I love that after Gloc 9's last line, "Sometimes a gay is manlier than a straight man", the mv featured some of the successful gays in the country like Boy Abunda. There is a saying that "A real man knows his responsibilities" but there are a lot of men who are afraid to face their obligations and easily accept defeats, while the gays who are usually bullied and branded by close minded people as weak, are the ones who ended up victorious in life and the one who supports their families.
The lyrics is so powerful specially in Filipino.

Revisiting this because I have watched Gloc9's interview wherein he was asked about this song. He said he wrote this song for his son who was still young back then, who's gay and hadn't come out of the closet yet. He wanted to tell his son to embrace who he is and that he's proud of him no matter if his gay or not.
This was back in the time when LGBTQ+ was not as accepted as it is now. Gays were always teased, and fathers would feel that boys should be manly and not soft. Some would even force or beat or sometimes drown their sons in the water in an attempt to "straighten them up." On the first rap verse Gloc9 talked about "him always being that way (different from the way most people behaves) and that the more his dad beat him up the more he "softens up."
On the last rap verse, it talked about his si lings got married and left home one by one and he was the only one who was left to take care of his sick father even if his dad will bemad seeing him wearing dresses. But at the end with all that had happened his dad realized that males shouldn't be judged by their muscles or their beards because his straight sons weren't there to fulfill their responsibilities to their dad and only his gay son was there to take care of him, that's why he said that "sometimes gays are manlier than men."
The whole MV shows the most commonly depicted life of a growing gay who's struggling with his sexuality, in the Philippines during those years at least. The MV started with the dad drowning the yoing son on a drum of water while asking "are you a boy or a girl?" But the son would always say "i'm a girl." The public thinks that young gays would play dressup in their free time complete with wearing dresses, heels and make ups. And the homo father hates that so when he caught his son dressing up he beat him up hard again until the son was forced to sayd that he "won't wear Mother's skirt again." But I love that towards the end of the MV, popular and successful Filipino gay personalities were shown.
I wish the MV have subtitles so you can also react to the lyrics.

As what I know, Pablo is a fan of Gloc 9. So the influence is pretty evident. A lot of lyrics in the songs Pablo wrote are very similar to Gloc 9's song. One good example is the rap part of josh in Ikako and Gloc 9's Sukli. And their rapping style are similar as well.

This song is for LGBTQ, sirena means mermaid, I don't know why but some of the people here call gays sirena, so the chorus means she is a mermaid and whatever they say his flag will not going down, and the rap part is a story of a boy that is gay and his father notice it and his father always hit him because his gay. so the first verse is a story of the kid childhood, the 2nd verse is when he's teenager and the last and third wich I like the most is when he's adult, where all of his sibling leaves the house and his the only one stay and eventually since his father is sick but he's the one who take care of him, and his father say sorry to all he did to him and accept him for who he is and may fave part in the lyrics is when his father say this in to him " I'm sorry for all I've done because being a man is not measured because your masculine and strong, sometimes an gay man is more of a man than a 'real' man " that is the scene where he Is crying on the bathroom.
Sorry not really comfortable on my english. ☺️

