That hit by Mecklenburg on Marcus Allen was one of the most vicious I ever saw until Atwater came along, and was a feature highlight on local Bronco shows for years. Plunkett completely left Allen out to dry on that pass and Meck leveled the hell out of him.
So happy you have the Dennis Smith hit on Rosevelt Potts. Haven't seen that in ages. What a time when Smith and Atwater were running around laying dudes out.
The most feared safety tandem of the 80s, if not all time. DS49 came from the university of safteys cause concussions winning a national title with Ronnie Lott a SC. I was super glad to see that hit because I had brought it up a few times but could not remember the name of the Colts player that got sent to la la land. Now I have it cemented in my memory. Potts was a big dude and Smith just leveled him. I was a little kid when I saw that and still remember it.
I used to own a VHS of the history of the broncos around that time and I believe that was the moment that Mike Shanahan knew he had something special in TD and was no longer on the chopping block. He was possibly going to be cut by the last preseason game of the season. He was 6th rb on the depth chart. His fellow players egged Mike on to let him run the ball after that play. If that hit never happened we might not have had those few very special seasons with Davis. One of the most important big hits in broncos history.
Okoye's career went down the toilet after that hit. He was very hyped, people supposedly couldn't stop him. Atwater knocked him on his ass and I think it disintegrated his confidence.
A combo of the Atwater hit & knee injuries are what ultimately ended the career of Christian Okoye. 260lbs is simply TOO MUCH WEIGHT/PRESSURE on the human knee joint... The knees can only take so much pressure/weight before they ultimately fail/give out.
@@fredharvey2720 You're correct but Okoye spent significant time on IR (Injured Reserve) due to several knee injuries as well. Too much weight for his knees to carry + the Atwater hit = end of career in the NFL.
The second I saw you included the Super Bowl 32 McCaffrey block, I hit the like button. No "best block/hit" list is complete if that one isn't included . Only because I'm a biased Broncos fan and remember how badass it was when it happened 🤣
Thx for #9 that Kenoy Kennedy vs Chris Chambers hit is hard to find , also thank god for TH-cam as for many years I thought I was the only one who remembered the time that Dennis Smith killed the Roosevelt Potts hype train just as Atwater did to Okoye. If I remember right that game was the 3rd or 4th of RPs rookie year and he had been a big surprise in the first quarter of that season w/ having a few 100 yd games of powerful running. It was right around the time in a season when announcers/etc first start up their ROY talk & then Blammo - Dennis Smith.
Exactly Man! That Hit was beautiful and impactful. If it had taken place on Monday night football then it might be just as good as Steve Atwater’s Hit on okoye
Good to see Al Wilson. I loved that guy. I completely forgot about that Todd Heap hit. As good and as big of a hitter Dennis Smith was, he's overshadowed by Atwater. I'd have put #5 at 4 over the Romo hit for sure.
He was most likely going to be cut. He was a 6th round rookie and 6th RB on the depth chart. That single play wow'd Mike Shannahan and the rest of his teammates started asking Mike to "let the rook run". From there he was given the opportunity to run the ball in the remaining preseason games and the rest is history ♥️. One of the most important big hits in Broncos history.
Very nice compilation. The only one missing - and it's tough to locate - was Randy Gradishar sending Saints TE Henry Childs' helmet sailing 15 yards downfield.
This is a bit random, but if anyone can find the tackles that Phillip Lindsay had in the preseason for his first year, I would love to see them. I don't think he had any crazy hits like TD, but I immediately thought of TD when Lindsay made plays on Special Teams.
Huge fan of both Lynch and Atwater. They both seem to explode on contact when putting those big licks on those poor receivers!!! 😂 Brian Dawkins, Ronnie Lott, Ed Reed...all those big hitters all seem to have that certain something that happens at the point of contact that is just so vicious and so goddamn awesome to watch!!! Oh and my guy Harrison Smith too!! Lol!!!
Man! As a Broncos fan I loved this! Some of my all time favorite hits on here. Al Wilson’s hit on Wheatley. Atwater hit on Okoye’. Dennis Smith laying out Potts. But how bout Mecklenburg’s hit on Marcus Allen? Dope! Broncos Fan since ‘75!
Hes the worst lol. Big hitter but horrible person and poor sport/dirty player. Also racist. I dont like watching him even if the hit is big. No place in any profession for that type of person, even if its sports.
those Dennis Smith hits on Roosevelt Potts and bill Johnson were pretty vicious as were those Atwater hits😳😲 😆😂🤗🤗 And watching Mike harden punish Steve largent was really a pleasure to watch. Too bad Elvis didn't deliver a helmet to helmet hit on Brady though, that would of definitely ended that cheater's career early 😆😂
I remember that atwater hit in the super bowl. I was like 10 years old and literally thought one of those guys might be dead on the field. Two need to be added. Gradshiers hit on Earl Campbell on the goal line. Campbell went over the top, meet #53 and got knocked back 4 yards. And how about Rich Karlis when he karate kicked a Oakland Raider on a kickoff.
I do have the Gradishar Hit on Earl Campbell Hit. I actually used that hit in a video on my old channel. Sorry it didn’t make the cut for this list tho, and I do not have footage of Rich Karlis Karate kicking a Oakland Raider, I wish I did
How do you show all these hits multiple times a piece, then finally get to number one (which everyone knew was atwater laying out okoye lol) and barely show it?
I think it's a tie between Atwater's hit on Okoye and John Lynch's hit on Dallas Clark. It was clean shot and Clark didn't know where he was for awhile.
Now that Steve Atwater is in the HOF, why is Randy Gradishar still NOT IN THE HOF? Before Steve Atwater, there was Randy Gradishar laying guys out flatter than pancakes... Klecko was a Pro Bowler at 3 different positions while Gastineau retired as the single-season/career Sacks record holder... Writers need to PUT DOWN THE DOPE.

A poor sport, dirty playing, drug using, woman beater is not a good look for the NFL and not what the HOF standa for. Are there any other players in the HOF that were in prison after they played football? Genuinely interested if there are.
