      1984 was the era when It wasn't clear what tech Ed was using. That should be interesting.

    • @Theofanis1000
      @Theofanis1000 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@qua7771 I will agree, because in this particular album everything was done in eddies studio, which he had built by himself and most of us we don't know exactly he used, from common knowledge we know basic things like eventide, H&H power amps, maybe the plexi ed amp, but I think we'll learn for sure in jim's video

      @@Theofanis1000 Jim seems to be good at deciphering what has been disguised in forums, and coming to a accurate conclusion. Not everyone has the resources, or space to experiment on this level. I was fortunate enough to have attended a 1984 concert. Of course, the concert sounded different than the album. If Jim has the time to pursue this, it will certainly be interesting.

    JIm, have you ever thought of profiling your amp, cab and studio setup with a Kemper Profiling Amp? I would pay for that and it would allow others to enjoy maybe 90% of the experience of the elusive "brown sound" without the many caveats of this amplifier and chain setup would entail for us mere mortals. Pleeeeease consider it!! It would be a huge win for all of us who follow your channel and support what you do.

    That intro squeal and the ring on those harmonics at the intro of Panama
    spine-tingling and even more so when there's no other instruments in the background
    I always said no matter how quiet or how loud I listen to Eddie Van Halen play on those early albums he was always on the verge of blowing everything up and you captured that tone perfectly

    By far the most difficult tone of Ed's to cop. Theres so much clarity, sustain, brightness, and warmth... It also sounds LOUD! Rumor was his pickup on Franky was broken and acted like a hum bucking single coil. Panama sounds like that guitar was used...

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, it's a tough one. It's got a lot of fizz in it, but it's still "spanky" I think the coil story is nonsense - That's what happened with the 5150 guitar - one coil didn't read correctly, but still functioned. That story has been verified by Larry Dimarzio and Jim DeCola (who were tasked with "duplicating" that pickup for the EB MM signature guitar). So, I think that coil story has been somehow applied to the Frankenstein, too....but, I don't think that was the case. I'll go through what I'm using when I finish the full 1984 video.

    • @RalphMercuroMusic
      @RalphMercuroMusic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jegauss I thought the coil story originated from whoever documented the guitar at the Fender Custom Shop when they produced those $25k versions of Franky. Either way. REALLY looking forward to this video!

      I read the Dimarzio article which discussed the damaged coil too. I found that adding a variable (hooked to a 500k pot) and partial (with 2.2k resistor) coil split rolled back to 6 or 7 simulates the broken coil tone pretty well

    Do I smell the 1984 Brown Sound Quest coming to a computer near me soon? Lol. Hell yeah, this is great. I saw you in the interview with Dave Friedman, so sweet! Also, I am going to look this up after I say this, but I wonder if Dave was Eddie’s Amp tech on tour or for studio or both? Because the things he was explaining he did to Eddie’s amp sound what Eddie sounded like live but not in the studio; the variac being way down and the tubes biased cold. You’re the only one that I know of on TH-cam that has actually used your brain in regards to hearing Eddie say that depending on venue, he would adjust his variac accordingly (in the early days I’m sure). I can almost guarantee he put the variac down to 65-70V and didn’t think about biasing the tubes considering his method of rewiring his pickup to his potentiometer. Even though the cabs were mic’d on stage at large venues, he probably kept it at 90V to be able to hear it on stage at 90V (I know they use ear pieces today but did they use them then? If so, would Eddie have used them?). It gets so much quieter, for a Plexi lol, at 70V and it’s that brown chunky sound. 💩 lol

      @jegauss  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can find a lot of Mighty Mite necks online. They're very good quality - I think they're still somewhere around $120.00. But, if you're using a Floyd Rose, they may not offer the nut route?? I don't know. Otherwise, look on ebay for a good used one. I did order a $35 from china - it's fine. Nothing wrong with it...I've got it on a regular strat build...hope that helps.

    • @IggyB-Music
      @IggyB-Music 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jegauss that does help a lot.
      I’m kind of a beginner in building guitars so I’m probably not gonna use a Floyd rose and just stick with a vintage fender tremolo. I saw the video where you talked about how the Floyd rose caused a lot of adjustments to be made and since this is one of my first guitar builds, I think I’m gonna take the easier route and get a fender tremolo.
      I’m building this frankenstrat from scratch so it’s been a little difficult finding all the parts to get for an accurate, good quality build. I’m finding some Northern Ash bodies on eBay with the right type of routing for about 115$-170$. I also found a Seymour Duncan JB pickup for around $100. Any other tips on good parts for a Frankie build?

    Which effects did you run for this? EQ, Delay, Reverb? If so which ones?

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Everything is done in post - the EQ is minimal - mics are off the cabinet about 2.5" and one mic is close to the dust cap on the "bright" speaker, the other mic is on the (close to) the suspension ring of the "dark" speaker. Those two speakers are mixed together, favoring the brighter speaker in the final mix. The only other effect is an AMS RMX16 Room Simulator, which is the reverb they had at 5150 at the time. Oh, also using an Ampex MM1200 tape simulation on the main buss. Because they either had the 3M M56 machine and/or the Ampex MM1200 at 5150 when they recorded 1984. .

