Sowing Poppies, Making Sweet Pea Trellises, Planting Snapdragons & Scabiosa // Northlawn Flower Farm

  • Today I'm direct sowing poppies, making sweet pea trellises and planting snapdragons and scabiosa. The poppies I'm sowing today are Lilac Pompom Breadseed Poppies. Shirley, Breadseed, and California poppies should be directly sown on the soil surface 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Keep the seed bed moist until germination occurs. Iceland poppies take a bit more work. They need to be sown inside in late summer, planted out in fall, overwintered as a baby plant, and then they will bloom in spring.
I like to make sweet pea trellises out of bamboo rods. I just use yarn to secure the top together. I like to soak my sweet peas in lukewarm water for 1 hour before planting them in 36 cell trays. Pinch out the center to encourage branching and more blooms.
I planted Costa Apricot Snaps and Grandma's pincushion flower in the raised bed. Before planting I added an inch or two of compost. I space both of these plants at 9x9 inches. They will need to be netted.
I hope you have a great day out in the garden!

Yes please talk about daily gardening chores! I need this, you save me an immense amount of time to remind me of the correct planting tips each year. I don't always remember the little things and with your videos I turn on, I can cook, clean and don't have to read up, as you are doing that for me. Thank you very much! Keep them coming!

Learned a lot from you. God I wish I were Younger and had more strength for gardening for it’s my joy and one of my purposes in life.
Without nature, flowers in the garden and music and a faithful dog-pet and magical cats, what would life be like?
I’m blessed with these gifts 🙏💐

I am an experienced gardener but always appreciate your videos and learn from them. I think one thing that is so important for any growing, including flowers, is the timing of planting. I have learned a lot about cool flowers for example and now know that some can be sown in the fall, some planted as little plants in the fall and some require direct sowing or setting out plants in the spring and it can make a big difference in performance and quality. You always do the right thing in saying what zone your are in, so few You Tube gardening channels do that. What you share is often not shown on seed packets or gardening shows so I do appreciate you sharing what you learned sometimes by trial and error. Thank you!

You are just a joy to watch. I'm not comfortable around the human race. I'm better with animals. Seeing Grace with you warms my heart.
I garden on a 1/3 of an acre in Southern California with my little French bulldog next to my side. Although I have 3 teenagers, Huckleberry is my everything. He's a service dog because I am full of mental issues. My point is, humans like you make someone like me feel okay out there.
My garden was featured on a utube channel if you care to watch. The channel is called "Late Bloomer" and the title is "Oceanside Hillside garden". Thank you for giving hope in humans.

I am in upstate western NY (near Lake Ontario) which is also zone 6B and I have learned so much about cool weather seed sowing from you. I ordered Lisa's book last week and although it's a little late to implement a lot of it this year, I will be using it for sure this fall and spring of 2022. Thank you for all the help.

Keep up the good work, you have no idea how many people you help and inspire. Even though I am way far south of you in the mountains of western NC I am in the same zone so I really appreciate the real time videos. I can relate much more to your style of gardening than some of the other TH-camrs because it is on a more manageable scale. And like you, my grandmother and my mom were huge inspirations for me, it just took me a while to follow in their steps. Thank you for all you do, I always look forward to seeing what you are doing in the garden.

OMG! These videos are extremely helpful! I think sometimes you say things in passing but don’t realize you’re teaching. You’re just talking plants! I was just thinking while watching how impressed I am with your knowledge. Specifically, when you talked about spacing I think that’s a huge mystery for people. Not everyone wants to see a ton of sowing and harvesting videos. You have a lot of gardening sisters out here who want to see what interests YOU! Sometimes you can skip the makeup and get in the dirt with us! Love you, Gracie!!! (You can always show more Gracie!)

I just got done telling my boyfriend that we absolutely do not need to buy anything at all, and that we need to discuss every purchase we want to make with each other to keep us (me) accountable. Then we stop to just pick up some dormant oil at a random store that we never go to, and we walked out with dormant oil, two peonies, a water lily and potatoes to plant. I cannot be stopped! I thankfully was able to stop myself when it came to dahlias because I already ordered a million. So is the life of a gardener!

Who needs a pair of new shoes ever so often (I´ve got 2 feet, not 200) or a new piece of jewlery (only two ring fingers here, one occupied already) when instead there are so many seeds and plants and shrubs are calling our names, right? If only my garden would expand a little....The Lilac Pomopm Poppies are a first for me this year, let´s hope for the best. Now I´m on my way in the cellar to search my bamboo canes! More Vlogs please !!! Happy gardening, Hanni.

I learned several things I didn’t know, including poppy types, spacing for hardy annuals and why you should plant flowers together based on space due to netting, etc. It seems obvious, but I had never thought about it that way. oh my! I would have to leave my credit cards in the car too! I have a hard time buying new clothes as well, I am usually calculating how many plants or seeds I could get with that money. The last nursery we visited, Annies Annuals, my husband asked me if I wanted a cart. I told him "no" as I had just a couple things I was going in for. He took one look at my face as I walked in (they carry unusual plants that you can't find at most nurseries) and he walked back to the entrance and picked out the biggest cart they had. He knows me too well. And yes, I filled it. 🤑 There are also pink, white and peach colors of California Poppy, and they are a great food source for certain species of native bees.

Always love your videos. It’s my second year as a flower farmer. I especially enjoy watching you as I’m in PA also. It helps me know if I’m on track with what I’m doing. You’re so knowledgeable and I smile every time I watch one of your videos. You’re definitely spreading joy!

I like both vlog and the informative topics! It’s nice to be able to go back and search for all the info for a particular topic, and the vlogs are somehow both relaxing and motivating :)
