History here in the USA was they used the canvas from thecovered wagons the journeied in , this canvas use wasn't just to keep rain, but creatures like snakes and nest building birds out that came with a earthen roof. Your wood shingles idea is a much better choice given you had that ability which they didn't in some areas for years with no real trees. Wood had to be shipped in. Note you are doing great love the unique and charming stuff you are making
