    When someone walks up to a yogi and says, "I don't know who I am." The yogi responds, "Congratulations! You've arrived and figured it all out. Now let the fun begin! Play!"
    I love your point that we're always ongoing projects until we die. It sort of comes in waves and some sudden changes. I felt a shift in 8th grade, but I don't feel much different since I was 10 years old. Something clicked. I love the idea of creating yourself too. No one is a perfectly shiny box.

    I had an identity crisis when I moved to school. It's weird because you pack up your stuff and you think you're you but once you get there no one knows you and you have to make a decision of what parts of you that you bring with and what parts you leave at home. Dunno, it was just a weird experience. Evaluating who I thought I was and who I wanted to be and who I really was.

      Completely agree. When I switched schools, I realized that I'd been slowly changing for years, and that now I didn't have to live up to the expectations of those around me.

    • @hannahparrott269
      @hannahparrott269 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +izzy120391 The weird thing is when you move around all of your life but then have to stay in one place for more than 3 yrs, and for the first time you have to be part of a coherent community. It's one of those things that's really strange but also kind of cool. Also kind of changes your identity, but maybe just living does that.

    • @hannathesinger6299
      @hannathesinger6299 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      +izzy120391 I went through/am still going through the same thing when I got to college. I tried to fix the parts of my personality that I didn't like back home, thinking that I could just slip into a New Hanna and no one would know...but I fell into my old patterns and I'm still the awkward, dark humored, nerd I was. The great thing is, I've gotten to meet loads of wonderful people who appreciate those traits and often share them. I think it's easy to make sweeping declarations about turning a new leaf for a new place, but I've never been able to do big changes all at once, in my own experience real change happens overtime when no one notices until you look back and take it all in.

    • @LizTiddington
      @LizTiddington 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Hannah Parrott yes, that is exactly my experience, it's funny when you're young and less mobile (i.e. can't drive) that even moving within the same area can have a massive effect, suddenly I was a country girl rather than a town girl, I travelled by bus rather than on foot, I had to pre-arrange get-togethers rather than just walking over to people's houses - and all of that really fundamentally changed my relationship with people.

  • @bensjammin9
    @bensjammin9 8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Went and took that BuzzFeed quiz. I got Hank Green XD
    So, according to BuzzFeed, I am more Hank Green than Hank Green. Interesting.
    On the note of being yourself, it is pretty hard. Who am I? No idea, really. When I am being myself, I consider that to be as natural as possible. I give my most natural reactions and responses to the events surrounding me. I do whatever feels good and right to me in each moment I live. Sometimes, most of the time, it shifts and changes, but I suppose I am still being myself as much as possible by being naturally responsive in each moment. However, it could also be argued both for and against regarding whether holding back words or actions is not being yourself, or if being yourself includes a certain level of self-control and change-causing reflection.

      Hank is an English-Language imageboard website.
      Launched on October 1, 2003, Hanks boards were originally used for posting pictures and discussing manga and anime, as the site was modeled on Japanese imageboards, particularly Jerry.
      Hank quickly became popular and expanded, though much of Hankss content still features otaku, anime, and other Japanese cultural influences.

    I'm always so amazed by the amount of just pure insight both Hank and John share with us. In a world where everyone seems to hide behind a mask of apathy I love that these two normal guys can actually make millions of people genuinely think about the the world and how we fit inside of it.

    To anybody who is interested in personal identity, I highly recommend The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa.
    "“My soul is a hidden orchestra; I know not what instruments, what fiddlestrings and harps, drums and tamboura I sound and clash inside myself. All I hear is the symphony.”
    "“Everything around me is evaporating. My whole life, my memories, my imagination and its contents, my personality - it's all evaporating. I continuously feel that I was someone else, that I felt something else, that I thought something else. What I'm attending here is a show with another set. And the show I'm attending is myself.”
    "What we see isn't what we see but what we are.”

    This video had a way bigger impact on me than I thought it would. So many of the things that are important to my "me"-ness didn't come directly from me, but came from the books I read, the people I encountered, and the things I have seen. And I wouldn't trade that "me" for anything, even if she is different every day.

      Hannah H. Yeah I thought he was a hufflepuff! But John's a hufflepuff, right? I'm fairly certain that's an official fact.
      Also can we discuss what makes him a Slytherclaw exactly?

    • @hannahheller8474
      @hannahheller8474 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Donna Noble Yeah, John is. Maybe Hank's more ambitious and that's the Slytherin part? Pretty sure he's not cunning or power hungry. And I can see how he's a Ravenclaw; I mean, he and John created an online community based on the awesomeness of being nerdy so

    I came out as a lesbian four years ago and now I'm finding out that I'm a little more wibbly-wobbly pan/bi sexual something or other.

