Today I'm having a look around all of the tomato plants growing on my allotment! Plus I have a 5 week update on my growbag tomato experiment, which has slowed down slightly because I'm growing tomatoes in cold weather at the moment!

Merry Christmas Ali it’s good to hear from you! It’s been a long break but hopefully I’ll be able to do the odd bit in the new year, definitely will be doing an update on the new polytunnel (it’s not fared well to say the least hahah).

My polytunnel is full of green tomatoes due to no sun, i have grown Shirley this year instead of moneymaker and the plants are laden with nice sized fruits. I have a beefsteak called Delicious which has huge fruits, interesting about the megabloom tomato as i have one that looks like that so will remove it.

It’s rubbish isn’t it! I’ll definitely try Shirley next year they sound great. I think catfaced tomatoes are still fine to eat they’re just not as nice looking.

I know Moneymaker are reliable, but is not the most flavoursome variety. Shirley and Alicante are equally reliable, but have a much better flavour. Both are recommended by gardening websites.
Regarding your lack of growth in the expensive grow bag, I had similar problem with some expensive grow bags last year. I thought weed killer contamination, but could also be compost accelerator. I inadvertently used some accelerator instead of blood, fish & bone in one of my raised beds, and the growth was really stunted and many plants failed. When I took the plans up, the roots were rotting off. Won’t make that mistake again.

Cheers Stewart I think I’ve got them on my list from your recommendation, they sound great.
You’re spot on with the growbags they’re alright as a backup but they’re no substitute for the ground!

My tomatoes look good. It's just the leaves on one plant. It could be to do with the weather because they looked ok till all this cold and rain.

Yeah that sounds most likely it’s totally rubbish! I thinks it’s 11 degrees tomorrow night here which isn’t ideal. Not the best summer so far!

Hi mate just watched this video and I'm in exactly the same place !..I tried gro bags and ended up cutting the bottom out and refilling with decent compost ..in future I'll plant direct into the ground .

It’s a bit of a false economy with them really, the amount of feeding is so much higher when it’s just a massive plastic bagged rootball with no access to naturally occurring nutrients in the soil, and the reward is smaller rubbish plants!

Hi. What is causing some of my tomatoes going soft and mouldy. And the leaves are yellow on my pepper plants. Last year I never had this problem.

Those grows bags are a big disappointment Barry. Can’t believe how bad the plants have done considering the others. Those grapes are amazing, I never even thought you could grow grapes in UK!

They are starting to come back a bit now, if temperatures pick up I think they could have a spell of growth to catch up! A bird pecked most of my grapes yesterday I can’t believe it! Still got a bag full though and a load on the vine at least!

Hi. What causes your tomato plant leaves to turn yellow and curl. Im feeding them once a week with tomato feed. Do I need to feed them more. I'm growing red pear tomato. Plum tomato. Tumbling Tom yellow. Rasberry ruffles tomato. Costoluto di parma tomato and a crystal apple cucumber which grows like an apple.

Usually if they’re being fed enough the next thing to cause yellowing is the temperature. It’s just an indication of the plant being stressed, mine have had a bit of yellowing which I think is because it’s been so cold. Heat and underwatering usually cause leaves to curl, which is hard to avoid if they’re in a greenhouse or similar. I’ve got plenty of that too but the plants and tomatoes are generally fine!

Did any of the grow bags produce fruit?

Hello unfortunately the polytunnel was obliterated by the wind so everything was wrecked!

Will you write to complain about the growbag?

I’m in the process of going through their customer service department but I don’t think they’ll be able to comment on it, we’ll see!
