Exact same thing happened with my Phantom 3 Pro at 4000+ ft.....except the controller also disconnected as well as the app-crash. I never recovered the connection until 4 minutes later when it began it's decent above me. I agree with you 100%....... DJI has beautiful software in this respect ! Very nice video here btw ! Fly safe, Friend !
Very good advice ... a pre-flight checklist is so important. And it must be followed each time. If I might add, I turn off every app on iPhone, shutdown/restart, (to flush memory and CPU) and max volume so I’m sure to hear “home point has been recorded”. And, I do look at the home-point map each flight. Very beautiful filming, and smooth control.

Extremely Good Video ! Beautiful editing ! Most importantly, the fact that you pointed out the RTH settings. That is so important, yet so overlooked by people. Again, great footage and great video !!
It happens to me in August 2018, when I travelled to Turda, Romania. In my case, when my Mavic Pro returns, it travelled in a straight line towards the home-point, but the landscape along the path are peaks and cliffs higher than the set altitude in the drone. I watched with despair as it slowly going to hit the wall of the cliff, but luckily the obstacle avoidance suddenly kicks-in! It just keeps hovering in front of the cliff, trying to get through the straight line. The signal was still too weak because I was behind the huge cliff, then the remote control becomes too noisy because both batteries of remote and drone are running low! I suddenly lose hope of recovering it, but I don't know what happens, I notice the drone suddenly hover to its side and avoid the cliff then continue to follow the home point. So now, I still have it and ready for the next adventure! :)
What a beautiful area!! I can't see how people can just "think" all this beauty came from nothing...Wow enjoy the area you live or have traveled to ! thank you for the video
Wow mate , I held my breath. I’m pleased for you it all worked out ok in the end. I’ve been in that situation with all my dji drones . And the most important thing to do, is stay calm. As you said calibration is the main thing , and RTH is the key factors . Dji are brilliant for technology. Bye the way , brilliant footage mate . Good on ya .
well done. Thanks! I get my Mavic delivered tomorrow. Been watching you tubers for months and many experienced guys have crashed. Flying over water is soon risky. Hope I've learned from others mistakes. I will heed your commentary.
Bigfish92084 Bigfish - appropriate name for droning over water :) you can get a good eye on fishing spots and see the buggers swimming around. Even some vids of tuna fishing via drone :) Start somewhere shallow, calm, a pond (so you can swim if need to to recover) start at a height and once the nerves settle take it a little lower if needed. Be very ready to FLY as the sensors can cause drift when low over water- you can turn theses off, but the drone will drift a lot more. Water is great!
Drone Journey hey Drone Journey- the near misses are a good mix of fun and fear :) my nerves every time... I laugh on the way home though (if I get it back)
I had same experience. My mavic lost signal, i was sure my drone is gone....but few min later i,ve seen it again. Thank you Dji for this amazing feature
Nice clip buddy, I've been there! Challenging to fly there, lot's of trees and hills to block the signal... it did what it was supposed to, good stuff, thanks for the commentary.
Subscribed.....great footage, I'm getting a mavic soon...can you set RTH even higher ? What's it's top setting...thanks for the video going to look at your others...I'm just soaking up mavic videos
Beautiful flight. I've had a couple of WEAK TRANSMISIION SIGNAL errors and AIRCRAFT DISCONNECTED. I'm not sure what to do in that situation. Do you turn off the DJI GO 4 app and then turn it back on?
The second I saw your route and when you dropped down I knew what was coming. A landmass and bunch of trees between you and your expensive drone. Many a drone has crashed this way, especially without enough RTH altitude. . It is good you share this. It is important to keep radio line of sight with your drone. If you had increased your altitude you may have kept connection. Recently I have been flying in mountains and am very aware of this phenomenon. The mountains are 10, 000 feet high so no RTH Altitude setting will help. The safest place to fly is from the top of the mountain.