    Well put Hank, thank you. It's amazing how solid our identity seems, or should be, isn't it? And yet there is really nothing inherent about it at all... it's a useful construct to have around as a shortcut, but we are never really beholden to it, we can always choose anew as we shed things and get in touch with what's really authentic for us. I recently did a series of posts on my blog about identity/ies, and your video really dovetails beautifully with them. Your videos manage to capture things so well and succinctly, I love 'em. Thank you for making and sharing them with us all. :)

    Great video, Hank! This reminds me of what John often says about how people contain multitudes. Not only are we many different people over the course of our life, but we also are many different people at any one given point in time.
    Which may explain why I am easily overwhelmed when surrounded by huge crowds of people. It's so hard for my mind to grasp that every person around me has their own intricate and complicated life, with their own collection of intricate and complicated personalities, and it requires immense effort to actively take in, let alone attempt to understand, even a fraction of all the people and things that surround me on a daily basis. @_@
    I guess reflecting about how complex you yourself are as a person helps you, in a way, to better appreciate the utterly complexity of the world we all live in.

    Just to share as someone who's struggled with identity, self-discovery and understanding is really hard. What helped me most was actually understanding my Hogwarts house! I had thought for years that I was a Ravenclaw, but I'm really a Hufflepuff. Admitting to myself that I had gotten my house wrong was a really big step towards understanding myself and moving forward during the transition from high school to college. Being able to admit that middle school me and college me aren't the same me was a growing experience.

    • @emw9247
      @emw9247 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went through something similar to that as well. My life has essentially been one long identity crisis, but accepting my hogwarts house did help me a lot. For a long time I thought I was a Gryffindor, but I actually felt better upon accepting that I was a Slytherin. While we can't really too heavily on these things to tell us who we are, and they can only go so far, they can be really helpful in at least lessening an existential crisis. Meyers Briggs helped me a lot too. I was mistyped as an INFP for a while, but I'm actually INTP :)

The idea of just being makes it so much easier to roll with the proverbial punches and I have discovered that I care so much less about negative comments and destructive retoric if I can be ever-evolving in my mental state. It has sure as hell helped me cope with anxiety attacks and episodes of deep depression more times than I can or care to count.

    Dear Vlogbrothers I hope you know your apart of my morning routine, I hope you know how inspiring you are to me. I watch one of your videos every morning to get by (followed by hot cocoa of course) thank you for getting me through high school so far. I'm still a freshmen schools not over yet but I want to thank you. Your getting me to things I would never do. I tried out and got into the talent show and I sang in front of a crowd it was amazing. I tried to tell someone my feelings, it didn't end well but I had the courage to try because of you. I have friends, I made contact with people on my own, I get up and I know that you guys are there to make me laugh and to get me through whatever is next in my life, I know I can when you guys are there. So thanks for being so inspiring to me. For getting me through the hard times and for making the great times greater. I'm trying to create the life I want to live and to be the person I want to be, because of you so just thank you for being you.

I believe it was because of an identity crisis and just yesterday I kind of solved it while talking about my problems to my best friend my sister. But this idea gave me a sort of warm hug when Hank said that it is not an easy problem to solve. Now i know that I will never truly know my identity as it is always changing :) Thank you Hank :)

    I clicked on the link to this video expecting the kind of deliberate thoughtfulness and organized progression of opinion supported by fact that I normally see when I watch your videos. What I got instead was a mad dash of desperately trying to find enough words to describe the magnitude of how it feels to think about fundamental concepts and relay how important these concepts feel even if they are unable to be fully understood. This could very easily be described as rambling, and overcomplicating a subject by breaking it down into smaller pieces than it should be. However, despite the sparse population of truly useful content in this video, it did lay down a good framework for the useful thoughts that it conveyed in the end, and the style was an enjoyable change of pace from what I usually expect from a vlogbrothers video. Thank you for sharing what I can only describe as your word vomit. Also, at the last bit all I could think was "time to go fuck a blender."

I also very much enjoyed this video and your thoughts because as an emerging adult/college student, I am doing lots of "who am I?" questioning. So its nice to try to figure it out some more with more thoughts on identity from more people. Thank you!

      +CraftKitty Well of course the complexities of the human personality cannot be measured in the 16 permutations of a seemingly random set of 8 letters, but to say that they're "bullshit" is kind of besides the point. Personality types are no more than a comfort, another category, another method for the brain to try to understand the brain. Gender is also a category. Race, sexuality, nationality... We all fall slightly outside of these commonly accepted categories and norms because at the end of the day they are no more than averages of humans as a whole. We all know how skewed averages can be. To call personality types bullshit would be the same as calling all these other categories bullshit. Yes. I agree with you. They are. But is that why we use them? To seek truth? No. As Hank Green says, the story of the self is composed of at least a little bit of a lie. A little bit of who we strive to be and not entirely who we really are at the moment.

