You could say that Paul McCartney single handedly invented heavy metal with this song - ironic considering that people mostly think of him as a baladeer
The debate during 1968 was between either "The Kinks" -- "You Really Got Me" -- or "The Yardbirds" "inventing" "hard rock" -- a label that was later changed to "heavy metal". And they tend to think of John Lennon as a rocker though he was every bit as good, and sometimes better at ballads, than McCartney: listen to "This Boy".
They ARE coming like that. The Beatles did it ALL: heavy metal, proto-funk rock, Raga rock, Soul, R&B, Boy Band, Gospel, Psychedelic Rock, Avant-Garde, Experimental, Road-House rock, Music Hall, Cabaret, French Jazz, Folk, ALL of it. Only one artist I can think of has this audacious range of different styles and moods: PRINCE. And when he plays that now iconic guitar solo to Beatle George Harrison's While My Guitar Gentle Weeps, it's Prince the genius' way of shouting out to the Beatles that their wonderful, otherworldly range enabled Prince himself to go HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE
@@bobwoolerOriGinal : Well, in that proverbial jam session in the sky, the likes of Nina Simone, Aretha, Bobby Marley, and Jimi Hendrix are lookin' over to THAT clique of Beatles, Bowie, and Prince, knowing that the Crewe of Qwelle will come up with some audacious setlist. @@donnydomingo9962 : Absolutely! Two songs immediately "pop" into mind, Raspberry Berry was a very cheeky, loving allusion to the Beatles psychedelic folk-classicism fusion, circa 1965-1967 (the video with Prince in a quasi-Pepper and Yellow Submarine costume further solidifies his shout-out); Pop Life and Around the World in a Day and so many others also convey Prince's shout-outs to the Fab Fah. But for me, it's Prince's wild eclecticism -- funk, hardrock, soul, pop, folk, psychedelic rock--his fearless, bravura embrace of all kinds of musical styles and cultures that most closely resembles the Beatles' own anarchic rejection of confining labels. There are many artists who will try a different style once and in a while. But only the Beatles and Prince defined their styles by having no end of styles, no end of experiments: they could revise, re-think, re-Imagine (oh, yeah, pun intended) because that was and will always be their particular genius. THAT is what links them.
You were like “ooo this might be the best song I ever heard” and I was like yeah why the Beatles always be doing that? Literally goat shit and it’s not even in my top 10 Beatles songs. Greatest. Band. Ever.
This is from the white album; that album alone has so many different types of music on it; just listen to the whole thing, you’ll be amazed. And sgt. pepper and revolver and abbey road. That’s why they’re the greatest
No this wasn't the first hard rock song. I'm mean c'mon Jimi Hendrix first album was full of hard rock which came out over a year earlier and you had bands like Blue Cheer and Iron Butterfly who released albums earlier in 1968.
@@dsfddsgh All those groups didn’t play rock as hard as in Helter Skelter. Jimi Hendrix was doing a kind of blues-psychedelic rock, but not hard rock at all
It's definitely not the 1st hard rock song, and not the 1st heavy metal track. There is actually no such thing, as a "first time", because it is all the result of a development. The Beatles (who, by the way, already released "Hardrock" in 1965 with "I'm down" and even earlier quite wild rock'n'roll tracks) often added "something special" to such developments and also had the fantastic talent, to present every style convincingly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Nah. This was described by Paul as a response to "I can see for Miles" by The Who. Velvet Underground had already put out their first album prior to this (Punk-Hard-Garage rock). I would describe it as hard rock as well as Hendrix , Cream, Yardbirds. Hard Rock already existed. This was just the Beatles pushing the boundaries of the form. Also there was a guy named Link Wray who put out a single in the early 60's called "Rumble". I would describe it as "Hard Rock".
Emily, your gonna find with the Beatles that they have SO Many different sounds, and they are all good, don't be surprised when you hear something different ,afterall it's the Beatles.
Many consider this to be the beginning of heavy metal. Don’t ever expect any Beatles song to sound like another Beatles song. That’s what makes them the greatest band ever. That’s Ringo (drummer) yelling at the end about blisters on his fingers. Paul may have an infinitely sweet voice when he sings love songs but he also has one of the best rock n’ roll voices ever. His comment about this song was “I just like noise”. This song is about a British amusement park ride. Great reaction! 😍
A "Helter Skelter" was an old-timey amusement park slide in Britain that started at the top and wound its way around the outside of what looked like fat lighthouse.
The Beatles are awesome. I am 61 years young. My sister, who is 10 years older than myself had almost all of their albums when I was growing up. I had an awesome childhood! Too bad that I had to grow up.
Everything they did was different. That's why they are and always will be the greatest band ever. 13 albums in 7 years and if I remember correctly it's 27 #1 songs. Nobody comes close.
