I am a Mumbai-based sitarist. We, students of music, learn not just from our direct gurus, but also by listening to great artistes. In that way, I can say Ustad Rashid Khan has been my guru too for years. Vocal is the basis of all music, even instrumental. And Rashid Khan's music, which deeply resonated with me because of its pure meditative quality, has been an enduring inspiration . When the first monsoon clouds would gather n the sky, I invariably tuned in to Rashid Khan's moving recital of Raga Megh. When I started to play Raga Kaushi kanada on sitar, I listened to his magnificent rendition of the Raga, for days to imbibe some its beauty. And so on with other ragas. Like me, he has been a Guru to countless students and a mesmerizing performer for scores of people around the globe.
Had been chanting fervently for his miraculous recovery, but the universe had other plans. His untimely demise at just age 56, feels like the loss of a near one, though I never knew him personally and heard him live on stage only once.
Artistes like him live on forever through the music they leave behind, and which thankfully due to technology, is today easily available to one and all...my deepest pranaam to the maestro. And to Rohit Kataria for his great commitment to promote Indian classical music through popular music and this video teaching us how to sing Rashid Khan's famous song. Namaste. Warmly Munmun Ghosh