      +Raquel E sure astrology is bunk as hell (scientists used to make it up to they could impress kings with their bogus predictions but it was all lies so that they could make money and a decent living), but I have studied mbti, socionics and jungian functions for a long time and they are extremely astute. They say the use of science is in that it can predict things, and I find that with socionics, I can predict traits and behaviors, group interactions. Most of the time when people think it is bunk, it is because they mistype themselves and others and the tests are garbage compared to deep understanding of the person and the types and function.

I'm not really sure how we became friends as we were so different, but low and behold, 8 years of friendship later we were like twins. We liked the same stores, music, sports, activities, books, fandoms, movies, clothes, and we would always catch ourselves saying the same thing at the same time. +Ian Neufeld And the problem I found with quizzes and such is that you evaluate the results, noting which parts are accurate and which are offbase. So while maybe you discover a new label (INTP!) the meat of it is all a priori knowledge. It's nice to have that articulation, but ultimately you haven't discovered anything new about yourself -- unless you're willing to blindly accept the results of internet quizzes. Which you shouldn't. #Ravenclaw

    • @photon_shines
      @photon_shines 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ian Neufeld I haven't thought about personality tests the way you did before, but what you say makes so much sense as well. My problem with them (which you've mentioned as well) is that there simply aren't enough categories to account for the sheer number of actually different and unique individuals. Therefore, people are trying to define or evaluate themselves based on false premises.
      I haven't thought about how people are blindly accepting the results before because I don't do that, but it's true that it happens. And that's harmful regardless of whether or not the tests are accurate or fine-grained enough.

    I liked this reflection on the self so much, just as a thoughtful exploration. Then Sunday night David Bowie passed away, and now I'm viewing it in a subtly different light.
    Bowie was a master of self-invention and reinvention. He changed himself repeatedly, and it looked effortless. I would think he too found it hard to let go of things that worked in pursuit of some new idea or focus. But maybe also he couldn't help but go for the new thing. He certainly stayed current with music more than most super-successful musicians seem to.
    Anyway, it's a weird and sad but maybe thought-provoking series of events to be thinking about Hank's video and about David Bowie's life and legacy at the same time.

    ENTP!!!
    Okay, my more reasonable comment now that I am actually able to use my computer instead of my phone:
    As a Myers-Briggs-aholic, I do not believe that you are an ENFP. It's sort of a Myers-Briggs community no-no to tell someone that they're not the type that they claim to be, but I've got a pretty strong argument here.
    The Myers-Briggs doesn't have so much to do with the four letters (referred to as the "dichotomies") as it does with the 8 cognitive functions. Each person has all eight, but only four of them are used on a more conscious and frequent level (the use and reliability of each function dwindles as you go down the stack). ENFPs and *ENTPs* -- the type I believe you are -- share the first and fourth function, but their second and third are different.
    ENTPs are much more emotionally expressive than ENFPs, despite what the letters suggest. The second function of an ENFP is *introverted feeling*, which means that they don't typically externalize their emotions. They can certainly be very passionate and animated, but their faces don't usually display their true, nuanced emotions. ENTPs, on the other hand, are *extroverted feelers*, meaning that their emotions will be more easily observed at the physical level. Hank, you have got one of the most emotionally expressive faces I've ever seen. A good compare-and-contrast model would be John -- an INFP -- who can get very worked up about his subject matter while still having a pretty expressionless face in comparison to yours (because he, like an ENFP, is an introverted feeler).
    In my opinion (and others that I've seen across forums and such) you are practically the ENTP poster child. Every vlog I've seen from you only reaffirms your ENTP...ness (yes, awkward term, I know). *This* vlog reaffirms it as well. You see the subject of personal identity as very abstract and distant, while an ENFP would actually be quite the opposite (being an introverted feeler makes you err more on the hyper-individualistic side. They tend to have a very strong sense of who they believe they are).
    Had to get that out of my system, even if you never read this. My ENFP boyfriend was highly amused when I had my little impassioned rant about why you weren't an ENFP (being an INFJ, I am also an extroverted feeler. I get pretty worked up if the issue is interesting to me).

I've just started my first year of college, and while it's hard to go through existential crises over who we really are, watching this video did help me feel a lot better to know that I'm not alone, that we are all just people trying to figure out who we are before we inevitably die and trying to have who we are and what we do mean something to us in the meantime. Not sure if that made total sense.

    When the cows come home depends on where you put your cows. We put our cows in the mountains above the town for the summer. Cows would rather walk down hills than up them, so over a few weeks they would tend to wander back down into town. If you put them higher in the mountains, they would seek lower elevations in response to colder weather. If there isn't a clear uphill-downhill relation ship between pasture and home, cows wont come back. Cows don't think of home the same way we do. So, when the cows come home can be a few weeks, a few months, or never. Depending on your home and on the cows.