Really nice flight and the video with music was nicely done. Kind of like the music a lot and keep on playing for more than 10 times. Try searching this track but the nearer track match was Sun Soft from Sibracco. Can you tell me the sound track originally from?
I lost connection on my new Mavic the other day. It was within los. About 2-300 meters away and about 90 meters high. It happened on my very first flight and on the second battery. The relief was huge when it returned to home point after about 5 nervous minutes!
Mike Santis I mean ehhh , when I first started flying I put it on beginner mode so I could only fly within a radius of 75 meters hahah but I eventually worked my way up there as I did not want to get too cocky over flying it far
Great video and tips! I'm slowly working my way up to flying that far out of site the last time i did that I crashed into some weeds going backwards! Luckily I wasn't over water at the time.
Great footage by the way. Great video as an instruction. I was wondering is the RTH heigh set as over the sea level or over the home point? I presume the latter...
Hi Nu Vu, thanks for sharing this video. I am about to purchase a Mavic Pro and watching this video makes me nervous as I don't have an y flying experience (a newbie). The drone supposed to have a 7Km range and at 1350m this happened? Have you ever worked out why it happened? Also, a question, if you recorded your Home position and your drone lost connection, does that mean the drone will get to the height you have set it (in this case 60m) and try to return to the recorded Home position by itself? Thanks.
Hi, Lovely Video and just made rthe switch to DJi after last year losing a Q500 and the New H. Just getting to grips with the DJI App. Ok whats the map App i see pop up. Also, nice thast you kept your cool and did your checks, ive had some scary flights like that.
Can someone explain why the lost of signal causes the transmitter to black out? Since there's still battery life, can't DJI improve on the firmware E.g showing some instructions on the monitor on what to execute from there on. The apps. should not crash or need to be rebooted if the firmware is advance enough. I hope DJI can look into this and make improvements on these areas. By the way, I love your video shot with the beautiful landscape of mother nature. Cheers
Your footage is so fantastic. Gorgeous colors, well controlled movements...I'd love to know your gimbal/camera settings. One of the nicest vids I've seen today while surfing TH-cam
When you lost control, did you try hitting the pause button or the accend stick? Not sure if that would have worked or not, but I just flew my Mavic Pro Zoom and had the RTH set to hover. Then I shut off the controller so it would lose signal. It just stopped where it was and hovered. I then turned the RC on again and was able to gain control and fly it back. When you lost signal and rebooted, I guess you had no control of anything. OK. I just realized what your talking about here. If you'd have set the RTH altitude higher, you wouldn't have been so close to the trees, especially since you were out of control completely. Good thing it all turned out well. By the way, that was some beautiful footage of a beautiful place. Marc T.
Kenneth Brudzinski hi Kenneth - not really, well I am sure there is but it's not greatly explained in the manual - I may make a quick video to cover what I think is important. Thanks - great suggestion
Thanks for information. The test I want to do is with return home on I want to be able to land far away and lose radio contact but it not try and return home. Hopefully if you use the app to land it will not try and return home with a low battery and crash like many videos show. There should be a way to land it without it trying to return home. I want return home on for other reasons but in case of low battery and high winds I may need to land far away.
When u say that you rebooted the app, does that mean you literally cut your cellphone off and back on our just closed out the djigo4 application and the reopened it?
lanschl thanks so much for the nice comments :) still learning but starting to figure out some settings. I am using Final Cut Pro for this edit - I am sure the font was called "3D BASIC" Please take time to subscribe - many more videos on the way. Thanks so much
DAXimusTT hi DAX, thanks mate for taking the time to watch. The settings for this were (2.7k - 30fps - cloudy white balance - cinelog colour profile) - polar pro series filters make a good difference to footage captured I think.
Andrew Neger hi Andrew thanks mate. This video was all manual setting, cloudy white balance, polar pro filter, ISO 100, 30fps, shutter speed 60 (the double rule) I plan on doing another upload to cover best settings for video soon if you want to keep an eye on my channel.