    Song lyrics
    Title: sirena
    Artist: gloc9
    I'm a mermaid
    Ako'y isang sirena
No matter what they say, I'm really beautiful
    I'm a mermaid
    Ako'y isang sirena
No matter what they do, my flag will not fall
Drum with water im immersed in
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
    Huge arms, on me grinding
Naglalakihang mga braso, sa 'ki'y dumidikdik
Drum with water im immersed in
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
If its a competition for holding your breath, you will be amazed by me
    Ever since I was young
Simula pa nang bata pa ako
    It's obvious when i play
    Halata mo na kapag naglalaro
So it seems everyone is confused
    Kaya parang lahat ay nalilito
Good at Chinese garter and hopscotch
Magaling sa Chinese garter at piko
    My lips are red
    Mga labi ko'y pulang-pula
    With bubble gum kicked
    Sa bubble gum na sinapa
Walk around in front of the mirror
    Palakad-lakad sa harapan ng salamin
Saying to himself, "What can they do to me?"
Sinasabi sa sarili, "Ano'ng panama nila?"
    While my waist moves
    Habang kumekembot ang bewang
    My dangling earrings
    Mga hikaw na gumegewang
Using the powder bought from Aling Bebang
To cover up the bruises on my face
Upang matakpan ang mga pasa sa mukha
From my father who doesn't seem happy
When everytime I can be seen, im always beaten
As time passed I didn't realize it
Instead of hardening, i seemed to soften
My loving heart is like curled eyelashes
Ang puso kong mapagmahal, parang pilik-matang kulot
    I'm a mermaid
    Ako'y isang sirena
No matter what they say, I'm really beautiful
    I'm a mermaid
    Ako'y isang sirena
No matter what they do, my flag will not fall
Drum with water im immersed in
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
    Huge arms, on me grinding
Naglalakihang mga braso, sa 'ki'y dumidikdik
Drum with water im immersed in
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
If its a competition for holding your breath, you will be amazed by me
Up until I became a young man
Hanggang sa naging binata na ako
Wait, it's wrong, im supposed to be a young girl
Teka muna, mali, dalaga na pala 'to
But why is everyone still confused?
    What are your problems?
    Ano ba'ng mga problema n'yo?
Is it because my actions are different?
    What should your eyes see?
Sa dapat makita ng inyong mata?
Every time I watch the league, I'm always stunned
Sa tuwing nanonood ng liga, laging natutulala
Even though the ball didn't go in the hoop, I was still very happy
Even if their feet got bruised due to so much courage, just that
He beats me with a pipe even if it's rusty
Akong paluin ng tubo kahit kinakalawang
"Stop it, Father, I won't be rebellious towards you anymore
"Tama na naman, Itay, 'di na po ako pasaway
    "I won't wear Mother's old dress anymore"
'Di ko na po isusuot ang lumang saya ni Inay"
When I feel like crying, I'll run through the rain
I sometimes think that I might be adopted
Because every day is always a relentless stretch
    my beauty reaches the undersea
    I'm a mermaid
    Ako'y isang sirena
No matter what they say, I'm really beautiful
    I'm a mermaid
    Ako'y isang sirena
No matter what they do, my flag will not fall
Drum with water im immersed in
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
    Huge arms, on me grinding
Naglalakihang mga braso, sa 'ki'y dumidikdik
Drum with water im immersed in
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
If it's a competition for holding your breath, you will be amazed by me
    Years passed
    Lumipas ang mga taon
My brothers all got married, they all left with their partners
Nangagsipag-asawa aking mga kapatid, lahat sila'y sumama
They stayed far away, so far they couldn't even visit
    Nagpakalayo-layo, ni hindi makabisita
"Let's eat, Father, the table is ready"
"Kakain na po, Itay, nakahanda na'ng lamesita"
I guide him when walking, one step at a time
    Akay-akay sa paglakad, paisa-isang hakbang
His once muscular body is now just bones and skins
Ngayo'y buto't balat ang dating matipunong katawan
So on your birthday, I'll try to change
Kaya sa 'yong kaarawan, susubukan kong palitan
The sadness that we once felt, let's not try to remember those anymore
Although you're a little annoyed, it's not because of your cancer
Kahit medyo naiinis, hindi dahil sa nagka-cancer
Because your guardian is wearing a dress
    Kasi dahil ang tagapag-alaga mo'y naka-duster
    One night, you called me
Isang gabi, ako'y iyong tinawag, lumapit
I'm by your side, you stand up, and held my shoulders
You held my hand, and even if you find it hard to speak
Ka sa aking kamay, kahit hirap magsalita
"Son, I'm sorry for everything I've done
"Anak, patawad sana sa lahat ng aking nagawa
Courage isnt measured by the mustache on the face
'Di sinusukat ang tapang at ang bigote sa mukha
Because sometimes, a gay man is more stronger than a straight man"
Drum with water im immersed in
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
    Huge arms, on me grinding
Naglalakihang mga braso, sa 'ki'y dumidikdik
Drum with water im immersed in
Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid
If it's a competition for holding your breath, you will be amazed by me
    I'm a mermaid
    Ako'y isang sirena
No matter what they do, my flag will not fall

    Sirena means "mermaid"
In the song, he feels like he's a mermaid because he was always violently pushed in a drum of water by his father... So he tries to convert the negative reality into a positive mindset... that he's a mermaid and no one can ever defeat him.

