  • In this video, I show how my Musa basjoo banana plant has done over the summer. I also discuss overwintering it briefly as we are now getting closer to the time when protecting it will be necessary, although there is still plenty of time to enjoy it.

Very impressive size on those Musa. The trunk on them is amazing. Good job, Peter. 👍🏽

Thanks, Dom! Yeah, I’ve got so used to them being there I often forget how much they’ve grown. It’s only when I check back to previous updates that I notice.

A very impressive banana clump now Peter, its a shame about the shredded leaves but a penalty of our climate. Frankly you would think they were big enough almost to flower by next year 🤞

Thanks, Brett! Yeah, it’s grown into an impressive size now. The leaf shredding this year is the worst it’s ever been. But apart from looking a bit unsightly, it doesn’t affect the plant at all. Hopefully next year we might see a flower 🤞

Yeah, the wind has been really damaging this year, hopefully, we have a mild winter and a better summer next year 🤞

It's huge! My bajoo Ill have to keep smaller as I dont have space at my allotment for one of similar height to yours! Heres hoping a warm summer next year will trigger yours to flower 🙌🌿

Thanks, Conor! Yeah, they are absolutely huge now! I was thinking of planting one at my allotment, I thought I'd be the only one growing one, but I noticed someone is already growing one there lol 😂. Yeah, I really hope we have better weather next year 🤞

Healthy looking plants, it's always a shame about the shredded leave so I try to enjoy the newly-unfurled ones while I can!
As for overwinteriung, I'm leaning on reduced the amount of protection I'll give mine as the pseudostems are now pushing 8ft. I've also started another small clump which I will leave fully unprotected as an experiment.

Thanks! Yeah, shredded leaves are annoying, although unavoidable with the location I have it in. That being said the damage this year has been much worse than usual.
I'm thinking after this clump starts flowering I'll stop wrapping it in winter, except if we get an extreme cold spell.
I planted a second basjoo from this clump in my front garden last year and decided I wasn't going to give it any protection (well other than some leaves as mulch around the roots). It ended up getting frozen to the ground but came back this year. Unfortunately, it's not grown too much so it will likely end up freezing through again. It's in a much more exposed position and the soil isn't very good where I planted it.

My own bananas were frozen solid despite wrapping and did not regrow , so my new plants are potted and will be kept frost free

It's a shame they didn't regrow, Gordon. Yeah, I can see why you want to keep the new ones frost-free, especially if they are still quite small and in containers. I overwintered one in a pot in my greenhouse the other year, which turned out ok.

Very good size when will it likely to flower I live near southdowns we had lot of wind which has shedded my leaves.

Thanks, yeah I think it should be at a size where it could flower, but seems like it won't be this year now. Yeah, this year has been winder than usual over the summer. I've never seen so much wind damage on them before.