Very interesting video and super smooth flight. I always dread if something like this happens. Thanks for the important information and lovely footage. You certainly have my sub 😀👍👍👍
I always set my loss of signal command to "Hoover" because I thought once it loses signals, 1 or 2 steps forward would be enough to gain connection again. I guess it's a little more complicated then that. Anyway, where are the kangaroos?
Leandro Martins thanks for watching :) still looking for the kangaroos, I am sure I'll find some hopping around and chase them in a future video. I check my surroundings- hover is a great option in open space, over dry land etc - I wouldn't want a hover to happen over water or at a great distance, this could be hard to recover from.
Yes line of sight is important. Its not about getting closer its about getting higher. I keep in mind the further away I fly the higher I get is my rule of thumb so to speak.
Nicely put together vid and demo Nu Vu.-I imagine when it appeared back into view it was a beautiful sight. One question about the camera-Can you extract single images from a recording?? I believe you can on the GoPro cameras. This would be really handy for stitching panoramics together-no need to stop video recording, and take single shots.Rob-UK
styles2000bc you can capture still from video - I haven't done this yet. The quality would not be great. You would be better off to take a few dedicated photos while up there. The remote has two easy buttons - 1 for photo - 1 for video - you just need to quickly stop recording vid to take the photo.
Well put together video and good to see you made it back - always a heart starter. The problem you have with this video is that it is infringing CASA Regs and if you had not done so then you would not have had this scare, Maybe a lesson here for you and others..................
Gun Pilot great advice, thanks. Well aware of local regulations and always fly within the laws. I could maintain vision this whole flight, it dipped behind a hill a little I guess, so I quickly brought it back. No crazy 😜 flying here. Thanks for watching
I have only had my Mavic a week and flew it for the first time yesterday. could you please expand on the CASA regulation part? I am in the UK and not sure whether we have CASA here? if there is something that will help me i am all ears.
Carl - Looks like CASA is Australia's aviation authority... every country has their own different regulations. Looks like this applies to you in the UK: www.caa.co.uk/Consumers/Model-aircraft-and-drones/Flying-drones/
You have breached the VLOS regulation 101.073 Operation must generally be within visual line of sight Unmanned aircraft must be operated within visual line of sight (1) A person commits an offence of strict liability if: (a) the person operates an unmanned aircraft; and (b) the aircraft is not operated within the person’s visual line of sight. Penalty: 50 penalty units. Exception-CASA approval (2) Subregulation (1) does not apply if: (a) the person holds an approval under regulation 101.029 to operate the unmanned aircraft beyond the person’s visual line of sight; and (b) the conditions (if any) imposed on the approval are complied with. Note: A defendant bears an evidential burden in relation to the matter in subregulation (2): see subsection 13.3(3) of the Criminal Code. Meaning of operated within visual line of sight (3) An unmanned aircraft is being operated within the visual line of sight of the person operating the aircraft if the person can continually see, orient and navigate the aircraft to meet the person’s separation and collision avoidance responsibilities, with or without corrective lenses, but without the use of binoculars, a telescope or other similar device. The main point in this reg is that : you have to prove to CASA in court ("A defendant bears an evidential burden") that you could fully understand the ORIENTATION of the RPA at that distance (and its not possible - I fly RPAs, including a Mavic for business purposes and very familiar with what you could/could not see at that distance). (Remember each single penalty point is equal to $155,60c so this flight could well cost you $7,780). Now maybe you will realise just how serious an offence CASA sees this. There is no way after 500 metres that you can determine the "ORIENTATION" of the RPA without the use of the RC video screen. You flew out more than 1km and your telemetry on the video clearly shows this. This video supplies CASA all the evidence they need to take you to court and successfully prosecute you. And remember, at ay time someone could just use this CASA provided link to inform them of this dangerous and illegal use of an RPA www.casa.gov.au/webform/unsafe-drone-operations-complaint-form Ignore if you will, others won't...................................
great footage. this happend to me the other day all went blank I pressed the return home on the remote height set at 70 metres. about 3 minutes later came hovering over my head such a good feeling to see it. always check them return home settings guys 👍
Yo Mate that was a nail biter. I had to take a nitro pill because I was going into ventricular fibrillation. I was on the edge of my seat. Really scary. I was praying for a safe landing. That was exciting. OK the scenery was way cool. The colors great. I think this convinced me to get a Polarizing Filter set. Good cinema. After that am ready to go get a big bowl of kinkajou stew, it made me hungry.
