OK now for real: You teach the way one is expected to be taught at Berklee, G.I.T. or Juilliard. By that i mean i feel like i get the opportunity to be there and being allowed to catch up with what was never possible for me. Studying Jazz Concepts presented in a fun, educational and especially understandable way. Eternal gratitude. You are a phenomenal teacher. Greetings from Germany, Chris
You hit a perfect spot between entertaining and pedagogical with these improvisation videos. I can't stress how much I've learned from your system; but not only that -- I feel very inspired to play and keep practicing with your videos, thank you!
I've been taught triad pairs before, and what you've done is take an exercise and make it into music. I've been working on this for a month, and continue to find incredible value each time I work on it. In my sextet, we just started working on Tom Harrell's "Terrestris" which is ... triad pairs! Glorious triad pairs! I have this sudden and immediate insight into a tune I just discovered. My musical skill has taken a huge leap because of this inspiring teaching you created - THANK YOU!
I absolutely love this! As a classical trained musician, I have no Idea how to improvise. Thank you so much for showing the sheet music in your video (and for download)! This is exactly what I was looking for!
With this one video I've absorbed so much more information on how to create interesting lines on my sax, my keyboard and marimba solos! The way you express the emotional component and how it relates to the specific triad pairs and rhythmic combinations makes so much sense to me, I feel like it's starting to open the door to the next level of jazz improvisation understanding for me! Instantly subscribed!
Yesss! This is what I call knowing how to take advantage of audio and video editing resources for educational purposes! very good! our pioneer hero Jamey Aebersold would have loved to have had all these facilities in his time! Congrats, and thank you! Warm regards from Brazil 😊
It's late at night here in a little African village, and I've wondered into the advanced musical landscapes, bizarrely feeling like a traveler from Bradbury's Martian Chronicles, experiencing a coruscation of sublime titillation.
Amazing work, well done. I just bought the product. Doing triad pairs and lines over various standards, going outside, etc would be something else I would buy.
Brilliant, brilliant. Thank you for so many great ideas. I am in awe. *Edit to say:* Video format and editing and quality is absolutely superb. Even down to the little static in the voiceover.
This is brilliant, Nick!! Your method is both fun and effective. Keep up the wonderful work. I would love to see you make a video on simple ideas to play "outside" for short phrases using arpeggios (dominants and/or diminished). This has always challenged me. I hear beautiful passages in lots of music where the soloist steps outside on an arpeggio and it sounds awesome!
Saludos a John Surman...
This is awesome, well executed. Once in a while I come back to one of your exercises that I LOVE to practice , the harmonization of major and three minors diatonicly using I IV V. Thanx Nick, thank you man.
Firstly that was amazing, with great editing. I was thinking, maybe you could show the notation of the line about to be played about 2 seconds before it actually plays so that those cats whom can sight-read like machines could play along. It ain't me, but it's an idea.
Very good, a little confusing that it switched from the Fmin in the explanation (original key) and the notation is in Gmin. Truly awesome technique regardless...
I _thought_ it sounded like the notation was in a different key! I was trying to play along and it didn't sound right! Is there some place I can find these exercises in Fm?
this is one of the most complete and amazing sounding exercises I have found on TH-cam
Agreed. Its fantastic.

I know! I just want to go pick up my instrument now!
I agree 100%. I am salivating here, guitar in hand. Thank you!
Well done. Great tune, great descript, and simple mapping true to Hancock colorings
the quickest easiest cure for scalitis that simultaneously brings depth to scale knowledge, awesomely done as usual.
Why thank you Jazz Duets. You're a gentleman and a scholar.
Solid stuff as always Nick!! 👍

The only educational video where you dance while you learn. The group of 5 in 16th and triplet are sooo groovy.
Thanks !

Deep respect Nick!
I always come back to this 👍

I'm not even a sax player (not anymore at least) and this is one of the best vids I've seen to break that stale improvising plateau

Tough to find thoroughly useful jazz lessons on TH-cam... Well done!
Really knocks me off! Far away from my skills, full of wonder and promises - keeps me exploring these dimensons. Thx.
Very nice introduction to improvization and somehow to coltranian style
Mindblowing yet so simple stated. The explanation itself is art. Congratulations!
what a lovely soprano tone
Nick you have a great tone and play your soprano very well. Excellent. Thank you for the great lesson.

Excellent and fun ... what more could you want!
Sick! On this tune I usually superimpose major triads over the chords to give it an “outside” sound.
Can u elaborate a little bit more? If u want to :)

One of my favorite standards! Thanks for this!
Amazing work, well done. I just bought the product. Doing triad pairs and lines over various standards, going outside, etc would be something else I would buy.

Way above my skill set, but great lesson 👍🏼
Beautiful arranging!
Is there an explanation as to how you have selected these particular triads over each chord? Thanks for the lesson!
There are usually a couple of triads that occur naturally in each chord scale; thats how he's choosing!
Thank you!! You're an amazing teacher.
Haaaa :D
As always, it's such a groovy presentation of the stuff, so it's unreal to stop playing this exercises!
Thank you for such a great job, Nick!
Jesus is Lord..... This is great stuff, thanks a lot for sharing and making it in Bb. This is The best triad pair lesson ever...
Firstly that was amazing, with great editing. I was thinking, maybe you could show the notation of the line about to be played about 2 seconds before it actually plays so that those cats whom can sight-read like machines could play along. It ain't me, but it's an idea.

The only word I can use now is: awesome!!!
It says nicely on 2:09 that this was notated for Bb instruments (Soprano and tenor sax, Bb trumpet etc.)
Very clear explanations , thanks a lot
Great! Than's! I'm Brazilian!