For you Jeevan to understand the title you can see at the begging a homophobic father who wanted his son to be straight so he punishes his son by drowning him in water then asking him what's his gender and also keep punching him etc. Before there is a lot of people here in the Philippines we have a toxic masculinity and there is a lot homophobic (not that much today) so the title is sirena In english a mermaid. Since his father disciplinary method is to drown him in a drum of water he just get used to it and since mermaid lives in water so gloc 9 uses the title sirena. In the end his father and his son was left behind since his sister have her own family already and he and his father was left behind and he have to take care of his father because he have a cancer in his father death bed he said sorry for all he have done that he was wrong that sometimes gay is much more masculine than man( since here we see man as strong person) that he was able to go through all of that. That why he cried because he only wish was to be accepted for who he is by his father. And that's why there are people shown in the end because that is a tribute for all famous LGBT member here (not sure bout others coz' I'm not that much into TV hehe) that's all hope this comment helped

    ✌️😅🇵🇭
"Sirena" means "mermaid" in Filipino, and it was and is still used, especially in the past, as a homophobic and/or transphobic slur or derogatory word, name, verbal attack, title and/or insult, among others, for gays in the Philippines, even for other non-heterosexual and non-cisgender males, boys and men, especially males, boys and men who are or who identify as gay, bi, transgender and even including those who are transexuals, transwomen, cross-dressers, transvestites, and other feminine or feminine expressing and feminine presenting males, boys and men, among others.
Now, this word is, kind of, slowly being reclaimed and reused as a word for identity, orientation, expression, presentation, pride, recognition, acknowledgment and/or in other more positive and progressive ways.
Mermaids in folklore and mythology, or "sirena" in Filipino, are half-human or part human (females and/or women) and half-fish or part fish, and this word was used and is still used by some in the Philippines as a homophobic and/or transphobic slur or derogatory word, name, verbal attack, title and/or insult, among others, to mean male persons and individuals or boys and men who were and are considered, who identifies, who were and are externally identified by others and/or who were and are internally, individually and personally identifies as "half, part or not fully" heterosexual and/or cisgender, especially those who are gays, bi's, transgenders and even including those who are transexuals, transwomen, cross-dressers, transvestites, and other feminine or feminine expressing and feminine presenting males, boys and men, among others, relating them to "sirenas/mga sirena" (mermaids) who are half, part or not fully humans (females and/or women) nor fish.
There was and still some other related Filipino words and phrases that were and are also used to refer to and/or to relate to "sirena" (mermaid) such as "malansa" (fishy), "makaliskis" (have, covered with, or full of fish scales), "amoy-dagat" (sea or seawater smell/odor, have the smell/odor of the sea or seawater), "lamang dagat/lamang-dagat" (seafood/sea or marine animal/sea or marine creature), "halamang dagat/halamang-dagat (seaweed/seagrass/sea plant), "amoy-isda" (fish smell/odor, or have the smell of fish) and "amoy malansa/amoy-lansa" (fishy smell/odor, or have a fishy smell), which all was and are still sometimes used to refer and/or to relate to the word "sirena" (mermaid). These other words and phrases were and are still used, especially in the past, as homophobic and/or transphobic slur or derogatory words, phrases, names, verbal attacks, titles or insults, among others, referring to and/or relating to "sirena" (mermaid).
Again, the word "sirena" (mermaid) and its previous meanings and definitions are now, kind of, slowly changing.
One of the possible reasons and causes why "sirena" (mermaid) is now, kind of, slowly loosing its meanings and definitions as a homophobic and/or transphobic slur or derogatory word, phrase, namesm, verbal attack, title and/or insult, among others, is because of this song and rap by Gloc-9 and Ebe Dancel, among many other reasons and causes.

I suggest for you to read a translation of the whole song to appreciate it. The most impactful lyrics is the father's last words:
"'Di sinusukat ang tapang at ang bigote sa mukha, dahil kung minsan, mas lalake pa sa lalake ang bakla"
"It is not measured by bravery nor facial hairs, sometimes, gays are more masculine than the males"
-from a patriarchal POV, acknowledging gays more than the males, made this song appreciated by the LGBT community & their allies ^_^

  • @mvmy6238
    @mvmy6238 2 ปีที่แล้ว

In 2010's, & even earlier, while it could be said that the Philippines is already progressive as to its treatment & acceptance of the LGBT community, the country being patriarchal (as influenced by its colonizers), toxic masculinity still lingers. Some may even argue that the treatment to the community is mere tolerance than acceptance because their safety & rights are still not as well as what they should be.

