I just thought of an aftermath. Years after this event, Dib grows older. Zim returns to earth, but this time on a mission. A fake mission. When he first meets Dib, he recognizes the 12-year old as his helper. However, Dib doesn't recognize Zim, as it has been years since he first met him. As time goes on, Dib starts to recognize Zim as "the alien who loved to hide" and starts to question him. Of course, Zim denies all of this, but because he's terrible at lying, Dib figures it out. Enter this song and Animatic as a flashback both are having.
What if this happened while Zim was banished? He crash landed on earth and a younger Dib found him. When he left, Dib grew up and eventually forgot the encounter. When Zim comes back on a mission, he and Dib don’t recognize each other. Slowly, the memories come back. That’s why Dib is so determined to prove Zim is an alien. He wants to prove to himself that his tiny alien came back
It's just sad.... Just thinking about the depressing part of Invader Zim. Dib- Is picked on for doing what he loves and saying Zim is an alien. Zim- Defective and supposedly killed two former Tallests.

Okay but just imagine this happens before the series right? And Zim accidentally crash lands on Earth, meets Dib and then with his help gets his zoot working and returns to the armada... Then because Dib's told everyone about the alien, they start thinking he's crazy and he becomes obsessed with proving that the paranormal exists. Later Zim is given his 'mission' and returns to conquer earth, having forgotten about his crash- and obviously this tiny menace can't be the same big, wise alien that dib met when he was little, right? So yeah- this has been haunting my thoughts for a while...
This also ties into Dark Harvest and what Dib says in it. I can't remember what he said exactly, or who to, but I do know it had something to do with being abducted by an alien or something like that.
Every single time I see this I just melt. Sometimes I sing this song at work and I always smile when I think about it. The soothing music and cute artwork never fail to activate my serotonin centers. Kiddo Dib is such a cutie, and him being besties with Gir makes so much sense; Zim's eventual begrudging acceptance of him is just PERFECT. They are both each other's tiny alien.

My favorite thing about animatics is seeing the art progressively get better or seeing it change overtime. I just like seeing improvement and I think the perfect example of that. Even if it’s small details like how Dibs cowlick seems to get easier for you to draw and starts to get a more consistent shape you can see the improvement. I love this animatic so much from the story, to the art, to the song, it just all blends together perfectly.

The little relationship Dib and Gir end up having throughout this animatic just makes me constantly smile and gives me so much joy. 2:57 Is especially so fricken cute and makes my heart wanna burst, because Gir brings him in to watch Zim work and they both hide together while watching him do his stuff ^_^ Then Zim actually feeling bad when he yells at Dib, making him cry, so he reluctantly allows him to stay and help him. Not to mention I love that Zim looks like he's older/taller than Dib (even though canonically he is indeed older lol) and Dib looks like he's a bit younger than a 12 year old

Here's what I have so far, if your curious, though it's more of a sketch/daydream so far: Notes: (Inspired by the Zim and Dib animatic AU Tiny Alien by tomatson on TH-cam) *After the crash* While calculating the damage to his Voot, Zim hears rustling behind him and quickly turns to face the noise, finding a small creature staring at him. “Aww, it's a baby!” squeals Gir, answering one of Zim's questions. ‘A Smeet?’ ponders Zim, wrapping a Pak leg around the creature’s waist and picking it up.
I want to see canon-Dib and Zim react to this. 😂😍 I can see Zim being very impressed at his counterpart's "plan" of luring the Dib-smeet into a friendship to make concerning Earth, later on, easier and Dib begging his innocent child self to not buy it. (Both are wrong, obviously. 😆 Zim in the video didn't know he was even coming BACK. Canon-Zim and Dib just love jumping to conclusions. 😂😆 They have that in common. 😍😊)
