The small schools with legit point guards ALWAYS win their first game. This Santa Clara team, Davidson with Curry in '08, and Lehigh with CJ McCollum in 2012 are good examples.
Except Curry and McCollum were two guards in college. Nash plays 2 for most of this game. But all those wins were amazing. Especially Lehigh over Duke.
I saw this game live when I was a kid. Obviously it was the first time I'd heard the name Steve Nash. Even though he was clearly a special player, I never would've thought he'd have been capable of having an MVP career. Or even all-star for that matter. He really reminds me of Bobby Hurley. I know Nash was bigger, but I still wonder if Hurley could've had similar NBA success if not for the car crash. Never likely would've thrived with the Kings, but if he found a stable environment on a team with a few big stars (with a coach who understood his unique talents), he could've shined.
Now 30 years later Arizona lost to another 15 seed and were the first to do it twice as a 2 seed, but also the first of two teams to lose to a 15 seed twice overall since Missouri lost to Norfolk State in 2012 followed by losing to the same Princeton team that beat Arizona
Six field goals the entire second half, mostly by Mills, one of the baskets by accident. TWO field goals in the final 15 minutes or so after Mills 4th foul.
To be honest, Steve Nash didn’t do that well in this game. Had a couple nice dimes, then hit 6 crucial free throws at the end. It really was a good team effort by Santa Clara, and a choke job by Arizona

Don’t forget Earl Boykins in 96 and Eric Maynor in 2007

Hurley was nowhere near as good as Nash. Even if he had not had the accident he would have never reached that level.

Nash became an Arizonan hero several years after.

Princeton must've watched this video.
At least Arizona learned from this and would never lose to a 15 seed again.
Why did Nash come off the bench?

There are no beaches in Santa Clara.
@@therainmakerinsider It's probably unfair but here in Texas we call any dude from California with a flock of seagulls haircut a surfer.