  • @mvmy6238
    @mvmy6238 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Rap & hiphop in the country are quite dichotomous. There are those boasting toxic masculinity, & those making socio-commentaries. Gloc 9 is one of the country's well known artists for the social relevance of his music.

Sirena" means mermaid & at some point, it was used as a slang for gays.
There is this old "joke" about a father forcing out his kids "gayness" by plunging the kid into a barrel of water for every time she answers that she is a female. After a long time of going in & out of the water, for the last plunge, the kid answers that she already became a sirena.
Depending as to the intent, the term could could be used as a mere punchline to a joke, or a title they bestow upon themselves.

  • @adancingpencil

"Sirena" literally means 'mermaid' in English. Even before this song was released, "sirena" is used as a word to refer to gays.
Gloc-9 just did an interview a few days ago where he explained the origin story of this song. He said his family used to own a sari-sari store and by being the store attendant, he was able to meet a lot of people. He met someone 'gay' who always dresses in skirts and make up even if he was ridiculed by other people. Gloc-9 wanted to tell that person's story so he started writing this song. Someone advised him to write it in a gay person's point of view that is why the line "ako ay isang sirena" (in English: "I am a sirena") was born. When he finished writing the chorus, he immediately thought Ebe Dancel would be perfect of it (even though Ebe isn't gay, his voice sounded impactful; it really did highlighted the message of the song).
"Sirena" is a song that really aimed to show support to LGBTQ+ people specially the gays. Gays here in the Philippines often experience discrimination and abuse. Honestly, I have witnessed children being abused for being "not manly enough". So Gloc-9 really wanted to send his support:
"Kahit ano'ng sabihin nila, ako ay ubod ng ganda" = 'Whatever they say, I am very beautiful'
"Kahit ano'ng gawin nila, bandera ko'y 'di tutumba" = 'Whatever they do, my flag won't go down'
"Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid, Sa patagalan ng paghinga, sa 'kin kayo ay bibilib" = 'Even if I was drowned in a drum full of water, you would be amazed by how well I could hold my breath'
This line on the song really hit me because if you think about it, the gay person is enduring a lot, maybe not literal drowning but a lot issues when he just wanted to live his life.
Gloc-9 started "Sirena" with the main character being strictly raised by a single father. The boy tended to wear his mother's dresses. The father hated how feminine his son was growing up so he used drowning the boy in a drum of water as a punishment.
The stereotype of gays were also showed in the MV (the gay boy being good at girls' games, the gay boy watching another boy play basketball, the gay boy doing whatever he could for that basketball boy but in the end the basketball player chose a girl over him). Those scenes made me sad.
As the song progresses, the gay boy continues to grow more feminine but the father slowly stopped hurting him for being gay. The gay son continued taking care of his father as that abuser grew older.
The scene wherein the main character was crying in front of the father was because of the part of the song that was playing: "Anak, patawad sana sa lahat ng aking nagawa, Di sinusukat ang tapang at ang bigote sa mukha, Dahil kung minsan, mas lalaki pa sa lalaki ang bakla" = 'My child, I'm sorry for all the things I have done, Bravery/courage (basically 'being a man') is not to be measured by having a mustache (basically 'looking like a man'), Sometimes gay people are more manly than men'
The last line is so true! Gays are more manly in a way that they take responsibility to their family. The ending is that when the father was old and sickly, the gay son stayed with him because they are family. He was abused growing up but he was kind-hearted and didn't blame his father. Gloc-9 showed that being gay is not something bad.
Gloc-9 is known for making songs with powerful messages. And this artist isn't afraid to express his freedom. He has different songs about social issues that other people are wary to talk about: a song that supports LGBTQ+, a song about being a drug pusher, a song about local gangs, a song about the difference in the rich and the poor, a song about asking politicians to look at their people, a song about voting the right person etc etc
I just want to thank you for appreciating Gloc-9's music. He really showed queer representation back then and more artists are showing queer representation now. I'd say that he inspired a lot of young artists to express themselves freely.
I hope his company would add subtitles now that his songs are being spread internationally. Let's all spread his messages.
