- In his second State of the Union speech, President Joe Biden touted gun safety legislation passed under his administration that includes provisions like enhanced background checks for 18- to 21-year-olds and red flag laws, but said “our work is not done.”
The president also honored 26-year-old Brandon Tsay for saving lives by disarming the Monterey Park shooter who entered a second dance studio, where Tsay worked, over the Lunar New Year holiday. Biden then called on Congress to “ban assault weapons now,” citing an increase in mass shootings after a previous ban was allowed to expire.
Biden’s Feb. 7 address comes a year after Russia invaded Ukraine and amid new diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and China over a suspected surveillance balloon. This is Biden’s second State of the Union address, as his first was a joint address to Congress in April 2021.
Last year, Biden used his address to emphasize themes of bipartisanship and unity. But he now faces a split Congress, with the GOP-led House launching efforts to investigate his family and his administration.
