is the reason he will use a spear. Hopefully I can talk my dm into letting in a homered weapon to mimic Gungnir (a spear that never misses would be too op but I think halfs opponents ac when used and hits when thrown that way I'll have to voluntarily disarm to make the auto hit feature), but I don't want to get that until very late in game when it wouldn't matter and everyone is godlike anyway. Maybe he could be raised by Loki to help with the hex magic aspect of the character. Its probably going to be a one-shot game for my fiances birthday so I don't think it will be too hard to convince the dm.

      Well I'm going to find out soon. My dm is running a lvl9 campaign and her only rule on multiclass is you have to be a minimum of 5 lvls of your starting class in any order as long as the lvl 9 character has 5 lvls of its starting class. I was going to go 1 cleric 4 bloodhunter and 4 cleric but I don't think there will be much of a difference going 6 cleric and 3 bloodhunter as long as I get those other 2 blood hunter lvls after. She is also working with me on belts of giant strength so that may help.

  • @jasonr.6123

    An interesting build for sure but I see a problem and that is as a melee character the constitution and dexterity saves are really low. Especially Dex. With a -1 in that area this character is not going to make many of them. I think what would work is to dump War Caster and take Resilient Dex to aid you there. Plus Booming Blade via Warcaster isn't going to reduce the speed of the opponent to zero which is what I think you're really going for in this build. I think you'd rather hit them with a regular opportunity attack to immobilize them. So even though you're doing less damage every round by forgoing BB you get to stand back and not risk any attacks.

    I really really would love if you could do a video on a melee light domain cleric. Basically im making Michael carpenter from dresden files. I have started fighter for heavy armour went two levels of cleric so far.
    I am considering going back to fighter for 4 more levels to get extra attack but i am the only one with any healing or inclination to do battlefield control. So also need to sit in cleric for a few more levels.
    Probably could have done this better with paladin but i wanted the bursts of radiant energy because of certain scenes in dresden files inspiring me basically.

    Not gonna lie, you were probably better off with the original Blood Hunter that used Wisdom to cut down on the abilities needed. If the original isn't in D&D Beyond, then I can understand. Plus, the Crimson Rite from the original is usable on multiple weapons, the opposite end of polearms counting as a separate weapon for it, making Polearm Master even better. Also, Diabolic Channel with Destructive Wrath would just be hilarious if done right. Yeah, you lose your character level in max HP for each Rite but that's high risk/high reward for you.
