    Your Pawpaws are looking great Peter.
    Well done on the successful Overleese graft. Hopefully you’ll get fruit next year 🙌🏾🌱

      Thanks, Joe! Yeah, I'm hoping I might get a few flowers to try to hand-pollinate next year 🤞

    Great to see that you have successfully grafted to a Pawpaw Peter

      Thanks, Mike! Yeah, I'm very pleased with how these are coming along! The others I grafted at the same time and left in small pots do not look as healthy. They don't seem to do well when kept in small containers.

    Those 2 look amazing Peter, they've really put on strong growth since you grafted them. Would be nice to see a couple of flowers next year

      Thanks, Brett! Yeah, I've been very impressed with how these have done since grafting them and even more so since planting them just over a year ago. The ones I kept in pots really need repotting or planting in the ground. In fact, because the pots are so tiny they keep drying out and now the leaves are all going yellow and dropping 😬

    Well done on the grafting Peter! The roots must be very healthy judging by the foliage!

      Cheers, Paul! Yeah, they seem pretty happy with their location 👍. I'm hoping I'll eventually be able to get some fruit here 🤞

    They're looking really good, Peter. I know some of your small pawpaw plants have flowered already so you're in a good position to start getting fruit soon.

      Thanks, Dom! Yeah, one of my ‘Sunflower’ pawpaws I still have in a pot put out a flower this year. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before I start getting fruit 🤞

    The most importan thing is that it could have survived the summer. Here in Northern Italy I had to water every day my Primia 1216's little plant

      Yeah, thankfully we have had plenty of rain during summer, so I’ve not needed to water these in the ground. Although, some of the ones I have in pots have suffered a bit when it was a bit drier.

    Well done Peter, in getting them to survive the winter outdoors and suceed with the grafting of them. As they are related to the Anona family have you thought of grafting a cherimoya onto one of the trees?

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks, Louise. Of course, Pawpaws come from parts of the US that get much colder winters than the UK, so cold hardiness isn’t a problem. The main issue I’ve had with them so far is slug/snail damage. They love to eat the bark on them when they are young. Also sometimes seedlings can just randomly die while they are young, I’ve not worked out why yet, but it might be root rot due to our excessive rain over the winter months. I haven’t researched it extensively, but it seems like Cherimoyas aren’t graft-compatible with Pawpaws.

      @PeterEntwistle oh I thought they were related. I don't know much about paw paws, I've never even tasted one, I've only seen them on utube!

      @@louiseahmedtropicalplantgr5000 they are related (in the same family), but they are in a different genus. It seems they aren’t close enough to be compatible. I was lucky enough to get to try some last year as Brett kindly posted a couple of his for me to try. It did remind me a lot of Cherimoya actually.

    They look stunning ! I'll have to learn how to graft pawpaws soon myself.... Quick question, what material do you use for that plastic tag? I tried myself with a couple tags, but they faded out quite quickly...

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Hey Emil! Yeah, pawpaws are quite easy to graft, so a great one for a beginner grafter to attempt.
      For the the black plastic labels I use white paint pens the specific one I use is "Uni Posca". They last much longer than Sharpies or permanent markers. The sun quickly causes the marker pen ink to fade, so within a few months, they are no longer readable. I've found the labels I have written with paint pens can last for years. They are still not permanent though and can sometimes start to become harder to read. So I have started using aluminium metal tags and press in the name, which should theoretically last even longer.

    • @MoebiusUK
      @MoebiusUK 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I've recycled aluminium soda cans to use as tags. They work really well.
      I cut them to size using a strong pair of scissors, then use a hole punch to make a hole and attach to the plant using cable ties. A ball point pen works really well in embossing the plant name onto the diy tag.

      @@MoebiusUK yes, that’s a really good idea. I think I remember the Virginia fruit grower posting a video of making some labels out of cans.

      @@PeterEntwistle Yes. I copied VFG. 😂 I'm so glad I did because most of my labels had faded by 99%.
