My favorite is Batman and its because of my Mom. I saved lawn mowing money for weeks to buy that game. We went to town (we lived about 30 miles into the country) for groceries and so I could get Batman. Walmart was sold out, Kmart was sold out, KB Toys also. I didn't say anything, but she knew I was crushed. We drove home and put away the groceries then she got me back in the car and took me to the next big town almost 40 miles to the other side of where we lived so I could finally find the game at Toys R Us. I never forgot this and actually brought it up just a few months ago when we were talking. I asked her why she did that when we would be back to town the next week for groceries anyway. She told me she couldn't wait a week to watch me smile. I love you Momma.

It really does feel better when you earn something...I remember having a paper route and selling greeting cards as a kid and finally having enough money to go to the Jewel and buy Dragonfire for the Atari 2600...I played that game a ton...you just use things more when you've earned them and appreciate the work and value it took to get it.

Favorite game is Zelda II. Remember going with my grandmother to get it at Toys R Us way back when. Miss grabbing the paper card and taking it to the little window where all the games were hidden to pick it up.

I'm so old I remember being disappointed when they went to the paper card system. Used to be you could just pull the game off the shelf and look at it. (Obviously I know why they abandoned that method.)

Great book. I backed it day 1. Kind of wish the unlicensed games were in a separate section away from the licensed games, but it's all good. Also, there's a Punch-Out!! variant he must've missed. It's a slight logo size difference. (not the Mike Tyson version).

8:48 - what a trippy thing to see my name in the final pages of this amazing book... thanks a million, Pat. You are the man.
I am quite literally making it a point to read every single review. I have a 4 month old son and time is not on my side, but I will read the whole thing... I promise. I'm only up to the first batch of baseball game reviews. haha

I realize that everyone on here will throw rocks at me (but luckily they will miss because it is the worst weapon) but actually Friday the 13th is my favorite NES game, or perhaps Maniac Mansion. I simply have huge nostalgia for both, and I enjoyed the cinematic scope that they tried for. I truly felt immersed in those games. Long time fan :)

I have lots of "favorite" NES games but one that stands out to me is City Connection. My Mom passed away earlier this week after being sick for much of my life and by consequence of that she was rarely able to leave the house while I was growing up. When I was a kid, maybe 8 or 9, our local rental place was selling off its NES games to make way for newer consoles. On a rare occasion, she was actually feeling up to getting out and took me with her. I saw the game and didn't know anything about it but as a kid I was enthralled by all things involving cars. I asked her if I could have it and she bought it for me. It's not a great game and it's not even that eventful of a memory, but it's one I'll cherish forever. It was one of very few times my mother left the house and we went somewhere together and she bought me a game. How cool was she? I'm going to miss her. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to share.

Great video! I've got to pick up that book! My favorite NES game is absolutely Dragon Warrior. It was the first time I realized the hold these awesome games had on me. I played Dragon Warrior for days straight, not caring about food, water or the outside world. After I finally beat the Dragon Lord I was couldn't move my neck and shoulders for days from being in the same position for so long. And all I could think of was what game is next. I'm Creed and I'm an old school video game addict since they were new. :]

Awesome review, John! My favorite NES game is tough, but I thought of the game that I spent the most time playing and mapping out, and it would have to be Metroid. That game really changed the way I played and enjoyed games, and defined the genre of games that I like to this very day!

8:28 wrong. the dragon warrior giveaway was NOT a contest that they did. it was the first time in video game history where a real video game with real retail value was given away free for subscribing to a magazine. that's how you got it. i subscribed to nintendo power and was given that game free. this was repeated about a decade later when i had 5 subscriptions to nintendo power and received 5 zelda discs for the gamecube in early 2001/2 (can't remember exact year).

Not sure if this would count or not but my favorite game is the famicom version of Castlevania 3 mainly because nothing in it is censored and the soundtrack is freaking incredible thanks to the extra sound channels and to top it all off the difficulty is more balanced.

My pick for my favorite NES game has to be Ninja Gaiden. Though I never played it as a kid, it was the game that got me into collecting for the NES. Favourite NES Game: Final Fantasy
I didn't really know what I was doing, but the World came alive for me as a kid in a way that no other game at the time could. The music, the gameplay, it was familiar enough but new and different in ways that made it a breath of fresh air from Tolkien/D&D fantasy. Mega Man 2 is definitely a runner up though.

love your Channel, John one of the most down-to-earth reviewers out there in my opinion,
as far as my favorite NES game I would have to go with the one that I have the most fond memories of which is
"River City Ransom" countless hours of Co-op me and my sister used to play it, growing up I didn't have any brothers so she used to be my "player 2" she always hated playing any kind of fighting games LoL but after she played it once, she changed her mind, the sauna scene was always so funny to us when we were kids.
really makes me want to go back and relive those days.

My all-time favourite has to be Power Blade. Love everything about it: the game design and the power-up system, the non-linearity (and the RPG elements), the tight controls, the brilliant graphics and the animation, the AMAZING soundtrack -- and even the storyline 🍔 A polished, yet fairly obscure NES gem and a true Nintendo action/platforming classic IMHO.

My favorite Nes game is hard to choose. I did not "grow up" with it like I did the SNES. However I spent a lot of time with the NES whenever I went to my grandmothers. The game she had that I loved the most was TMNT 3 The Manhattan Project. If not that I was playing lots of Super Mario 3 and Blaster Master

My favorite NES game is Lifeforce! I can't believe I saw someone else say that, I thought I was the only one! A very underrated and not much talked about game, I still enjoy playing it just as much as I did as a kid! Oh and this book looks awesome, I need it!!
