Hi! Love watching your videos- especially the guitar re-do whatsit ones. I do similar things (but with much cheaper guitars!) I know your a busy man but if you get the chance please have a look at my Instagram photos (munnsthemerciless) I have a lot of fun trying to make guitars look like what I want them to look like In my head! Keep up the good work!
Andy, I enjoyed the commercial almost as much as the video, it was hilarious! I think the worst way to remove the paint would be with a phillips screwdriver.
Wow I would have guessed it would be at least a 3 piece top. The worst way to remove paint from a guitar would be by cat. It would take forever with those tiny claws.
Andy, you know as well as I that the only real way to remove the paint is to lay the guitar in a slow moving stream so that the current naturally erodes it away. Cheers!
I do have a question though, what year range do you like for studio les Paul's? I'm thinking 96-2003 is safe. Do you agree? Good wood years and all that stuff.
Thanks man. I will look at those years. In case you missed my reply earlier I bought a hoodie because apparently the mug didn't want to come the US. I don't blame the mug. I don't want to be here either.
TheGuitarGeek I will. I should have it in a couple weeks I believe. Between may1st and 6th. I've always heard great things from the 90's and early 2000's. After being burned multiple times by recent Gibson I feel it's time to buy older. Then part of me says wait till next year for the "new guy" Gibson guitars to be released. A even bigger part of me says buy both because I can't wait for the new ones. So, I have about 1500 bucks to spend and I'm gonna go hunting this weekend. I should be able to snag a good wood era studio or even maybe a classic for that. Maybe a standard if I get lucky who knows. It's so scary buying anything older online though. I enjoy the videos. Really well done. Glad to show some support.
My suggestion would be to get some really good burnt toast with a liberal coating of orange marmalade (preferably Scottish with whisky) and give it some solid elbow grease - it'll come out a treat. Failing that use a small hedgehog.
Use napalm to remove the paint next time ! It takes longer but it's worth the wait .just check out stew mac and their wonderful napalm paint removal videos cheers
I think we all misunderstood what Jimi was trying to do when he played with his teeth. He was obviously attempting to remove the paint! (quite poorly!)
I have a 91 studio, it is an amazing instrument. Even has nitro finish. I can see the one pc. top. It just doesn’t have a flame top, and no binding. Other than these two things. It’s the same as the standard. Amazing to play, sounds amazing. The only guitar in my collection that is not for sale.
Brilliant. Loads of patience required & would love to see how you ho about repainting and finishing the guitar. Any upgrades planned on the original hardware?
Whilst the principal that you apply to stripping a guitar is fundamentally correct, I think that the application lacks... vision. It's just slightly pedestrian. A little vanilla. Obviously, the most efficient way to strip a guitar is to blast it for a few seconds with a flame-thrower and then scrape off the paint with the single, well practice slash of a samurai sword.
Step 1: Find a cliff adjacent to a tree. Step 2: Tie rope to said tree. Step 3: Tie rope to expensive guitar. Step 4: Throw the guitar off the cliff (be sure to use some force!), then reel it back in. Step 5: Rinse and repeat until all paint is removed.
My '97 LP Studio has a 3 piece cap - and it has a wine red transparent finish. With lots of nasty little mica like inclusions in the finish which I didn't spot till long after I bought it. I would be very surprised if your black LP had a single piece top. Did Gibson ever make an LP with a single piece top? What always did surprise me was that, as far as I know, it is only very recently that Gibson started using two piece mahogany bodies. I was always amazed that they managed to find single piece mahogany body blanks even for the cheaper guitars. I guess they can't any more. And acetone seemingly swiftly followed by the heat gun - you do live dangerously..
2000 grade paper would be hard work but very safe. I’m surprised how good the maple looks, I’m always suspicious of what’s underneath painted guitar tops but that looks quite reasonable. You can’t really expect amazing figuring on a cheap Gibson.
I think that the worst way to strip the paint off of a guitar would be to glare sternly at it until the paint just slid off and went to hide somewhere. I've tried this method but I'm not stern enough.
I was actually surprised how effing thick this nitro laquer finish was, so that's why it's hard to find old Gibsons with the finish worn off to the wood, Fenders must have had a lot thinner finishes.
Worst way to strip a guitar is by raising it with low self-esteem (& too great a reliance on external validation.) 90% of guitars that end up in stripping have had this kind of early life, or were imported from Russia.
I only watch these videos for the embedded commercials...at least I now know a way to drink and not get my hands wet. Oh and the guitar isn't looking half bad either!! Cheers Andy!!
The wrong way to remove paint from a guitar would be by licking. However, a communal guitar lick* might be a useful opportunity for fostering social cohesion in a small group. *no pun intended. 👅🤨
TheGuitarGeek I did. They wouldn't send me the mug though cause I'm in the US. So, I bought a Guitar Geek hoodie. Idk why I couldn't get the mug. It said it wasn't able to be shipped here. Idk. All good though. I want a black topped Lester with very lightly stained back and sides. I saw it on a 594 and I fell in love. I would be terrified to try this myself though. Your a brave man!!!!
The worst way I can think of to remove paint from a guitar is to simply sand it away - this the finest sanding paper on the market, by hand of course! To remove 3 mm of a solid finish off a top, I guess it'd take months. How many others would think of the same way? I didn't read any other comments yet. Edit: "this the finest"? With the finest!
Always looking forward to a new episode. I hope it turns out as great as the previous one, or even better, because the original condition was much worse on the blue one...
You could drag it behind from a moving car. Or throw it to earth from space and allow the atmosphere to burn off the paint. Just a few idea's I have in my head. Or leave the paint remover on longer to penetrate the paint.
Do another ... this time using only The Force. Record your efforts live. Kudos on the sponsor. They obviously worked way harder on the editing than you did #OnTheBench ;o)
Take a bucket full of petrol, put a guitar in open safe environment, empty the bucket on the guitar, make sure there is a small stream of petrol few feet away from the guitar, use zippo lighter and make sure you hear the clik noise before you ignite. Benefit is that apart from maple you will a have torrefied mahogany (especially neck), something that cannot be found easily. :D
Removing guitar paint is easy. Run hot water in the bathtub, a little baking soda, and vinegar. Place entire guitar in tub and let it slowly come apart all on its own.

Worst way to remove paint? Why not better ways or different ways to remove paint? Because normally I would start with paint remover, let it soak in for a while, and than use the heat gun. That way you're done so much faster.
Many many years ago and way before youtube or any online instruction videos I used 80 grit sandpaper and a power sander to strip the paint on an Epiphone Les Paul...let me just say I do not recommend this method as in about half a second I'd ripped through the paint AND the laminated maple top
Worst way to remove paint from a guitar - belt sander with 60 grit paper. Well, that's "worst way that I've actually seen it done". I could come up with a lot worse.
I will be here answering comments for the next 30 minutes or so. Come say hi!

The Gospel of Mark I had a similar idea here, but would have gone for the cat fur (without harming the animal, of course).
5000 grit sand paper might take a while but it will be smooth.
Good ok’ hammer and chisel! If it can take the plaster off my garden wall, it’ll certainly deal with that nitro finish on my 2005 standard!

Nice Mick Ronson finish you have now and of course Nitromors applied with the testicles is the only way to remove paint.
You need to leave the acetone on the paint for a while and let it work. The paint will begin to bubble and then removing it will be MUCH easier.
Thanks! I like the misery though..
A light skimming with a chainsaw is always a great go to way for paint removal.
Heat gun is fairly ineffective for removing the paint. You should have use a flamethrower. Well may be next time.