    Hi Jim, I'm jumping the gun, but would appreciate your recommendation for a Diver Down pickup.

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure yet - I'm leaning more and more to the '78 for almost everything, post VH 1. He always gets some clarity in his tone, so I keep moving further from the higher powered pickups - at least on the first 6 albums.

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's going to be the 1984 video, and then after that I have plans to do a "back test video" that will touch on Diver Down, and go backwards thru the albums to layout the exact changes in the setup - they aren't as different as I (used to), or most think.

    • @MontourR
      @MontourR ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jegauss That’s great you’re putting out 84 next, the tone on that album is just unreal probably the greatest guitar tone ever recorded along side the guitar tone on fair warning. I have tons of questions concerning the signal path, load box, etc… but I’ll wait for you to reveal the treasure 😂 🤟

  • @CentaurusRelax314

    *I should probably ask the expert:*
    Jim, i'm hoping you have some insight into this, but maybe you're only working with the appropriate amps for this tone. But, if i wanted to get as close as possible to early Brown Sound with a pedal into a Deluxe Reverb... do you have a suggestion? I have the MXR 5150, which beat the La Grange. But, i don't really like the 5150 very much (into that amp/speaker). I recently bought a Wampler Pantheon for other tones, and i love it-seems to be perfect for a Deluxe Reverb. So i thought i'd try the Wampler Pinnacle v2. The other consideration was the Carl Martin Panama. Thoughts? I know the amp/speaker is a compromise. I have a Kemper with good EVH profiles, but i would love something that is 'satisfying' when i'm using the real amp.

    • @tanneryordan
      @tanneryordan ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nothing with the name EVH is going to get you in the ballpark of roth era tone. it’s simply not designed for it, so i would definitely throw away your 5150 overdrive 😂
      the carl martin stuff is highly regarded. it’s definitely a good start. the right speaker will take you very far. it may be heresy to put a greenback into a deluxe reverb, but i think you’ll be happier with some plexi-style distortion (like i said, NOT EVH which is completely different) and the right speaker

    • @CentaurusRelax314
      @CentaurusRelax314 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tanneryordan Right. I was considering a Greenback for the Deluxe, but then i got the Wampler Pantheon, and that made me happy with gainier tones. So i was hoping Brian Wampler kinda has his pedals suited for Fender combos.... I just put the 5150 up for sale and was going to just try the Pinnacle-another 'hail mary.' I was interested in the Panama earlier, but sorta gave up on brown sound pedals for this amp before finding some joy with the Pantheon.

    • @tanneryordan
      @tanneryordan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CentaurusRelax314 remember that marshalls were based on fenders. make the amp break up a little bit add that plexi-style distortion pedal and you’ll be fine. i noticed pete thorn does that for his distortion pedal reviews and it always sounds better than just straight clean with distortion

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  ปีที่แล้ว

      Tanner is dead on....that Deluxe is one of my favorite amps. I'd just hit the front end of it with a bit of a boost, dial the voltage way down with a variac (as far as it lets you go, and the amp still operates), and then turn it up all the way. Honestly, that's the key. You may find that you don't even need anything to hit the front-end harder. The other problem with trying to get the VH sound, is that a good part of it is moving air. It requires some volume. It's not crushing volume (with the variac), but it's a level that would blend nicely with a live drummer - so, it's still kinda loud. Trying to get "the tone" at bedroom level is next to impossible. Not to say that you can't get it close, it's just never going to "nail it." That's the battle that we've all been fighting for years. The only way to get there is to turn the amp full up. Hope that helps...good luck!

    Hi ! I noticed in the intro you are really good at getting a similar quality to the palm muting as Ed.
    I really struggle to get that sound, I found that I need to palm mute but also somewhat keep a light touch to get that sound.
    Something else I'm struggling with: do you play the bass note twice or only once ? Depending on what day it is and how I'm hearing it, I either hear 2 bass notes or only 1. I sometimes wonder if there is a misleading thing to it: do you let the bass note ring out and then mute it before playing it again, which creates the illusion of 2 bass notes while it's actually only a lightly palm muted note that you let ring out a bit longer ?
    It's really hard to get these bass notes to sound the way Ed does it, and you seem really good at it ! Please give some info about it !

      Thank you! Details will be coming out in my Quest for the Brown Sound - 1984 video. If you've watched my previous Brown Sound videos, you'll get a general idea of what I'm running - but, it's essentially the same thing Ed ran. It's a '68 plexi Marshall (clone), stock, except for the minor anomalies that Ed's '68 had - variac turned down to 68 volts, Marshall 4x12 with 25 watt blackbacks and 60 ft. of guitar cable. No pedals. There is some minor eq-ing that happens in post, and a bit of reverb, compression and Eventide Harmonizer added...that's it.
