  • Today, we'll take a look at a knife that's pretty neat, and has a refreshing sense of humor, but where you'll pay a bit of a price to get it: The Finch Knives Runtly.

There is a striking lack of sheepsfoot/warchliff style knives. Unless you are skinning deer a curved tip is much less useful.
If you've never used one should try it. Youll likely never go back to a clumsy drop point again . this type of blade sits under your index finger and feels like an extension of your fingertip. Very useful.

It's easy for people to call this blade shape a box cutter. But there is a very good reason they use the same shape as a box cutter. Nothing and I mean nothing will penetrate with more force and contact than this blade shape and it's very much useful outside of a box cutter scenario. Think yojimbo

This knife hits me the same way fashion watches do, in that all the focus is put on appearance. You have some fantastic or interesting looking watches using some of the cheapest movements available. Here you have a knife with some very interesting styling but it's missing the quality materials and the refinement. It all feels very James Brand-ish in that the idea of the brand is what's being marketed rather than anything they sell.

Yes..I have this Runtly in "Yellow-Belly" G-10....and yes ...it's overpriced...DEFINITELY...but there is a VERY cool quality to the knife in-hand (it’s made by Bestech and they excel at small knife manufacture: Engine & Goblin)...and everytime I look at it I smile....so the smile factor allows me to overlook the price in this instance...🙃

Even though I'd prefer the blade to be clean, I think the nailnicks serve an alternate function - similar to wood, they have an association with traditional knives, acting as a pacifier of sorts.

Looks like Civivi hired ADV and decided to randomly double their normal asking price.
EDIT: Wait.... N690, G10 and steel liners, made in China. Im the absolute last person to say "this knife is only worth X dollars because i arbitrarily decided" but this is up there with that $350 1.5 inch benchmade Ti framelock.... As hard as i try to understand it, i just cant see where theyre getting that price from.
If im understanding the current market, firearm companies are now making quality knives, so watch makers are jumping in to put their trash in the slot they formerly occupied.
This is what happens when we keep buying every generic flipper thats thrown at us, anyone with basic understanding of CAD and a contact in china wants their piece of the ridiculous pie that weve baked.

I give credit for trying something new... But honestly between the nail nicks, ergos, color, crazy stupid price, I wouldn't pay over $79.99 for this and even then...... Eh.
    Quite unimpressive.
Honestly for 99% of actual knife users I'd recommend the D2 Rat 2 over this at.. What 20% of the cost? 25%?i just don't see this knife having a reason to exist.

Woah, N690, and what? Plastic scales? G10? For that price?
The little logo is cool, I agree with you there. I actually don't mind the blade shape. It's just, comparing the materials and price here to something from Kizers budget line, I mean, there really isn't any comparison. Kizer all day...
80 bucks seems to be more of a match in my book. Hell you can get SO many great knives at their current price point, just like you said...

i heard they are made by qsp. remember when the qsp penguin came out and people raved about it and its $30. that is the worst knife if ever bought. this knife looks like its really similar construction and is $140. the polished liners look really cheap just like the qsp. i find it insane people can even recommend these overpriced knives. my spyderco manix 2 is $125. even a para3 lightweight is $100 and way better. usa made. civivi has the right price points. the odium is $52 and looks 10 times better. china is known to cut corners. the bearings in the finch 1929 are the smallest ive ever seen in a knife. seems like cheap swap meet knives with a high price. i feel like if you are willing to spend $140 on a knife you’re definitely willing to spend a bit more. ace biblio is $175 with m390 and micarta. way more knife for a little more.

  • @LIE4ME

    • @KNOCkAROUNd511

I personally like the knife. I own two versions of the Runtly. I have been using this knife on my fly fishing trips which are about 4 to 5 per week and it has performed very well. Never once has it wanted to slip out of my wet hands or while using it for other tasks. The knife feels like a top shelf knife. It definitely does not feel like a cheap. I know and have meet a whole lot of self proclaimed men that brand themselves as a bad ass that carry crap knives that they call badass and only use them to open mail. In my 38 years of knife collecting I have learned that people that criticize and put Islam products that they have not tried are just insecure, insensitive, and narrow minded. This little knife doesn't take itself so seriously and yet it functions and looks good. I like different. I see and respect where the designer took the time to come up with an idea of how to produce something different in a market where products seem to get stale and look the same most of the time.

Having see some of their other offerings, like the 1929, I think they're going for a super high fit n finish, cool design, with moderate budget materials. I like the Runtly, particularly the one with red scales and black blade, but I feel like the Finch Model 1929 is a nicer looking knife at a better price--which is the one I ended up buying. I would love to see Nick do a review of the Model 1929. They're coming out with one called Holliday, a 1850's western themed knife named after Doc Holliday, which looks pretty nice in the photos. I might pick that one up when it comes out.

I see the same smile in its design you do, and it kinda makes me happy. It has to be in the yellow.
I do think you called it about right though Nick, at $60 I'd have snapped it up for the fun, at $80 - $100 I'd have thought about it. At 140 I don't think I will. A better steel would probably tip me over the edge, but for that price I'd still want to handle it first, (I have kinda big hands).
    Still, it *is* cute. 😆

I get that they're trying to go for the traditional look, but if you're not going to put a nail nick on it, why have that hump sticking up over the scales? Why not just make a slimmer, longer blade? The price for the specs are a lot more reasonable than the Runtly though.

    • @Ephem13
      @Ephem13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It's an arguable point when the end of the knife is lopped off like that. It hits the sheepsfoot idea of spine parallel to the edge but lacks the rounded tip to prevent accidental piercing. On the flip side it lacks the continuous spine radius like a true wharncliffe but does have the fine tip.
I will note that in recent years, knives of this style tend to be called wharncliffe or modified wharncliffe based on intended usage rather than any physical descriptor.
