I'm actually glad she said it the way she said it, because it forced me to think about it. Like wouldn't it be great if one day someone like me, a "math illiterate," would be like someone who couldn't sign his name back in the day. How much smarter our society would be on the whole.
Excellent Lessons : In every other subject, you are allowed to have your own independent questions formed by your curiosity and creativity. It develops deeper interest in subject. Let math be that.. Teacher gives formula and answers, let student form the questions and real world models. All the research of computer science is based on this principles. You have computing power ready, go figure out what you can do with it.

Schools tend to need to be somewhat "one-size-fits-all", due to economics and logistics. One place even public schools can improve without using greater resources - is to regularly evaluate. As it is today we do not usually find that a student is truly failing math until they get to Algerbra II

And frankly: if you were actually surprised that students didn’t like math class, then you were SEVERELY under qualified to be a teacher.
Yeah, I get what she was thinking. I just thought it was a funny thing to say in a talk about math anxiety. Also even though it being socially unacceptable suggests a smarter culture it's obviously not the point and doesn't necessarily help. I also know people who couldn't sign their names but are still hard working contributors to society and excel in many other fields. But I think it would help if math were a social norm so you'd get lots of practice every day. That's were I think she's going.

Here is the bigger problem, in my view. A novel teacher must also prepare students for a math universe who neither present or teach the same way that they do. In fact, the "traditional" approach dominates like a math hegenomy and it is success in that hegemonic learning style that will still control the definition of math success.

Totally agree...visual perceptions aid in understanding a concept way better than other means. Math is fun n interesting if learnt this way..

Math is CERTAINLY worth MUCH more than many time wasting projects students are forced to waste time on!
