Just picked one up at the car boot sale for a fiver! Brand new, never used. Couldn't understand why the stuff sack was big enough for two of them...this became apparent on deflation and rolling it back up...now it fits back in perfectly. Much bulkier than the UL80 but if you've got the space then those side panels mean you don't roll off, the pillow is well handy and it's oh, so quiet when you turn over. I did a stopwatch of 3min33secs and 101 pumps of the foot. Great for side & back sleeping.
What a refreshing change, an informative, and intelligent problem solving review. I've just ordered one off Amazon for £46 and was getting a peed off with some reviews I've watched, but I can safely say now I'm comfortable with the choice. I have used a UL 80 for some time for extended periods and found it to be comfortable but narrow, so looking forward to tomorrow's delivery. Thanks lad.
Great review as always. For those that are interested in this pad but are wanting to know the ACTUAL R value, I have just received confirmation directly from products support at Trekology. The R Value is only 1.8. Not the hoped for 4.5 to 5 others have claimed on their reviews. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your style as an outdoorsman.
Thank you! Just bought it and I was wondering if it would be any good for my next wild camping expecting a temp of -2C (28F), feels pretty empty inside and was not really believing that 4.5-5 that others said…maybe with a traditional 2.2 mat on top…
Hi Dan. Thanks for this. It’s just popped through the door this morning. I sleep like a sideways view of a runner 🏃♀️ so need something wider than the Thermarest. Camping and canoe practice with Ant, Rick and Matt tomorrow so trying it out. Cheers ATB.
Mate, I've changed my opinion of the 140 mat a little, it does look very comfy, I think because of the inbuilt pillow that's the reason it seems short? Maybe a manufacturing mistake because if the mat was flat it would probably do a 6 footer easy, the UL 80 is plenty long enough for me, and I'm 7ft 2 🤣
Yeah the in built pillow being the reason for it feeling short crossed my mind too. I’ve never liked the idea personally but as I’m a shorty it doesn’t cause any problems. I really like the mat itself, easy to inflate comfy and wide and for 50 notes what’s not to like!
Great video! Bought a couple of these last spring for Motorbike camping with the missus. It's easy to opt for smaller pack-down size for biking, but for good rest and less ear-ache these are well-worth the extra bungee... And for £50 I've not seen anything to beat them. After a few uses, our mattresses DO deflate through the night though (Not to be unexpected) but it's 20-30 seconds for a decent lie-in. Length/height-wise - I'm 6'2" and like you say "It doesn't matter".
Ordered the UL 140. After watching your demo. Will use it for bivvying with the DD Frontline XL... I'm interested in the cloth you have as an anti slip around thang... what is it made out of and do you rate it...if yes .. do you have a link you can share? Thanks in advance
Hi buddy. Great review 👏. I recently purchased one of those self inflating egg shell style camping matts which cost me £36. Its ok but is quite noisy when you move on it and also its quite thin. Now you have had this for a while do you still recommend it as I am wondering if its worth spending the extra 🤔. Also how easy is it to get back in the bag. Subscribed 👌
It’s definitely an improvement on the egg shell mat you mentioned. Yes I still like it but it’s a bit bulky, this summer I’ve used it’s smaller (a little thinner and not as wide) brother the UL80 quite a lot which is just as comfy but half the pack size. I think the 140 has slightly more R value but if you use a foil mat in winter under it to reflect your body heat back up at you the 80 is ok. The short version is that both are decent. It’s a question of how much space you have in your bag. I don’t think I’ve reviewed the 80 but it’s in most of my recent videos if you want to see it. Thanks for the sub Dan
I own both the UL80 and the UL140, I have only used the Ul140 once just slightly below zero and I was plenty warm, I did have a foil mat underneath though, so maybe that helped. I slept so well, I am a side sleeper and found it real comfy. Nice review Dan, honest and fair 👍👍👍
I've been pleased with my thinner mat by another company but the value of this UL140 looks excellent. Bit more bulky but worth the extra for the comfort. It will be my next purchase I think. Thanks for the review. Cheers, W :)
Just put your hands on the sovereign and play the Bee Gees. Looks a big comfy mat. Can you use the new pump on it and see what the inflation times are?
you can use the pump, I tried it on UL80 mat which has the same valve and it took a couple of minutes max. I will try it on this one when I remember to take the pump out. I would guess around the 3 minute mark.
Dan👍👍 Nice review of a nice product. Looks comfy for sure, thick and soft. Unfortunately for me just a little short, at 6'5" I'm afraid from my knees down would be unsupported. For the price, I'd say not a bad deal at all. Enjoy!
Right, we're coming on summer in your part of the world. Can you use it as a Li-Lo on water? Which of the mats can you realistically use on water without it folding like a sandwich? 🤔. #wildswimming. I'm figuring Rob's hammock mat would be awesome on the water.
I was thinking about your inflatable kayak, if the seat was out of it, could you sleep in it? It'd be insulated as hell! I've anchored up a hard kayak on the water before and dozed off on a winters night (laid flat on my back) while fishing - I was rugged-up because it was winter. Mosquito management was the biggest issue I found with sleeping on the water.
Without seeing I couldn’t say. However, try inflating it and then submerging it in a cold bath and look for bubbles. Alternatively as it’s only 2 weeks old contact trekology and ask for a replacement.
@@CampLifeBushcraft I'm of the belief that klymit have been telling Porkie pies about their r values, I think if you divide their numbers by 2 you're probably closer to the truth. So I'm hoping this might outperform the klymit, certainly looks substantial. 👍🏼
So comfy once you finally get up mines great wakes me up every 3 hours by going down don't waste money save n get thermarest or like tbh I wasted money on three cheaper mats n always wondered why everybody doing Abit had good expensive mate now no cos you get what you pay for
time will tell I guess, I've used it more since this video and its so comfy. but if it fails out of the blue I will put it on camera. that being said I have the big red klymit mat and they're not cheap, mine has failed twice and i've lost faith in it.
The R value of this is more like 1.8 - I sometimes can't help but laugh at what sellers say. According to trekology (who I do like), this pad is good, on its own to minus 17 degrees Celsius and that's an absolute joke 😂
No way is that going to be a 4.5 or 5 R rating. Not even close. Trekology stuff completely sucks especially the UL80! (if it doesn't puncture after 3 uses and you actually get to use it). The 140 is way too thick to hold such a high R rating (thicker the mat the more cold air your body has to heat up). Trekology are lying through their teeth, there's a reason why their stuff is cheap. Buy cheap buy twice.
Who knew £50 would be the budget option. When I started camping in the 80’s anything more than a rollmat was a luxury. 😁😁