Omg thank youuu soo much this will help soo much as ive flown my drone out to the point where ive lost connection and lost hope to the point where I thought I wasn’t gonna get it back🥲. This is going to be so handy now omg i cant thank you enough bro🤍🤍☺️.
Nice flight but also remember there is a new setting on the mavic 2.. it always defaults to the setting that says " RTH at height it is at when signal is lost" make sure that is off also as it will not use the rth height you have set
Nice video and good story with a happy ending. But what happens when your drone CAN'T Return To Home? This is what happened to me yesterday. There was a little wind at ground level but nothing the Mavic couldn't handle. Took it up to 160m and wham - without me realising it until 2 or 3 minutes later it hit a 10-15km/h wind which gusted up to 19km/h at times. Forward throttle just slowed it down. Stupidly hitting RTH it announced it couldn't and said "Landing" - right over a very busy highway! Cancelled that quickly, but still could not gain forward control. Too dangerous to bring down. In the end I had to find a landing spot 1km away and after a long 10 minute drive (highway in the way) and 15 minute search I finally had it in my hands again... Phew!
Well from what I saw in the very beginning, and this is a common happening and the reason for it. You did not let the copter sit and hoover for anytime upon takeoff. To gain a proper GPS/signal lock to get its bearings of where it is in the world locked in before flying off.
WOW !!!! Superb Video, Thank-you for the Heads up, I guess GET IT RIGHT Take a deep breath stay calm !!! My husband Michael is the pilot in Command, I am just the spotter his wife, I seem to sometimes get nervous... ;0o,, but keeping calm & pre flight check list & settings !!!!!! Seems key...... We are planning to fly in the mountains of Ellijay Georgia & were told in some places there is no GPS or Cell phone service.... So just doing research if it is possible to fly our Mavic with those conditions????? That is how I happened upon your video... Thanks again for your Beautiful & informative Vid...... Kind Regards, Cindy
would this work with the spark? cause i gotta send mine in cause i lost all signal but had my RTH point set and didn't return 35% battery no wind 260 ft 1060 ft away
Maybe someone can answer my question... if I set my return to home point and I fly it off the side of a cliff would it fly to the set height over point of takeoff or from where it currently is at?
It seemed to be problematic when it had bad signal but then returned to home when it lost signal. Maybe if it's flying odd with weak signal it's just better to turn the controller off and hope for the return to home to kick in straight away.
Mavic Pro is one of the Best drone ever created by DJI, it's a lot more sophiticated and advance than the newer Mavic Mini, Mini2, Mini3, or even Air. Thats the reason why I bought the old 2nd hand Mavic Pro instead of Mini 2.
Great video and a lesson at the same time 👍
Excellent video and great tips. I'll use this when setting up my soon to arrive Mavic Pro, in March. Absolutely beautiful scenery.
Thanks and Cheers!
Curtis Mattingly thanks Curtis
Throughly enjoyable, nice photography, music and.video edit. Scary stuff on LOS!
DOBM thanks so much for watching
impressive can't wait for mine in the mail tuesday !!! played with one all week can't get over how amazing this machine is
Exact same thing happened with my Phantom 3 Pro at 4000+ ft.....except the controller also disconnected as well as the app-crash. I just got my DJI Goggles with the Mavic and I love it!!!
Awesome video. Awesome scenery. Awesome Tips.
The music is what sets it.

Dude, that was awesome!! Great technical content and visuals!
