George MacKay was a perfect cast for this. He looked like he had time warped straight from WW1 and looks just like some soldiers in photos taken from it.
1917 is a cinematic masterpiece on every level that blew my mind. I went into knowing it would be impressive and it by far exceeded my expectations. It’s so immersive and emotional.
100% agree, as much as I loved Joker, I think this may have the edge. Controversial I know. It's so badass, patriotic, beautiful and frightening. Amazing.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I think George MacKay deserves the Oscar nod over Leo for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I feel like Leo always plays the same characters...the maniacal anti-hero. George's performance was incredible, especially the last few scenes where he is trying to get to the Colonel.
Dee Shan I disagree with you. George definitely should’ve been nominated but not instead of Leo. In OUATIH, Leo, who is a pretty confident and famous actor, plays an actor who: has zero confidence and has been forgotten about, which he notices massively, then he plays the actor playing a cowboy villain but the actor he plays has no range so he plays it not badly but not well. That’s genuinely incredible acting and one of the best performances in years. It’s literally acting on top of acting on top of acting. He was genuinely incredible! I believe he 100% deserves to be nominated.

I like how the German trenches were better than the British with metal struts in the tunnels and concrete foundations for the actual trench. It really tells you a story about the Germans and how much they sacrificed just to leave all that hard work behind for the enemy.

Got to see this film today and it is beyond stunning. I was timing the opening scene and was amazed that they did such a long take until I looked up some behind the scenes info. So well done. Such a wonderful dance of long, silent, pastoral scenes and heart in your throat stuff. High recommended. Will definitely be going into my movie collection.

I agree. I think that Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke are in big budget films so they’re successful on that level, but they’re typically not that good and are usually pretty poorly rated. Pedro Pascal has done well with The Mandalorian, but I think Dean-Charles Chapman has done well both in terms of production (fairly large budget films) as well as artistry.
Personally I still think Joker is a better movie. I guess it just comes down to which aspects of the filmmaking process you focus on more. From a technical, cinematic perspective, this movie is better. From a story, performance perspective, I think joker is better.

For a film that is one shot, it has some of, if not the best editing of the year and even decade. Surprising to think about, but it makes so much sense.

I’ve seen many interviews related to after seeing it on a big screen. I’d say interviewers’ questions do affect what interviewees will reply. I think the host here has done a great job by raising questions he had after seeing 1917 and would like to know more whereas just praising this film in an exaggerated manner. I particularly like about the ‘camembert idea’ revealed both by George MacKay and Krysty Wilson-Cairns starting from 9:03. I feel like I found another key to open a door.:)
Awesome movie. Great. Bravo. I thank God for these brave men.. Pray for the ones now. My great grandpa fought in WWI and came back in WWII and his sons, one being my granddad. War is hell. Thank you for showing reality of war. Maybe this younger generation can be Thankful for the sacrifices of their forefathers.

What I want to know was how do you edit a movie like that? Usually it's normal to film a bunch of footage and it's like 3 or 4 hours. Then you would edit and cut it down to what the movie ends up being. How do you edit a movie that's all in one shot? What happens if the full thing is an hour too long but you can't cut stuff?
Its shot "like" a one shot. A take is up to 8-10 mins long, so there are edits, but they're are VERY cleverly done. Then its matching the actors movement from end of shot X to start of shot Y and so on.
