I've started completely breaking the rules by placing my subject completely out of the frame. Beat that! 😀😉

Finally a balanced, nuanced, and reasoned discussion of the "rules". And, as always, excellent examples to showcase when to keep and when to break.

Thank you for your view on rules and their application - or not - in one’s photography. Rules can be like training wheels on a bicycle; necessary until one learns to ride without them.

OMG. It's taken me years to understand the rules. Now I have to learn how to break them! It's a funny old life. Seriously, another excellent, thought provoking video. Cheers and thanks.

Great video. I think it is good to know the rules to create good, but it is important to know when to break the rules on purpose to make even better images

Photography is much like writing. One has to know what they're wanting to say, what story is it they want their readers to "get". When intention is known, both come alive. Thanks so much.

Well, yeah, but it’s vitally, vitally, vitally important that shooters first learn the guidelines. It’s almost like learning to juggle two lemons with two hands, then jumping to chucking seven knives, one-handed: There’s levels to this ish, folks.
In my head, I say stuff like: Find out how the shooters you admire use the guidelines, copy them assiduously, figure out why their style falls short of your own vision.
I don’t actually copy Gordon Parks, but I think about him, and my shots get better. I still stick to the guidelines most of the time, but when I step away, it’s with great consideration and forethought, or because my subject is in motion and doesn’t give a damn about my high-faluting artistic ambitions.

  • @ceaabe

Good advice. But there are too many people out there which then will say: You broke a rule, that's bad! At least, that's what I heard nearly every time.

In fact, it's not even necessary to learn the rules! Why? Because contrary to popular belief, the rules are not man made - rather they are inherent within nature itself. In other words, the better and more experienced photographer you become, these so called 'rules' will emerge in your work naturally, spontaneously and inevitably. You don't even have to 'learn' about them first.

@@e6Vlogs any time. It seems to mostly be a millennial thing. Saying “you’re welcome” before thanks have been offered, is generally perceived as snarky and insincere, no matter whether it was intended that way or not. As a polite response to thanks, that’s something different altogether.