What a beautiful area!! I can't see how people can just "think" all this beauty came from nothing...Wow enjoy the area you live or have traveled to ! thank you for the video
Amazing imagery and editing! Great info provided as well. Nice work

Awesome video mate. Nice tips too. I'll have to remember them for when my mavic arrives 👍🏻
Virtual Reality Oasis take it easy for the first few flights :) bond with it - it is a great toy
Beautiful video, so much better when everything is green and not white like here.
Gunter Behrens where are you Gunter?
Central Alberta Canada
good video and you got it back. I had a near miss like that over water and a return to home flying past a tree. subbed
Nice save mate, looks like a sweet place to fly. Will have to come down sometime with mine.
Jonah Scott where are you Jonah? Maybe I'll come up? :)
Nice clip buddy, I've been there! Challenging to fly there, lot's of trees and hills to block the signal... it did what it was supposed to, good stuff, thanks for the commentary.
Sweet video, also a needed heads up. This video is basic knowledge but, sometimes we need a reminder like this...like me...thanks...

Alan Alan it was 200-300 ,meters and NOT 2300 meters

Outstanding place and camera settings mate !
I hope one day I will trust my Mavic like how you trust yours. Kind of scares me to fly away 2grand and be able to see it.
2 GRAND ! What ! I got mine for 800$
Welcome to Australia......
Piesy001 the land of the gst

Your footage is so fantastic. Gorgeous colors, well controlled movements...I'd love to know your gimbal/camera settings. One of the nicest vids I've seen today while surfing TH-cam
I like the video, it had tech and scenery/ Awesome country
TUGBOAT290 thanks tugboat290
I had a similar issue only I was 700m away and your right. The RTH was set to low and my Mavic mini went through the tree 😩. Awesome video

OMG that comeback save! epic journey! did you attach floating kit to your drone when u flying above water?
excellent excellent. thank you!
RossHasAdrone thanks Ross
Awesome video thanks for the advice 👍🏽
Is there a pre-flight checklist somewhere? Seems important...
Kenneth Brudzinski hi Kenneth - not really, well I am sure there is but it's not greatly explained in the manual - I may make a quick video to cover what I think is important. Thanks - great suggestion
DJI has an app called DJI Pre Flight Checklist. Has checklists for Packing List, Pre Flight, Take Off, and Post flight
There is one in the manuals that come with the mavic
did you look at the transmitter to see if you had connection. TX usually stays connected
Thanks for information. The test I want to do is with return home on I want to be able to land far away and lose radio contact but it not try and return home. Very nice video. The river scenery is beautiful. Where is this?
Scott Holmes hi Scott, this is in northern NSW Australia - not far from a town called Nimbin. Thanks for the comments, very encouraging - cheers!
I'm from the US. I had no idea Australia looked this way. Honestly I thought it all looked like the Mad Max movies.
Scott Holmes wow, seriously? You need to get out more.
an germans all wear lederhosen and live in the alps :-)
zoolkhan nope. I'm in Germany right now. Nothing but corn fields here. Lol
Nice tips, and epic view
When u say that you rebooted the app, does that mean you literally cut your cellphone off and back on our just closed out the djigo4 application and the reopened it?
If you had used the parabolic antenna...would that have helped?
Nice Video! How ist the font called you're working with? Which program do you edit with?
lanschl thanks so much for the nice comments :) still learning but starting to figure out some settings.
I am using Final Cut Pro for this edit - I am sure the font was called "3D BASIC"
Please take time to subscribe - many more videos on the way. Thanks so much
Awesome edit and good lesson. Thanks for sharing. BTW what were your video settings?
DAXimusTT hi DAX, thanks mate for taking the time to watch. The settings for this were (2.7k - 30fps - cloudy white balance - cinelog colour profile) - polar pro series filters make a good difference to footage captured I think.
Thanks for this video. Now we know a bit more about mavic and Australia)). I had same problem but my home point was from the boat.