Oh, yes! This was The Beatles. Paul McCartney, the singer of Oh Darling, also doing the lead singing and John Lennon on bass this time around instead of Paul. To really switch it up go from Helter Skelter to AND I LOVE HER. You will really see how the Beatles can morph into so many different styles.
Saw Ozzy Osbourne on The Howard Stern Show and they surprised him with a meeting from Paul McCartney. Ozzy was a huge Beatles fan. They were a big influence on him. He was so nervous like a little girl.
the Beatles were masters of every kind of music.... for other hard rock Beatles check out "Revolution" (the live version), "A Hard Day's Night", "Paperback Writer", "And Your Bird Can Sing", and "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey"
EMI are monsters for protecting Beatles content, but I'm loving everything you did - pity you haven't done anything more recently. You're a very likeable person, and it shines through on your reactions. I've only just stumbled across your channel and I'm hooked.
@009 remaster doesn't mean recorded in 2009/ Half of the Beatles were dead by then. Remastered means they changed the way the song sounded in the studio.
The Beatles only recorded together for about seven years and in that time, they set the standard. Each one of them had their own style that contributed to their success, even after over 50 years since the broke up. I would recommend that you listen to their works post Beatles. Paul McCartney went on to form the band Paul McCartney and Wings. John Lennon went on and did quite a few good songs up until he was shot and killed. George Harrison had many hit songs with his signature guitar sound and Ringo followed up with some hits of his own. Sadly, only Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are still living.
Paul singing (also sang: Oh, Darling; Hey, Jude; Yesterday). Ringo screams to the end. Remaster does not mean different voice, etc. Now, listen to Yer Blues by John. BTW, Charles Manson thought he was a member of the Beatles and believed this song was a message to him.
So, you like their hard rockin’ stuff? Check out their covers of “Twist And Shout” and “Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey” from their earlier period and “Birthday”, and “I Want You/She’s So Heavy” from their later stuff. Of course, there are a lot more but those are good for a start. As other people have already stated, The Beatles were the most diverse rock band in history. They did all kinds of music (rock, pop, world music, country, psychedelic, folk, blues, etc. etc. etc.).
Perspective there was no metal and 68. And Paul McCartney is singing this one The one who sang yesterday. Listen to Michelle, And I love her, Sgt.Peppers lonely hearts club band, strawberry fields, I am the walrus, Elenor Rigby, and Let it be. Then you will understand the diversity and genius of the Beatles
I'd add Yer Blues, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, Yesterday, Rocky Racoon, She's Leaving Home, Across the Universe only to see the diversity of The Beatles. Considering that 3 out of 6 titles come from the same album is astounding. And it's still just scratching the surface. The best one can do is just go through all their songs in the order (some albums just should be listened this way as the songs are directly linked with one music still fading and other already starting or simply the way they are connected, either by similarity or contrast).
So far, I've watched you react to "Let It Be," "Oh, Darling," and now "Helter Skelter." They were all written by and sung by Paul McCartney. I didn't see your reaction to "Hey Jude" (and yeah, I'd like if you put it back, blocked screen and all), and it was also written and sung by Paul McCartney. I'll have to look at your channel and see if you've reacted to any of the songs that John Lennon or George Harrison wrote. Oh, and do check out "Octopus' Garden," written and sung by Ringo Starr.
Don't worry much about 'remastered'. Beatle remasters are not totally different, more like cleaned up, like going from cassette to CD. nearly every song style , including the ones they invented ( tomorrow never knows.....) How happy was I when they went back to their guitars from the Artsy stuff
Baby baby sweetheart the Beatles or have a men’s incredible unbelievable amount of energy and incredible mother diversity keep listening to them sweetheart
Paul could raunchy up his voice! Listen to Why Don't We Do It In The Road. Same amazing album!!! Them listen to Rocky Racoon same album. Hell, just listen to the whole album.
This is the Beatles responding to a pompous Pete Townsend proclaiming the Who had just recorded the raunchiest song ever written in 'I Can See for Miles', On Beatles Bible Paul explains - I was in Scotland and I read in that Pete Townshend had said: ‘We’ve just made the raunchiest, loudest, most ridiculous rock ‘n’ roll record you’ve ever heard.’ I never actually found out what track it was that The Who had made, but that got me going; just hearing him talk about it. So I said to the guys, ‘I think we should do a song like that; something really wild.’ And I wrote ‘Helter Skelter’.

Disagree. And there wasn't an 'album' version. It was released as the b side to 'Get Back'. The rooftop version was only released on 'Let it Be..Naked' much later and even then as a composite version of the two performances on the roof.
This one considered the first heavy metal song ever made. The Beatles were always innovating and creating new sounds. Versatility.