My pleasure Malcom. Sleep well!
BTW, I've found it to be most comfortable when it's slightly under inflated. As it holds on to you better. 👍

I use a thing called the lite AF mat for non slip purposes, look a few videos back, there is a video on it with info on where to get them.
As a side sleeper, this looks perfect. Ordered myself one this morning as my Gelert £12 mat isn't cutting it ;) Thanks for the review mate.
My pleasure mate, hope you like it, I’m out on mine again tonight 👌
And every advert in this was for the competition lol, glad you liked it. Jury's out for me still as I need to trial it some more.

yeah the extra width really makes a difference for side sleeping. I've used it again since this video and its fast becoming my favourite mat.
You’d have been freezing without the foil mat.
@@dustinrobinson58 yeah. That's why I had one underneath. I would have been freezing otherwise.

just got this to go with my msr elixir 2 looking forward to trying it out

yeah for short walk camps its worth it I think. super comfy!
Hi, can you use an external pump to pump it up faster?
Yea, I use my tiny pump sometimes.
@@CampLifeBushcraft can you recommend a pump please
I have this one, which is a great little pump for air mats.

Great video and a good mat nice price I'll ask the wife if she could buy me one looks fantastic and comfortable thanks Dan.
cheers Andrew, I used it again on the weekend with no issues. slept very well.
It's a great mat for sure. It's got loads of great reviews. If I did not already have sleeping mat overload i would get one for sure.
yeah I seem to have as many mats as tents these days. I can't help it, iv'e got problems! ; )

Just gotta make sure it's not perched over anything that can puncture it 😊👍
Bought it, started to deflate during the night after 2 weeks of use. (takes 5h)
Any ideas what the weak point is so I can fix it in the field?

That looks like a bargain, if the r value is as good as you say that would do me for winter as my klymit insulated isn't cutting it in the winter
they bill it as 3 season, so I'd say its on a par with the klymit mat.
for very cold winter camping I'd suggest the expedition 9.. but its pricey!

yeah its weirdly short.. that might be to do with the built in pillow I suspect, my head was not on the end which it would be on a flat mat