Music v. similar to one I made in garageband. :) Uncanny. Great vid!
nice video quality.. can i ask your's camera's settings? thank you
Andrew Neger hi Andrew thanks mate. This video was all manual setting, cloudy white balance, polar pro filter, ISO 100, 30fps, shutter speed 60 (the double rule)
I plan on doing another upload to cover best settings for video soon if you want to keep an eye on my channel.
I didn't know about the RTH altitude setting. Thanks. I'll update my settings for sure.
Wow, wondering how this would go down if the signal is lost. Thanks for sharing.
should that thing come home anyways as it ses obstacles an can navigate around or above it also in RTH mode with too low set altitude defaults?
zoolkhan SHOULD - but narrow tree branches/twigs aren't always seen by the sensors. This can tangle up the props. More room is always safer
aye aye.. of course youre right.
Very interesting video and super smooth flight. I always dread if something like this happens. Thanks for the important information and lovely footage. You certainly have my sub 😀👍👍👍
Good vid Bro...Nice one
good info!
Wow that was closed car.. IF was 30meter..Say good bye to Mavic. nicely put together brother!!
KennyLee NYC hey KennyLee - too close :/ lucky 🍀 thanks so much for watching
Gun Pilot rules are meant to be broken, keep soaring lad!!
You have breached the VLOS regulation
101.073 Operation must generally be within visual line of sight
Unmanned aircraft must be operated within visual line of sight
(1) A person commits an offence of strict liability if:
(a) the person operates an unmanned aircraft; and
(b) the aircraft is not operated within the person’s visual line of sight.
Penalty: 50 penalty units.
Exception-CASA approval
(2) Subregulation (1) does not apply if:
(a) the person holds an approval under regulation 101.029 to operate the unmanned aircraft beyond the person’s visual line of sight; and
(b) the conditions (if any) imposed on the approval are complied with.
Note: A defendant bears an evidential burden in relation to the matter in subregulation (2): see subsection 13.3(3) of the Criminal Code.
Meaning of operated within visual line of sight
(3) An unmanned aircraft is being operated within the visual line of sight of the person operating the aircraft if the person can continually see, orient and navigate the aircraft to meet the person’s separation and collision avoidance responsibilities, with or without corrective lenses, but without the use of binoculars, a telescope or other similar device.
The main point in this reg is that :
you have to prove to CASA in court ("A defendant bears an evidential burden") that you could fully understand the ORIENTATION of the RPA at that distance (and its not possible - I fly RPAs, including a Mavic for business purposes and very familiar with what you could/could not see at that distance).
And remember, at ay time someone could just use this CASA provided link to inform them of this dangerous and illegal use of an RPA www.casa.gov.au/webform/unsafe-drone-operations-complaint-form
Ignore if you will, others won't...................................
great video. thank you for these tips. beautiful area there. i am good with DJI software, except the Go4 SW that crashes....
Joe Howarth haven't had the dreaded DJI app crash here - IOS
Tq for ur very useful info.
great footage. this happend to me the other day all went blank I pressed the return home on the remote height set at 70 metres. about 3 minutes later came hovering over my head such a good feeling to see it. always check them return home settings guys 👍
Beautiful video. I’ve only had my Mavic Mini a few weeks so I’m still too scared to fly over water 😂
Really good vid! I'm in.
Amazing video new sub here and thanks for the information I will be setting the RTH height immediately 👌😎👍
GORGEOUS
gonna save this vid for when i get mine!
Great video
Photo finish thanks you Photo finish
Where do you see the screen lock in our home point before take off?
What happened if you were flying up to 200 meters and lost signal? but you set the return home 70 meters, will it go to 70 meters first and fly back?
No, it wont descend if its higher than RTH altitude.
Kristian Tunare thanks!
Thats the reason why I bought the old 2nd hand Mavic Pro instead of Mini 2.
really nice shots, sub'd.
which filter were you using on that shoot?
Larry Zeleski polar pro nd16 polarised for this one Larry
nice video, good on you, mate
So..... an incredibly stressful flight with this new tech! They want how much for it???
