You should watch the music video next. I’ve always said that the studio version and the music video are two very different, but equally important experiences. And I think the music video works best after you’ve already heard the studio version, rather than the other way around. • @MetalHeadReacts
    @MetalHeadReacts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The song is based off the movie "Johnny got his gun" and is possibly one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen but really highlights the horrible toll of war and the way that these soldiers and veterans are treated. The official music video for the song even contains clips from the movie and really makes the message in the song hit home, right in the feels.
I really like it when people, such as yourself, expand their mind and explore other genres of music, and even admit that you had this bias earlier in life. It's a common misconception that heavy metal lyrics are meaningless, violent and evil. You tend to find that a lot of metal music has some VERY deep lyrics covering a vast array of subjects like war, homlessness, substance abuse, domestic abuse, the state of the environment etc... something that isn't too often covered in more popular styles of music.

physical sensations, and also, his arms and legs, and is taken away for experimentation. That's a movie you should watch on a sunny day... The song makes a wonderful tribute to that movie.

My man don't forget about picks, tuners, strap, and stand/bag/case. Those add to total costs. Just bought my kid another guitar.
Also the guitars with built in tuners are pretty awesome. They are great for learning and not trying to be perfect.
You gotta react to "Shake That" - Eminem ft. Nate Dog for a club type song or "One Shot, Two Shot" - D12 for a story telling song.

    • @MrBegmar

Nah, he don't need a tuner, strap or case. Today there is plenty of tuner apps on smartphones and computers. For beginner it will be enough. Also it's better to learn how to tune guitar by ear. Strap, stand or case can become handy, but on low budget it's just better to buy better guitar.

If you pay close enough attention this song actually has a really deep progression, both lryically and musically. It starts out soft and dreamy, and slowly transitions into the thrashing drums and guitar, mirroring the person's journey from waking up confused and eventually descending into panic and fear as he realizes what happened to him.

rock is known for not straying from dark human emotions and sadness, but there is an unsaid strength behind the songs and thats in the music, u can bob your head and when you can separate yourself from it and remember its art you can enjoy it, like a John wick film, there is intense violence and most of us dont want that to happen to anyone, but its entertainment and you may find yourself realize you have all those emotions at times in your life, not so specifically to the story of a war veteran but simply the lyrics about feeling claustrophobic , and you find strength and excitement and yourself happily going "DARKNESS IMPRISONING ME , ALL THAT I SEE" , thats part of rock, just accepted a heaviness at times but seperating it and making it into something you can step over, go to a metallica show and see these songs arent really downers, but uppers, especially those parts. Its an inverse relationship sometimes, its layered, its not all in the lyrics, its the melody and beat, there have been songs too heavy in theme for me at times but after years and growth you go back and ur like yea, I can love this freely because im set free from those emotions, now I can celebrate the humanity behind the song, the song is a bit sad but also a celebration of strength in that people who have felt that darkness literally or partly relate, they can make it into something beautifully moving, like this song, its about knowing ur sadness isnt a fault, but a binding factor in our existence, thats where you start to listen to rock songs and feel the purpose of it, its not supposed to be easy listening always!
IF u want happy rock tho listen to some blink 182, they arent heavy but they are irrelevant on purpose and thats what made em big, they are supposed to be light hearted to provide relief, even tho lyrically they sing some downer ish stuff too. "every time I look for you" "Reckless abandon" have some fun feels and the drums are awesome, especially in reckless abandon, also in the song "rollercoaster" those are more light hearted. Travis barker is an infamous drummer . Not the most profound songs lyrically, but if u want catchy fast paced happy sounds that rival the catchiness of anything on the radio, thats a great band. Atleast for some of their albums, now they kinda suck IMO

Something else about a lot of people who walked past music like this when they were young... this music is intricate. If it's played over FM radio and/or little speakers that are overdriven, it's mush. Fuzz with a changing tone, all the little tiny bits get lost or worse, changed... one of the chugg riffs has a lower octave three instrument harmonic. That bass harmonic, played over a system that's pushing or past it's limit, sounds like the honk you'd get out of a 10' tall goose, or a tremendous fart if the equipment's really bad. (ED: 12:30 to 12:38 is the one prone to 'gronking').
You want a happy song from the band that excels at pointing out the evils of humanity? Well... Hit The Lights and Whiplash are crowd pumpers from the first album, you've got the instrumentals, and some selections from Black, Load, and Reload that aren't deepdamndark. The Master of Puppets and Justice albums are both thematic on malevolent control/string pulling and injustices, respectively... which is a shame because while the subject matter gets super deep, those albums have some of their best thrash and thrash/prog metal.

If you truly want to learn my guy. Start off with an Acoustic. One for about 150. Play it and learn for about a year. And when you get your first electric. Get a good one. Mine was an Ibanez. I gave right at 700 for it. It was amazing. 3 yrs later I sold it for 900. Just learn man. Metallicas intros r pretty easy to play and learn from. The easiest songs in my opinion is AC/DC songs to learn. Good luck

fun fact: the intro to One by Metallica is one of the easiest guitar riffs you can learn that involve picking, and i highly recommend learning it. if you can get it down, the mini-solo that follows the intro is also surprisingly easy.

Music is subjective in how it makes you feel. The same with all art forms. We take what we take from it emotionally and intellectually. Great reaction.

Now you should check out the official music video for this song.
The video for this song was Metallica's first music video they ever made. It was also a big departure from pretty much every other music video other musician's had released up to that point.
They really made something special with that video.
The story the song is based on, Johnny Got His Gun, is about WWI, so the subject may have been drafted, not a volunteer. I am not sure on that point. The movie clips used in the video are from a real movie based on the original book, edited in a bit out of order to work with the emotional arc and message.

You say it won’t make the playlist until you listen to it, all the way through, 3 times and then you are hooked. But, Whiskey in the Jar is an upbeat song based off an old Irish folk song and first converted to a rock song by Thin Lizzy, who was an Irish band with a black Irishman lead singer. Or try So What ,,,, upbeat as hell!

I normally watch your UK rap/grime reactions but I'm also a huge metalhead, so it's cool to see you do this. You made me chuckle though: UK rap, always catching the bars, metal sung relatively slowly: - checking your phone because you don't want to miss the lyrics :)

Fade to Black is a real deep song. Check that one out man. James Hetfield wrote it when all their gear was stolen in the winter of 83 in Boston I think it was Boston but he was so depressed but got out of his depression of losing all their gear by writing one of the greatest Metal Ballad type song ever.

All I have to say, being 49 years old, and first hearing this song when I was 18......playing it over and over again.....knowing the horror of such a situation.....and seeing someone else actually "realize" it as well....A strange camaraderie, a strange sense of mutual respect and understanding.....it is satisfying...
I mean, I haven't experienced this soldiers plight....
But, I understand how it feels to be alive and feel dead (and want to be dead) at the same time....
Differing circumstances…..yet equal effect...and to see someone else see this......

Having dipped my toes into the guitar-playing hobby, I assure you that you can play intros and rhythm stuff as you wanna.
Given that you learn some basics on how to do it, of course.
It's an amazing feeling even if you don't feel like going full fledged. Still rewarding!
