    I stopped listening to music in the car about a year ago for this reason- driving forces me to only drive, nothing else. I can be still, practice deep breathing, and be in silence. It’s very peaceful but uncomfortable at first.. I would try it!

      @@mrmoebius again no it really wasn’t I didn’t know who told you that but the practice of forms of meditation and mindfulness have been present in all traditions across the world for thousands of years most of which had never even met a Buddhist before Buddhism just puts emphasis on a specific form of it

    • @mrmoebius
      @mrmoebius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Saber23 Mindfulness, defined as directing attention to the present moment or "space between thoughts", often accompanied by some form of breathing practice is derived directly from Buddhism, be it Zen or Tibetan schools, where it's referred to as shinay or shamata. This is where the modern mainstream understanding of mindfulness comes from, which you can double-check on Wikipedia. Sure, other traditions have some form of contemplation, but to conflate that with mindfulness practice would be intellectually dishonest.

    I totally agree with stillness as the way forward ! I try to go into a zone mode in my wildlife photography where I try and become one with the camera ! The camera just becomes an extension of expression ! But it is difficult to master and it comes from an inner core stillness or platform which you build on ! Still enjoying the Daily Stoic. I must get your latest trying to incorporate more Stoic philosophy in my life ! 👍

    Blaise Pascal meant on the contrary that people were unable to stay home and be pleased, constantly wanted to go out seeking some form of thrill, whilst Seneca craved external peace and quiet in order to focus. They are talking about opposite circumstances, Seneca the outward noise leading to more internal noise, and Pascal the outward stillness leading to focusing on the internal noise, leading to people doing things to avoid it.

    We can be silent and regardless of what we are hearing outside or unvoluntariy inner thoughts, knowing that it is okay to hear them, we can recognize what charges they bring to us, how they make us feel, but also being there without judgement about ourselves.

    I am asking for help here. Since 1993 I have never had one second of quiet. Paradoxically, despite being deaf and wearing $16G hearing aids, I have extreme tinnitus in both ears. It’s a very unpleasant sound, akin to an electrical malfunction. I used to be able to hear it above our motorcycle when we opened it up on the highway. Sitting quietly only makes it louder. Any suggestions? Not medical ones, but from philosophy.

    Ryan Holidays is the McDonald's of philosophy. Easy to consume, not that nutritious but compared to no philosophical reading at all, it suffices. The way he markets himself and the way he writes the books you can tell, it is not work of substance but something meant to sell easy and be absorbed by the everyman. It's not wrong per se, just that I urge all those who want to seek deeper to read other forms of philosophy as well. Descartes, Nietzsche, Epictetus, Machiavelli etc... read widely.
    Ryan Holiday's simplified, modernised, commodified version of stoic philosophy is to philosophy what Panda Express is to Chinese food. Read it, learn what you can, but consider seeking a lot deeper and wider.

    I don't know if anyone watches DragonBall Super or is familiar with DragonBall Z but Goku the main character has a transformation called "Ultra Instinct" which can only be achieved by reaching a level of mental stillness and calm. Goku's previous transformations were obtained through anger and rigorous effort but Ultra Instinct his most powerful form, is achieved through stillness of spirit and mind!
